Rorschach: The Definitive Thread

Here are a couple of shots of my Rorschach hat from Penman, or BendingOak.

He nailed it!

Hey everyone! First time poster on the RPF so please.. be gentle.

Anyway, I've been lurking for a while, leeching off the information, so I thought I'd share some of the stuff I found, and detail how my costume's coming.

First up, the Mask:

Image58.jpg

Not too much to say about this. It's one of Kwally's amazing Heat-Reactive Masks, which is why it looks a light around the mouth parts (hard to get a good shot of the "before" because I like breathing :D).

Image59.jpg

Next, the Hat:

Image60.jpg

I managed to scrounge up the dough to get one of the Texas Hatters hats, which I'm astounded by! It's the nicest hat I've ever owned, plus they labled the inside band with "Rorschach" and "Made Especially For" with my name. I've compared it to a lot of stills (which'll be hard for you guys, because skylights suck in terms of taking pictures) and it looks to me that all they did to it was dirty it a little.

Image61.jpg

It was about a two month wait time, mostly because after I placed the order by phone, they forgot to send me with PayPal bill :rolleyes, but they were very quick with their responses otherwise.

Image63.jpg

I'm skipping the Trenchcoat because that's the piece I'm still having a bit of trouble with. I'm using a backup currently, that's alright, but too dark.

Time for the Scarf:

Image64.jpg

This was a find on eBay, which is 100% cashmere, and you can kind of tell, but it's an offwhite color. I still need to give it some wear so it looks ratty.

Image65.jpg

Also, in response in it being hard to determine how long the scarf is (this will be helpful for comic book Rorschachs, anyway) when Rorschach was at the Crimebusters meeting, he had his trenchcoat open, so some of you could use that as a reference!

Image66.jpg

The Gloves:

Image67.jpg

Kind of hard to see, but they're the EXACT same style as the movie gloves. They're your basic dress gloves, and I managed to snag a pair off eBay searching for "brown dress gloves". My one complaint is that they're quite a bit darker than the movie. Any tips on lightening them up?

Image68.jpg

The Boots:

Image69.jpg

eBay'd. They're vintage Beatle boots (which I've wanted a pair for forever), which the toes are a bit pointier than I would have liked. If anyone has a good source for round-toed chelsea boots, I'd be much obliged. :D

The Suit:

Annoying as %@$& to find. It amounted to me scouring every website, eBay entry, thrift store, suit store, and whatever else to find. It's an actual purple pinstripe suit (meaning, I didn't get a gray suit and dye it).

You can also make out some of my "Behind You" cardboard sign in the bottom left. :p

Kind of blurry, but you get the idea. :p

If you guys want better shots of anything, lemme know. Most of my lighting comes from the skylights in my room, so it makes for awkward picture taking.

Dunno how much interest there is in this thread anymore, but I was looking back through the Film Companion, and there's a really good shot of Rorschach's scarf from back when he was in the Crimebusters. Since he wore his trenchcoat open back in those days, you can see it's length!

I'll throw up some scans later if I can manage to do it.

Also, there's a lot of very good pictures of his costume, as well as others. I definitely suggest picking it up for any costumers/prophunters/builders!

Definitely post those! Thanks Setzer!

petevenkmen- how much did you pay for the hat?

I have the same hat, they sell two styles the one is a lighter weight which goes for $200 the movie accurate one goes for $300. 2 months is a long time to wait, i had them make mine and they got it out to me within 2 weeks.

*EDIT - sorry i thought you ment how much were they from texas hatters. I beleive petevenken got it from the other hat maker on this board, and they are the same price. If thats the case than go with Texas Hatters since they did make them for the movie

Really? Geez. They were kind of unresponsive most of the time. I got an intial email, and sent my order through there, then never got a response. Waited a couple weeks. So, then I put my order in by phone (the woman who answered was very helpful), and asked if payment by PayPal was alright, which it was. They said I would get an invoice in due time. So, I gave it about 2 weeks or so, with no invoice. I sent them an email asking what was up, and got a reply almost instantly about how busy things were there, and that the invoice should be in my inbox, which it was, and that I would get another email when the hat shipped.

So! Then I made my payment, expecting the hat to have been made or close to it by this point, as it had been about a month or so since I initially ordered. Not the case as another few weeks passed with no shipping email. I sent another email asking if it had been shipped and I just hadn't recieved an email, or if there was a problem of somekind. Never did get a response to that email. So, at this point I'm getting a little scared, because it was a bit of money. Well, eventually I did get the tracking email (I think like, a week later), and the hat came in 4 days after that, coming the exact same day as the mask. I still have the emails, and my initial order was March 23rd and the hat was delivered on June 1st, so a little over 2 months.

Sorry to hijack the thread, just wanted share my experience for anyone thinking of getting a Texas Hatters hat. It's great quality, don't get me wrong, and I did end up getting it eventually, just dunno what the deal was.

His hat is a refurbished old hat I did for him.

My watchmen hat in pure rabbit like the movie hat was made is 225 and if you wanted it in pure beaver felt 275. I get my felt and ribbon from the same place as the movie hat.

hey guys! great work, and everything's looking great! i sort of pull off a day-to-day/contemporary style rorschach, with a short black trench coat, black hat, and different scarves. it's great, cause i tend to dress with flair anyways, and my friends were pretty tired of an every day joker (!) so i'll contemporise rorschach!:lol

now to my main point: i was just reading the graphic novel, and realised that rorschach stated that his mask is made of a latex. anyone else think that they made the right choice of fabric for the movie?

also does the movie scarf have tassels, or none like in the novel?

Movie version has no tassels. There's a good shot of it in the Film Companion book, and the Crimebusters extended scene in the director's cut shows it really well, too. I've been trying to get a scan of it up, but my scanner has been nuts lately. I'll try it again when I get home tonight, though.

ok, so i was walking around some shops the other day, wearing the above mentioned jacket, and i was carrying my shoulder bag. it had a couple of heavy books in it, and it broke off one of my epaulet buttons - the left one!!! :lol i just had to share it with other's who would understand!!!

I found a guy on YouTube who actually made a spot-on coat who I comissioned to whip one up for me. I'll let you guys know how that pans out.

Thanks for the compliment. Heh.

Thought I'd direct you guys to the dude doing up my coat (I asked him if he was cool with it, and he is). From what I've seen of mine, and some other coats he's working on, they're really stellar and some of the closest to being SA that I've seen so far. Here, I'll post some pics:
