Rolls Royce Derwent MK9 Teardown and Lessons Learned

Wow! Yeah! Single compressor stage and single turbine stage! And it worked!

4000-112 (commercial, for the 777)

looks a bit different inside.
But you can see the fan, blue LPC, purple HPC, combustor and the turbine stages at the back.

So, you have alternating rotating (blades) and fixed (stator) airfoils, with reduced area as you move through the engine. Fun stuff.

Everyone likes to say “rocket science” but rockets are far easier to engineer actually.

From what I've seen on here (I could be wrong, hard to find all the threads about the engines) is that most of the found ones were in field upgraded MK8's to MK9's. And not all MK8->MK9's have the right parts. From what I've gathered the MK8's and MK9's with the Obi BP are not stock MK8's or MK9's, they have a mod that was added. To me it's likely my engine was before that mod was added to the MK9 line. The extra bracket on my outer chambers makes sense from a stability perspective and my guess would be that it was an enhancement. In a document I found they mention mod '596' being the main difference between MK8 and MK9 being high energy igniters?

I've added the whole document I got to my google drive folder: rrderwent589
This isn’t the correct Mod.

Balance pipes were under Mod 585 (16.10.1952 and applicable to MK8,9) and flame tubes under Mod 622 (8.7.1952 and applicable to MK5,8,9 but only when in conjunction with 585 will the holes where the inter-connectors connect be the correct size for IG-88). lonepigeon shared quite a bit of research back in 2005. Hope that helps.

Hey, yeah. Just saying the difference between being a MK8 and MK9 seems to be mod '596'. Good to know mod 585 is the BP one and 622 is the flame tube one.
