Sherlock Coat opinions/info?

I specified the length on mine - measured four inches below the knee, as suggested here. Might be setting myself up for disappointment not having seen it in the person yet, but that coat is fantastic for one of the "cosplay" sites.

I keep thinking "it's cheap" too, but then back to earth, that's about what you'd spend for a good winter coat at somewhere like Express or Zara. Anyway, this is leaps and bounds above what Baron is offering.

Isn't a coat at Zara more like $300?

Yeah, I guess I shop there during the sale.:lol

BTW, I should hand in my man card for asking this, if I ever had one, but what's a good place to buy buttons? Joannes has a small selection but nothing to write home about. Risu's sherlock buttons are knockout (and anyone with a sherlock coat should look at these) but I'm looking to spend a little less ATM.

Buttons can be hard to find online. There are a couple stores in LA that have a good selection, but I have yet to find a web site with a good organizational system.

Yeah, it's a bit too long, but I'd rather have it too long than too short. I may have it adjusted at some point, but I kind of like it a bit long. I feel like it's only a couple inches off anyway.

Side note, on of my buttons is completely wrong and doesn't match the others.

You know I think one of the issues with the whole coat length thing is that Benedict Cumberbatch looks REALLY tall, so anything on his body ends up looking like it goes on for miles. The dude is only 6 feet, which in America isn't that big of a deal but in Europe is sometimes rather giant.

...also he takes the precaution of a short friend in addition to his good coat ;)

It surprised me when I started patterning jackets the huge difference that 2" in length can make. I'd say they made it 6" too long. Because there's no vent though, a good seamstress would fix it for you for cheap.

While in The Netherlands he is on the short side. But the we're the exception. We're the tallest people in the world apparantly. Even I tower above people in Spain.

Although the average in America is not comparable since the size of it. It differs per state isn't it?

I'm 5" 10", and when I moved to America, felt extremely short. In the last couple of years, I started really working out, and now people have started saying I'm tall. :confused

Anyway, when I was measuring the length, and hit the right spot, it did feel *ker-ching*, that's the iconic coat, thought of this image:

I'm 5'10" and I told them I was 5'9". If you guys think that 4" below the knee is the proper length, then my coat only needs to be shortened 2.5". It's not as bad as it seems I guess, certainly not 6".

Well, your coat looks great as it is, so I wouldn't sweat it. If you do want a screen accurate coat, from the picture, looks like you may need more than 2.5 inches off. Guess it's dependent on the length of your legs.

Looks like I was wrong. Measuring 4" below the knee the coat is 8" too long. I'm not certain the 4" below the knee is the right length, but I just dropped my coat off at my tailor's to get it shortened by 7".

I'm actually torn between making mine accurate length or having it land right at the knees. I'm already going to be taking some liberties with the sleeve bagginess to make it more my style, and I'm not big on long black trench coats.

Yeah, when I do end up ordering this, I'm going to have it a little less baggy in the sleeves, more fitted at the waist (for a good silhouette) and just below the knee. It took a lot of trial and error, but I've come to realize that what looks really good on someone else doesn't always compliment my petite frame.

When I order, do I need to tell them a full length of the coat, or just a stopping place from the knee?

Full length is always best, then they can cut it exactly without knowing how tall you are or your body-leg ratio.

As far as the fit goes, it is actually pretty slim. Double breasted coats just always look really big when they're open.

So anybody know of any low minimum fabric weaving houses? I'm bad at the google. I figure I'l lat least look around and get a quote to have this stuff woven properly. Maybe if enough of us wanted in on it we could make it happen.

EDIT: Already heard back from the first place. It's looking totally feasible, although expensive. Not like "holy s*** no" expensive. More like "OK, time to start saving up" expensive. Still open to any other weavers anybody can find, particularly those in Asia/India because it'll be cheaper than the British place I found.

OK, after a little more back and forth, that place might not be a viable option. Their products are amazing, but the price for this type of fabric is between 30-40 pounds per meter and there's a 100 meter minimum.
