Sherlock Coat opinions/info?

My coat has arrived! I love it. It feels a good weight, lining is soft and wonderful, the collar stands nicely, the pockets are brilliant, the fabric looks great and the skirt/pleats are just downright great.

It's hard to see it properly hanging up and these photos really don't do it justice. When I manage to get better pictures (hopefully of me wearing it rather than on a hanger) I shall post those too.

I'm pretty pleased with how it has come out. A couple of minor things here and there but I'm so happy with it.

Tell me what you think... it's been a long time coming since finding the fabric!

A very beautiful coat indeed - you could easily mistake it for the original!

I have owned a few long overcoats (military style), but ever since I got into Sherlock (which was, I'd say, about 2 months ago - I know, shame on me!), I had quite fancied a coat like his. Where did you get this made?

Yeah it does look pretty good. It hangs quite nicely.

Yeah that was my fault... I noticed that the belt was rather slack and I tried to "tighten it" by moving the buttons slightly but now they're off center so I have to move them back to their original position.

I actually thought it'd be more of a working belt to be able to "pull in the sides" to tighten the coat more... if you have any tips that will help me let me know! Thanks.

Once the button holes are in there's no changing it. Best bet would be to open the sides of the coat at the belt, slide it in further, and sew it all back together.

Thanks for the advice... I just re-positioned the buttons on the belt back to how they were and I just wore it out and about for a test drive and it was perfectly fine.

I do need to learn how to properly sew coat buttons on coz they are all pretty loose. I did however manage to do a little bit of painting on the buttons.

I didn't bother taking my time with them coz I just wanted them to be kinda slap dash rather than perfect. I'm also no great painter so getting the "thread" parts of the buttons would have been a nightmare.

If I have more time to do them I'll do them better but I actually kinda like them the way they are now... here's a quick pic of them.

Wow, that looks great! I particularly like how you painted the buttons, actually.

Thanks! I quite like how they came out too... afterwards I went outside and the light shone off them in just the right way that makes them look real dark brown instead of black. The yellow paint has kinda rubbed through the speckled marks which gives them a unique look I think. Just need to learn how to properly sew on buttons.

I'm quite happy with it all in general to be honest. It fits well... a little large on the shoulders but it kinda looks like the way it hangs off Benedict as I know his is ever so slightly too big for him.

My coat arrived today.
This came from one if the Ebay Sellers from China.
It turned out better than I expected, nice fabric.

Unfortubately, it was made too long - I will take it to a local tailor to have 5 or 6 inches taken off.

Hey.. that is indeed the same tailor and fabric they used for mine! I'm so glad they took all my measurements and accurate details and improved the ones they now sell! It looks great on you... need to get a proper pic done of mine over the weekend too. Mine was slightly too long too and I was thinking of getting it taken up but I'm actually growing to like it slightly longer... where does his coat officially stop on him length wise?

Really good picture here to show the real length. Kinda mid - high shin level I guess.

Hard to tell exactly, I'm guessing, based on images, about a few inches past the knee, definitely less than mid-calf.
The belt on mine could use being lowered a bit too.
Other than that, for the price, I got a wonderful wool coat, that fits and looks great.

The seller has a number of Ebay accounts, all come from the same factory.
Just look for the coat on Ebay and rest assured it will come from the same people.

I think the proper length is 4" below the knee. I'll be making two changes to my own coat to make it more everyday wearable. I'll be slimming the sleeves and cutting the length off two or three inches.

That looks great. I'm ordering one as soon as my tax return comes in. Thanks for posting the pictures Aposstle.

To folks who have gone the ebay route, are these coats roomy? I would want to be able to wear a suit under mine.

I would imagine that would depend on what measurements you gave to them - if you intend to wear a suit jacket underneath the coat, you would need to give the measurements a few inches larger than you would normally. For example, if you fit a size 42 suit nicely, you would require the coat to be at least 44 inches in chest. And so on, and so forth...

I asked them directly about that when ordering mine because they ask what you will be normally wearing. I told them I would like to wear a suit occasionally and they said the tailor takes that into consideration when making the order.

So just supply them with your measurements whilst wearing a pair of trousers and a shirt and tell them that you'd like to wear a suit under the coat and they'll sort it out. Mine came out really nice measurement wise... I wear it mostly with just button shirts and very occasionally i wear my jacket and either way it looks and feels perfectly comfy. As soon as I get a chance this week I'll take some pics.
