Finally, an update once more:
Started sculpting the chest plate armour as practice, since it's the flattest sculpt in the package and allows me to sculpt both curves and straight edges.
Started out with the base itself, cut from a cardboard box to give me an outline.
Added volume for general shape in this stage. (about half an hour in)
Then I started adding layers of clay to recreate the feel of panels. (about one and half hours in)
To give it a little more depth, I added a rim on each panel itself, smoothed out the spikes on the edge to blend in better. (about 3 and half hours in)
Started sculpting the "bone" collar/edge (about 4 hours in)

I have to hook up my scanner, but I'll post a scan of the first layout sketch later this evening.
