Star Wars: questions you've always wanted answers for

Yeah, the "science" in all the movies typically doesn't have a leg to stand on. The Starkiller is simply the latest...

Like I said, If "plot holes" as such bother one too much, then one should probably avoid Star Wars (and Star Trek) movies.

Yeah, it's not a plot hole. And it doesn't bother me either way. I liked the movie.

I feel like because of the way it was presented in the movie it's supposed to be a converted planet.

some times we have to over look things.. Starkiller base was the only thing that really didn't do it for me in ep7. I wish hey just had huge star destroyers with super weapons on them. why can't Star Wars do that? massive ship with a planet destroying laser gun?

EU kind of did that already, only with a smaller ship that blew up carida training base IIRC.

that's another big problem, many have said it was a planet with the super weapon built from the inside out... I wish I could find the YouTube video of the physicist's tearing star killer base apart... they were talking about how the weapon is where the core of the planet is and how you would never be able to get anywhere near the core because of the force of gravity inside

it was actually a really cool video explaining how it wouldn't work, they weren't bashing the movie. just star killer base

Why would the inside of a planet have more gravity than the outside?

Not necessarily gravity but pressure, the core of a planet, which is what we're taking about here, is going to have a lot of pressure to it, sort of going underwater, the deeper you go the more pressure you get.

I'll try and find the video tonight it was interesting

Let's see... They've demonstrated as far back as the original film that they not only have artificial gravity and antigravity, but can manipulate and project it with extreme precision. And if interdictors can generate a gravity well easily as powerful as a planet or large moon, it stands to reason their technology has the capacity to generate comparably powerful negating forces. Never forget this is a macro-society tens of thousands of years ahead of us, with advanced energy storage density, power-generation, plasma-manipulation, ion propulsion, and fast FTL technology as routine and commonly available, even in the sticks. So if you try to apply contemporary technology or scientific understanding to it, you've probably automatically failed.

When did Obi Wan build his lightsaber?

So I've been trying to figure out the continuity of Obi Wan and his lightsabers.
At the end of Ep1 he apparently looses his saber. But In Ep2 has the "same" saber. Albeit chrome finished....
He looses it in ep2 we assume?
Then in the clone wars cartoon he has the one that he eventually has in Ep3 and (4?). Unless its supposed to be different.

In episode 2 we SEE Anakin's saber get destroyed. Then he has his "Graflex" like one in Clone Wars.
Based on this and his eventual Vader saber(s) we can assume that Anakin prefers a certain look to a saber.

But what about Obi?

Re: When did Obi Wan build his lightsaber?

Obviously at some point in time, Ben was stuck in a junkyard that happened to have a Rolls Royce jet engine dismantled, along with a lawnmower, kitchen sink and a British grenade. Seems like it was built on a dare. Perhaps Ahsoka said something like, I bet you couldn't build a lightsaber out of that British junk that fell out of the wormhole. The rest, as they say, is history.

Don't you mean a motorcycle grip? :lol

(I did once describe a real balance pipe as a vintage sink drain on a customs form. The fellow who received it got a kick out of that. :lol)

Re: When did Obi Wan build his lightsaber?

Knowing Kenobi he may have even had a few of those built as a spare, if you use a weapon that's labor intensive to make it would make sense to have at least one backup available for emergencies. I don't care how advanced your tech is Murphy's Law of the battlefield will still be in effect.

Re: When did Obi Wan build his lightsaber?

My interpretation is that Count Dooku had Kenobi's lightsaber destroyed after Kenobi's capture in AOTC.
It would have been right after the battle of Geonosis that Kenobi built the new one.

My own interpretation is that he found it likely that he would face Count Dooku again, and that he therefore designed it to be more suitable for duelling than what was customary at the time. He therefore looked at thousand-year old blueprints for inspiration and decided to build it with a wider parry plate made of a rare Cortosis alloy (real world counterpart: Inconel ;) ) that would be able to withstand a hit from a lightsaber blade. The use of Cortosis did however also require that the emitter hole be wider than the norm so as to not interfere with the operation of the lightsaber.

The designation of "AOTC lightsaber" vs "TPM lightsaber" is largely due to Master Replicas'. They had used a resin-cast from AOTC as reference.
The stunt lightsaber props in that had been cast in resin were just finished differently in AOTC than in TPM: chromed or vacu-metallized instead of painted with "silver" paint. (There was also "chromed" rubber at one point, I don't remember if that was for AOTC or ROTS).
MR's "AOTC" lightsaber prop did not have holes in the pommel cubes only because they had been filled in in the resin casts.

Agreed, in-universe it's reasonable to consider it the same saber TPM-AOTC. It's just in our replica world we make such distinctions (like Luke ANH/ESB, Han's ANH vs. Greedo Killer, etc....)

Yeah, Obi-Wan's AOTC lightsaber is likely just his TPM lightsaber polished up. It wasn't a bottomless pit. They were able to get down there and confirm that what he and Qui-Gon had fought was a Sith Lord, and it was shallow enough that Maul was able to survive the impact, even with being cut in half.

I'd be fine chalking his new (ROTS/ANH) lightsaber up to just personal growth and changed tastes over a decade. When deprived of the saber he'd been carrying from newly-minted Knight to experienced teacher... *shrug* He probably found himself minus his old saber, and when he thought about a new one, the old design just didn't appeal any more, and he went with something practical and pragmatic.
