I had the same reaction until I saw the finished effect, which is pretty damned cool IMO. If nothing else it gives the thing an extra measure of personality.

I guess I'll adopt a wait and see attitude then. Anyone have any idea as to why the phasers only have stun and kill? The originals were capable of multiple settings. Hell, in The omega glory they killed thousands of people with one phaser. Could this be an Enterprise reference perhaps?

My guess is these will be audio/video communicators that show who you're talking to on the round screen, like a mini teleconference.

THese are all Playmates toys.

Not to imply that Barbie has the inside track, but this version:

...has what appears to be a vid screen on the flip top.

It could also represent green screen material that was on the original prop that was supplied to the sculptors as reference for the piece.

The Playmates toy has the UFP symbol there, so it's odd that the two are completely different.

IIRC, there's supposed to be a lenticular pic on the toy, so that may be beneath the dome.

well, if you cant see it from your own example I dont know what else to say. The new phaser design bears no more or no less resemblance to the classic design then the nebulizer, The only thing the three have in common is the rough outline. Neither teh Neb or the new phaser have a P1 and teh share no common surface features. Again, all tehy have in common is a (very) rough outline.
I pretty much guarantee you that if you just showed an outline of the 3 weapons to a neophyte and said 'what show is this from' they would all guess Star Trek.
As for teh new toy pics. The new 'E' looks better in the new toy shot.
