Sherlock Coat opinions/info?

1. That last photoset was horrifying. I mean it looked awesome, but that's absolutely terrible. hahahaha REICHENBACH FEELS ARE STILL GOING ON OVER HERE
[not that I don't jump off anything tall I can climb up to tease my friends when I'm wearing my coat, but...]

2. The pics from the girl with the powder blue scarf look like the linen version of cosplay sky. So I wouldn't worry? :)

I wouldn't recommend that fabric, it's going to be completely different from the real stuff. Also polyester, eww.

Oh, the picture linked to your post isn't the stuff in your link. It looks like it could work. I'd still try to avoid polyester if possible, but it could have the look.

For my money the fabric Neroon15 posted (post 126 & 128), and said to be a good match by Ray, is still what I'm leaning toward going with. Even after seeing all these options. It almost looks a little flat texture wise, but I think the pattern is quite good.

Just fyi, I ordered 3 swatches from across the web and dropped in to my favorite fabric store today with reference photos. They had a tweed that was more grey than black (but a good match) and are going to order in some wool swatches for me by Monday. If they come empty on this I'll be surprised; they are the ones that sourced the purple spandex for my 66 Batgirl.

Just thought i'd write up the measurements given by RayR, if RayR wants me to take these pictures down, i'll happily do so. Although i don't see any problem in sharing them. In case you didn't guess it, all measurements are in inches.

EDIT: Blimey, this takes up more space than i thought, should i just link them instead?

I think this might save him time, as I was inevitably going to ask him for a copy down the line and I'm sure others would as well.

The Cosplaysky wool arrived. Not sure how satisfied I am with it yet. The colour isn't too bad but the grid pattern is tighter than ideal. at 3.5kg for 8 metres, it weighs in at 437 grams.

Thoughts?

The pattern does seem a bit small and the black/gray ration seems a little off as well. There are worse matches out there... but all I can think of is this ancient gray recliner I have in the basement. Personally, I don't think I can get over that similarity haha.

By the way, what is everyone using to make the base of their coat. I've been looking at patterns which will allow extra additives such as the welt pockets and pleats in the back. I hope to get some ideas from what everyone else is using. I've been hoping I could get away with using a vogue 1266 pattern but now I'm not too sure. I dont know how flattering the welt pockets would be in trying to add them. I've also been looking at a laughing moon mercantile Sherlock coat pattern. Overall, I think it's a tough call. Anyone else got any suggestions? Since I'm female, this is much harder because I'm going to have to make a man designed coat flattering for a female figure.

The Vogue 1266 would work fine for a woman's version. If you wanted to remove the front princess seams that might be tricky, but you could leave them in for a female version. You can add welt pockets and a back belt to any pattern, that's not a problem. It's adding dart, pleats, etc. that starts to complicate matters.

Since neroon was asking...
I have started drawing up the pattern I announced I would be doing quite some time ago (but hey, I did warn you that I wouldn't start before the summer holidays...), and it's available as a step by step instruction on my LJ since Sunday (construction of the back, so far).
I would LOVE it if someone actually worked along!

Oh, and by the way. I went to that large wholesale fabrics store yesterday. And I have ACTUALLY found an even better match than my alfatex (bottom of the pic: alfa, top: the new one). While the "pattern" is still too fine (app. four dotty things instead of the original two...), I know, its structure is coarser, the colours more subdued, and it is a tad heavier as well. What do you think?

That fabric looks awesome. I find I'm quite partial to the one I bought on fabric mart though. Where are you posting? I'd love to follow along but as you can tell from the next thing I'm about to ask I'm still trying to gather all the pieces I need in constructing this cost as accurately as I can.

By the way, I've heard numerous comments on other sites debating about the collar. A lot of people are claiming it has a collar stiffener in it which gets it to pop like many of those prfessional tailored shirts. Then there's the debate on whether it's two seperate pieces or one long oval piece. When I sew this I want to know I'm being exact. So if anyone can provide confirmation and also help out on the collar construction that would be great!!!!

Of course it has interfacing in it, it's a coat that costs more than $40. You can use collar canvas or a heavy weight himo.

The collar is compromised of four pieces total. Two for the upper collar, or the part that shows normally, and two for the under collar, or the part that shows when the collar is popped. Those pairs are almost identical pieces, the main collar and the collar stand. The collar stand is a small strip that rests against the neck on the upper collar. It curves down into the body a few inches before the front. It's essentially the same as this collar I made a few months ago.

Thanks risu!!! Thanks for that info!!! I'm a sewer but I'm still a bit naive about some of these processes. I've only ever done one piece collars. I've never seen a four piece!!! Is there anywhere on the web you or someone can show the process in constructing the Sherlock collar. I've never been good at constructing them. I hope to hear from you. Thanks again!!!!
