Limited Run Star Lord leather Boot Spats by Danny

Re: Star Lord leather Boot Spats

Has anyone figured out the preferred method for securing the spats to the top of your foot?

Re: Star Lord leather Boot Spats

My method that I love (but has hurt my hand every time!) is hand-sewing it down. You can do it with a leather awl, I think it's called? I'm not talented with one, never used it, so I just hand-sewed it using heavy-duty needles (a pack of them, cuz they'll break), reinforced black thread, a set of needle-nose pliers when I need to drive them through shoe and leather both, and a lot of patience.

Takes a while per boot, but it looks great. Obviously you need someone else to mark the shoe heavily with chalk to outline where the spats should lay while you wear it. I carefully sew through the existing stitches.

I'll take a picture later, if I remember. But it looks great.

Danny, can you send me extra leather for the back of my spats when you go to ship? Going to make the boot version and it would really come in handy [emoji106]

I recommend getting different leather. The backs are very dark leather inset, aren't they? I picked up some nearly-black brown leather to serve the inside for when I build it into a boot.

We just got some scrap leather from a local fabric store.

An easier way, that I used, was I riveted in boot strap from the first tab (counting from the back) that ran an elastic strap down under the arch of my boot. Worked great and took all of 5 minutes to do.

I plan to drill out the rivets on the front spats and use Chicago type screws to mount them permanently to my shoes.

Re: Star Lord leather Boot Spats

Well, I was originally trying to just wear them with my normal boots, attaching the foot piece so that it's not permanent or doesn't mar the boot. However, since that is proving difficult I might just have to use an old pair of shoes.

I used a strap/magnet combo that works great and isn't visible on the shoe. I talk about it earlier in the thread, but if you want more info or pics, let me know.

Re: Star Lord leather Boot Spats

Sure thing. First, I apologize for how dirty my shoes are, lol.

Initially I used velcro spots to attach the spat to the outside of the shoe. It worked great until i wore it, and the glue quickly gave way from the leather. I still need to clean the glue spots from the outside of the show, but they don't show with the spats.

I attached two 3/4" x 1/8" rare earth disc magnets inside the shoe under where the spat flaps in the front three spots touch the shoe.

Then I attached magnets in matching spots in the spat. Across the back two flaps, I use an elastic strap with a velcro fastener on one side. This allows me to get the foot piece on and off easy without stretching the elastic around my shoe. The strap sits across the bottom of the shoe in the arch so it doesn't hit the ground.

The combo keeps the spat in place on my foot, but the toes being magnetic allows it to move around and flex if I need to kick my foot out or twist it - it doesn't stress the spat, and it always goes back into place once the magnets get near each other. It's worked out *very* well for me so far.

I'd be interested in seeing pictures. Thanks!

Re: Star Lord leather Boot Spats

That's basically what I did but without the magnets. I just left the front to hang on its own.

Re: Star Lord leather Boot Spats

I glued mine with velcro, I feel the leather on top of the shoes keeps its shape pretty well and I just need it toseep it in place for when I turn my shoe.

Re: Star Lord leather Boot Spats

I was wondering if it would be possible to add a piece of black leather on the back as a flap you could tuck around when you buckle your self in to hide the unsightly pants from showing?
quill-back-shoes.jpg He has a pair of knee high black boots on and the spats attach to them. If you don't have knee high black boots then your pants show.

back.JPG A piece of black theather added to one of the side ends that covers the exposed pants when you put them on would be awesome.

Sewed down to the shoes. This was one of the most tedious handsewing jobs I've ever, ever, ever done or want to. My hand cramps just looking at it. Sewing back from inside of a shoe-- I wish I had daintier hands to fit in there!

Took a few passes on one; I kept having misalignment issues. But it looks pretty good now, holds nicely. Pretty good permanent solution.

Planning to add a backpiece to the boots and velcro that in, removing the straps, so he can easily slide his foot in and out of the shoe and increase its accuracy.
