Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

I gotta rewatch. Our own Eric Voss here had my butt clenched the whole time for a horrible cameo or some dumb twist.

Love they played it entirely self contained… no “hello kids, I’m wedge Antilles! Here’s a message from my good friend Luke skywalker!”

*plays hologram of Luke and Baby Yoda*

“Please join me and my baby yoda at my new Jedi academy!”

it was fun… pirates have bad aim.

Still not clear on whether or not the adults knew about anything going on outside their planet, but seems not since they werent surprised to see a Jedi.

Wonder why we still never got to see Rennod's face....

So did the New Republic just swoop in and go "cool, this is our money now!"

Also, it appears that small city is the only one on the entire planet? Would make sense to have a few doing the work instead of one, but weird to have an otherwise completely forested planet, unless its because most of the core is burrowed out for the vaults.

Yes, Eric Voss at NR thinks the money has been used for nefarious purposes for a long time, but the evidence rather suggests that no one has visited At Attin for many years. We also know that the kids had no idea there was a Galactic Civil War. So it stands to reason no one would be surprised to see a Jedi, if they were still in an Old Republic mindset.

So that you can get a well-known actor Season 2.

Yes and no. Yes, they have money to fund the establishment of the government, but doing so devalues the credit itself and triggers inflation. They'll have to be careful re-introducing the money back into the galaxy, as any government would.

Yes, and I believe it is a very, very small planet.

Did anyone else feel like it was implied with the corellian corvette at the end that the new Republic team that arrived probably included Leia? They could have used any ship for that scene but they picked that one on purpose.

Yep, I thought so! I don't know if Mon Mothma is still Chancellor at this time, but if she is, you can bet Leia is on that ship. I really appreciated the opportunity to use my imagination about what happens next!

It happened to me as well... i wish it was but on the other hand I'm so glad we didn't have major cameos just to get an extra point. I like that this series stands on it's own.

I wasn’t surprised by a single thing that happened, and had expected this as the BASE of the episode, but not the twist (which never arrived), the denouement, the closure to characters, etc.

It was a good episode but not the best by far.

Also kind of weird, but I suddenly started rooting for Jod in this episode. He should never killed the kids and their parents…I felt like the kids were finally annoying in this episode.

Okay, Easter eggs. I mean aside from all the nods to 80’s films, the props, the various other-Star-Wars refs…there’s more.
Actually there’s two further sets. The second is super esoteric and nerdy and fairly speculative though, I’ll post on that later. I held off posting this first part just in case it might’ve tipped off the ending (I actually would have loved if they followed it through to its logical conclusion!)…

After the opening segment (a heavy-handed homage to A New Hope…not accidental, but misdirection to get you in Star Wars mode), the entire middle of Skeleton Crew is The Wizard of Oz.

Not precisely note-for-note…but the core structure (boring life, whisked elsewhere, but finding there’s no place like home), character archetypes, plot elements, certain visual refs just for fun…it’s completely that story, through a sci-fi filter. I mean, consider:

Skeleton-Crew-Wizard-of-Oz.jpg

(See, this is why I was upset about Brutus. It was his destiny to poke that eye out, but the story took a hard turn at that precise moment.)

Your mission, then, is to watch again and try to spot all the hints, references and parallels. Just a few off the top of my head:
  • Take a drink every time someone says “Wizard!”
  • The Barrier / Emerald City (green)
  • Jewels of the Old Republic / Emerald City (Oz books also included a Ruby City)
  • Map: At Attin in center (again, Oz books, maps place Emerald City at center)
  • Coordinate card from Kh'ymm’s computer / first brick on the road (yellow)
  • Kids disguised to enter Skull Ridge Spa / characters disguised to enter the witches castle
  • The parents’ message / Aunt Em in the crystal ball
  • KB’s strained speech and subsequent repair / the oil can
And on. And on. And on. This isn’t just creepy fan theory, it’s absolutely intentional.
My absolute favorite that I’ve noticed so far though: where was Kh’ymm’s observatory located?
They worked in a whole plot point of this. THE JOKE HAS LAYERS!

Invasion and fear therof is really hitting too close to home right now. Just felt it was too easily wrapped up.

But Neel in that cannon. Awesome moment.

The "Noooooo" moment was cheesy PT cringe. They didn't feel sad enough.

I don't think anyone over 10 years old was surprised by much (with potentially the exception of Jod). After all it's a kids show.
Many expected Jod to be more of a Long John Silver type, to help the kids or have a change of heart at the end. He obviously didn't. If he had then everyone would've said that was predictable

Great finale, I want MOOOORE!!!!

The supervisor reminded me of HAL9000 and the main computer of the Axiom from "Wall-E". The battle in the streets was very reminiscent of the battle in the streets of "Masters of the Universe" from 1987.

They could easily have a time jump and start a new season with the kids going to university or graduating, with Wim clearly attending flight school. But as streaming times indicate, there might be no season 2 which is a shame. This show is the best after "Mando" and "Andor". I really hope some Disney / LFL representatives are reading this thread to see that they have created something beautiful.
