SDCC08 - Dr WHO Replicas!

yeah, while I might gripe about the pricetag, if I knew it would still be available down the line and not just this once, I wouldn't mind... you know, save up a bit of cash and BANG buy it one day.
But all at once when I don't have the scratch or the time to gather it isn't cool.
Especially when they've been talking about one hundred bones for so long.

I think that the initial scramble is done and the remaining Sonics will take a while to sell out. I think they will eventually sell out but not today or this week. My bet is there will still be some left up until they start to ship.

According to Doctor Who Magazine, straight from the BBC, the next series is season 1 due to the entirely new production team.

I am hoping it is not a train wreck :confused. Have we seen any photos of the control room or prop changes? I think I remember having this conversation before Tennet took over and that turned out good but you still had the rest of the production team. Do they still have the same writers?

Hmm, that seems kind of necessary. Even though it's a new team, I don't see why they need to go and call it season 1 again. I can see the discussions in the future...

"I love season 1 of the new Doctor Who!"

"Yeah, Eccleston was great!"

"No, Season 1 with the 11th Doctor"

But whatever. As long as it's FANTASTIC, the season number really won't matter much (and I supposed it'll get people [like me] into the habit of identifying the Doctor's number). But I hope they don't change the screwdriver too drastically.

That would be ridiculous to start the season numbers over again! Is the BBC run by Marvel comics now?

Well they have NEVER been seasons anyway...always 'series'. :p

The exterior was said to be UPGRADED not redone (lots of fan musings though) and the interior has a history of change, so thats fine by me....Season 1 again...probably just a misunderstanding, highly doubt that to be the case....but it is the case...dumb idea

#259 according to my email, and thanks to my sister who I called from the hospital and walked her through ordering for me. $430.00, looks like no sushi or Starbucks for the next couple months! :lol

But where do you log in to see status on the MFX website?

There's a Login/My Account button hear the bottom of the screen. That's where I checked to see if my order was placed.

And it's good to hear you managed to snag one. I hope everything's ok with your dad.

Dude...No sushi or Starbucks? talk about roughing it. :p, I gotta get my Ikura with Quail egg!!!!

"You've redecorated? I don't like it!!"

The outside of the TARDIS will have some minor tweeks, but will still be the same police box we all know and love. Interior I haven't read what we're getting there.

"You've changed the desktop settings to coral?"

(Or whatever the line was--I can't remember. I was too busy weeping like a baby during the entire scene.)

does yours say order status: pending?

mine does

The email I recived said
Order Status: Pending

but if I go to the site and log into my account it shows it as

Order Status: Confirmed

They are going back to the white surrounds? That would be alright. I think they should locate the back up control room and use that for a while (or did that get jetisond in Castrovalva? I can't remeber) :lol

I know they'll never use it in full (because life isn't that kind) but I'd love to see some sort of nod to the McGann control room, maybe passing an open archway to it in a hall or something.

That would be cool. That control room seems to be sort of the missing link between the old style control rooms and the current one (That is where the whole time roter going to the cieling/ pillars surrounding the console thing started I think). I really like the idea of the "study?" area with the books shelfs and the reading chair. That really seems to fit the Doctor charcater.

I log on to MFX website and it says order pending, the email I got said confirmned. As long as I get a sonic I'm happy.

Is the price more than I had hoped for? Yes.

Is it worth it? Yes! That is of course, my opinion.

I can get a lightsaber a tricorder a phaser, etc. from MR, but MR did not make the original! Thay are all replicas, from a replica team. Now I know MFX did not make the original sonic, but they DO make all of the insanely cool aliens and etc. that I watch each week. To have a sonic in my hands, made by THEM is worth the extra money to me! Having it made in China by someone who says "What is this? Make 10,000!" is not as special to me.

I'll not be going to the UK anytime in the future. I'll never be invited to Neill's shop, but he's sending a little bit of his shop to me!

I am so very thankful that they are making these! Now $430.00 for a flashlight? Sounds insane. That is why my wife will NEVER know how much I spent on it! :lol (Seperate credit card connected to my play money and not family funds) But as I reflect on all the things I do toss my money on. Lieterally I would spend about $75.00 a month on sushi (Going twice a month) $50.00 on Starbucks a month (Mon-Fri on the way to work.) And about $60.00 a month on lunch at work. When I do the math that's just under three months of 'savings' and I'll have a sonic in my hands!
All that I get for the above mentiond items is, well, a trip to the 'loo' 12 hours later! :lol

Also, how much does a good quality Tom Baker replica sonic go for? Russ makes the best one around (Again, only my opinion, no offense to others who make them) but before the group run (Which I'm in on) they would go for $250.00 each. And it had no sound either!

A few months back I thought that the MFX sonic was falling through and tried to source one. The machine shop I brought it to (Who would do it, as many just plain said no) wanted about $300.00 just to turn the metal and give me all the pieces in kit form. I would still need to source the plastic, custom cut the the lense and neck to make sure that they were all level and perfect cuts, get the LED's, make a battery holder, get batteries, do the electronics in the head, run the wires down the neck, figure out how to NOT bind the wires up as the neck extends and retracts, paint, assemble and ship, so it would have run up to $350.00 completed. This is not too far off, and again, made by the real guys. Not to mention a prototype would be $1,500.00 just to show what we would have.

Okay, why am I rambling on about this? Well, I'm now thinking back to when I was 12 years old living in Minneapolis MN. I would run home from school every day to be in front of the TV by 4:00 pm tuned into PBS to watch Tom Baker fighting any sort of monsters. Then at 4:30 promptly, I would put on my jacket, throw my scarf around my neck and go out to some distant snow covered planet with an invisible Sara Jane and Harry in tow and a sonic screwdriver (Or horribly carved wooden dowel) in hand and battle them myself all afternoon!

What It really comes down to is capturing "The Magic" that is Doctor Who.

Neill, if you are reading this, you have delivered that magic! And I am eternally grateful.

Thank You!

Now, on to designing a custom stand for this....

I didn't get one because I ain't gots no money so please please please take exhaustive high res pics when you guys start recieving these in Sept!!!
