Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

Apparently this guy isn't aware that there have been SW novels and games for 20+ years that haven't involved Luke and Co. that were very successful. Not to this scale of course, but still accepted by fans.

Apples to oranges. The EU was a big fish in a small pond catering to a diminished fan base. This film is coming on the heals of TFA and needs to draw the same general audience that has become the new fandom but doing so without the same characters. I think he makes a good point.

That's why I said the scales are completely different. I just meant that fans specifically will accept a good SW story even if the main cast is not there.

Well, my mother has a small pond, which is kept clean by a pump and filter, and iirc, one of the filter stages includes a powerful UV light or something, to kill off bacteria. Maybe the green light neutralizes certain agents/toxins in the atmosphere?

I can't help but wonder if this movie will be seen by many as to what disney can truly do with the star wars franchise when they don't have an entire franchise running on it's success...

this should be a better benchmark than episode 7 i think

Which is, in a way, too bad.

I almost wish that they had started with this than with epi7. To get them up and running.

And I really think Abrams was a mistake. Star trek has shown us how fast and loose he plays it with Canon. How divisive he is with fans.

sadly, he's a current hot commodity. and all hollywood does is go with 'safe bet' known hollywood commodities. regardless if it's good for the franchise or not.
at least with this one, he did a better job with star wars because he UNDERSTANDS star wars. it's pretty clear he cared nothing about star trek and just used it as a stepping stone.

Just like bay cares nothing about transformers and tmnt. just like feig cares nothing about ghostbusters. just like whoever was in charge of the knight rider reboot on nbc knew nothing about Knight Rider or what made it tick. Just like whoever did the Thundercats reboot (thundercats as a human rock band? really WB?) new nothing about thundercats...

sigh.

It's more than pretty clear. He specifically said in interviews that he never really liked Trek, and had always wanted it to be more like Star Wars -- fast and exiting.

The Knight Rider reboot from a few years back? With Val Kilmer as the voice of the new Mustang KITT? That was Glen Larson -- the guy who did the original.

I didn't terribly mind that. The original one wasn't exactly great

Was it really?

It's been so long since I've seen that version, only a one and done first run, that I remembered nothing about it as to how terrible it was.

Wow...shows how even the greats can fall if they don't stay in practice.

that show was so far removed from what knight rider was, that by the time they got BACK to what it was at the end, the audience had left.
That, and the pilot and the series had two distinct tones...

oh well......

If Abrams had really understood Star Wars he wouldn't have done a DS3. I'd forgive him if it was someone else's decision.

i'd like to think that was more disney playing it safe.

Sony and/or Reitman does the same thing with ghostbusters, reusing the same plotlines over and over again.

but, i know nothing about abhrams other than what he's done with star wars and star trek, so i could be wrong.

If JJ wasnt on SW we would have gotten a green screen talking heads movie lower in quality than the prequels. If we got Lucas' EP7 it would have been kids in space stealing dads car. JJ is a huge SW fan, nerd, geek. EP7 was an impossible task under the worst time frame possible. Its safe to say he pulled it off but not everyone is happy. The kicker is how displeased everyone would have been if he wasnt at the helm.

My thoughts as well, contaminated environments or something, maybe they have sound and light up when the air is bad to warn the wearer

I'll be super disillusioned if we get Death Star 4.0. That's the final nail in coffin for the new trilogy for me.
Thank goodness these other spinoffs are good.
I still don't understand the reasoning of 8 starting right after 7.
What is the final story arc of these films?
Any guesses?
