Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)

just noticed one of your earlier posts on the page.

When the time comes, id be more than happy to teach you the basics of creating a walk-through so you can do it yourself. And as my project shows, i can easily give you the run down if you later want to turn it into an interactive environment. (how are you with code?)

Anything to help out a fellow star wars fan.. thats the whole reason i chose my assignment. (also coz its the closest i'll ever get to owning my own falcon :D )

I think these might be for the full scale ESB Falcon set as it shows the position of the landing/flood lights.

Thats why my graphics are squished a little. Because I have the ESB internal design placed in the ANH shorter cockpit.

I did know this, but the extended ESB cockpit will not work with any of the models. The ANH full sized set plans were based on the proportions of 5' model being made.

I had never seen the actual plans for the EBS set untill three days ago either. The falcon plan is interesting as well. It seems to be the 5' showing were the new landing boxes are to be added.

Ohh and look!!!! the mandables toe in LOL

I didnt go back over all posts to see If I missed someone else offering this. I found them on a link I had, that I dont remember saving. Or maybe it was my son. Anyway. Joe Johnsons internal falcon placements.

Direct links.

Not to change your mind about how you have incorporated it, just interesting.

Interesting... I looked at the stats of my interior and it same something like 340,000+ "faces", though I'm not sure it that refers to the actual poly count.

anyway, I was wondering, did you use blueprints, or did you build from scratch?

anyways, here's a preview of the next batch of junk I've been tangling with:

if you guys have any nav console reference that's not screencaps, lay it on me! There's a couple of this on here that have me seriously scratching my head. Such as whatever it is that goes in that large empty circular area on the lower panel. Take a look at it here:

What the hell is that??

First off, your work is fantastic, I have been following this thread with great anticipation!!!! Secondly, before I joined this group, I attempted to build this console (image below) and could not find the resources I needed. I have recently started over, and I just wanted to tell you how excited I am that you have decided to render this. Please continue, I can't wait to use it as a visual reference to complete my full size replica!!!

First try (Not accurate)

Fuzzual,

If you do built a 1:1 console from my model, I can't wait to see it. PM me and maybe we can work out a schematic for you, with the right dimensions and layout.

Ozzy,

thanks! I had previously theorized that the Johnston's interior you posted was drawn over a trace of the actual falcon blueprints. I think this overlay proves it. I simply matched up his drawing of the interior with the Falcon plans from ESB. The fit is so perfect, you kind of can't tell it's an overlay.

Not only does it show that, at some point, the interior was being designed to actually fit the exterior, but it also shows that the ESB and ANH falcons are identical in shape and design (if not exterior greebles. discounting of course that the ANH Falcon was only half a ship).

I wonder what made them give birth to the ship of riddles instead??

wow I have just died and gone to himinn, fab image steve, just when you think the pics could'nt get any better... they do!

Soooooooo...

what´s the polycount atm? ;)

Dang, it looks really, really good, I wonder how long the current version takes to render in indigo (oh, that little program has come a long way since I did the first German language version, before that guy "shape" ?!)

heh, the polycount must be in the bazillion range by now, and as you can see, I've barely started to greeble the exterior. I'll have to check on that.

I'm going to need a better computer by the end of this.

running indigo at full speed (ie not in background mode) I rendered this over night. I just discovered using component instancing, which loads the geometry of repeating sketchup components only once, instead of whenever they appear. It really speeds things up, since, at last count, I have something like over 1000 component groups, which are almost all repeated multiple times. Scenes that are lit only by the sun go a lot faster too. I once had an interior with multiple light sources rendering for over 40 hours and it still wasn't done...

thanks Manfromnaboo!

I've seen that Haynes Manual mockup floating around, I love it.

Steve, I really, really like what you are doing and I am very grateful you share it with all of us.

It would also be fantastic if there was something like a Haynes manual (if the Falcon was real)...

BUT

this published piece of crap? Really? I can understand if some fanboys drool over it (it's licensed! It's from the flanneled one! It must be good!), but experts like you?

Unimaginative & unworkable floor plan (this one seems to be what LFL have settled on), the dimensions are all out too. The rim trench is only 1m or so high, yet they have internal compartments with standing room, all the way to the edge... that's for Ewoks & Jawas only, huh?

They also don't even know the shape of the chess lounge... They have no means of access into forward cargo rooms... Where is the mandibular freight loading mechanism?

It's a shame the definite trailblazer Bob Brown (Ship of Riddles) does not get a credit at all (but Curtis Saxton for example did) - it seems the authors don't even know his work ever existed - although it's still the best compendium for all things "Millenium Falcon"!

"Unlike primary competitors Kuat Drive Yards and Sienar Fleet Systems, CEC does not rely heavily on military contracts, and remains primarily dedicated to the civilian market." Yeah, right. And what of those "big correlian ships" Solo claims to have outrun? And the blockade runner and its Gunship variant? The authors don't even know the films!

:behave

Rant over.

Cheers!

Hah! Falk, I had no idea they really made one.

I was loving it on the basis of a hypothetical manual, and harkening back to flipping through my dad's old grease stained manuals for his millennium-falcon-like propane-burning El Camino, with mismatched body panels, trashed interior, and rewired dash (he made a lot of special modifications himself...)

I have no doubt I would simply guffaw at layouts and details in the published book you're talking about.

That indeed sounds great!

Knew it mate!

Cheers (and keep on drawin')!

Ummmmmm.... Uhhh....

um...

I mean... are they trying to say Solo's modifications were more extensive than previously thought? or... or what?

That image above is for the passenger transport version.. there were two different types of yt-1300's.. a passenger and a freight... hence why the above label says "YT-1300p"

and yeah.. i hated all the inconsistencies with the different blue prints.. thats why the section of corridor leading from the cargo bay to the bridge hallway is too big in my project.. not like in the movies.

by the way steve.. ive finished my project, thanks a bunch to your cockpit images as well.. your a champ.. see what you think

here's some more, then.

Truly amazing work. One question though. Is the exterior based on the 32in or 5ft version? I ask this because the side of the turret looks like that of the 32in but has the details of the 5ft version.

Can't wait to see her finished.

I know the Haynes manual will be inconsistent, illogical and, quite frankly, laughable at times but I've still just ordered one (at half price it must be said)... I do feel like a bit of a sucker but being a Star Wars fan I'm used to it by now.

Now back on topic. Steve, the Falcon is just looking better and better. It really inspires me to push on with my SketchUp projects in the hope I can achieve results of a similar standard.
