Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

I also think the glowing bits are weird because it doesn't make sense, given what we've always understood was the purpose of that part of the typical TK helmet. Why would respirators ever glow, unless the canon explanation is that those are not respirators? From a design standpoint, I think it looks pretty tacky, especially being lime green like that. They would look better just being white lights, if anything.

I agree on the green lights on the helmet, why? The only reason I can see that working is if the lights were inside the helmet. Glows a color when your filter "needs changing" so it would be an indicator light or the light is on when the filters are turned on.. Even then it would be inside the helmet for the wearer to see. Other than that it looks like it was stuck on there to just look cool.

My initial thinking was perhaps these were more "special ops" or "Swat" troopers.. And the green lights acted to enhance night vision of some sort?
But they have them on during a sunny beach day apparently.. And they have lenses which could likely have night vision capabilities on their own. The angle would be questionable too I suppose.

Perhaps there is no function at all, and it's just a bad design.

The lights doesn't appear to obvious in these pics:

Well, I've got to say I am absolutely thrilled by the bulk of the artwork !!!!!!
Its very obvious to me that the teams at Lucasfilm have put alot of effort in to trying to recapture the spirit of the OT in this movie,if not just for us then for themselves. The design aesthetic is brilliantly evocative of a New Hope and I'm really excited by it. The Death Troopers are just great additions.
I think this is going to be a tremendous experience for us old timers who saw SW when it was first released back in the seventies.

Right, it doesn't look like they are on all the time. Perhaps they are some sort of optical scanner? Of course, the question remains why the respirators have lights at all...unless they aren't respirators!

Maybe deathtroopers aren't human? Maybe they put vision enhancing lenses where the respirators usually are and false lenses where humans would see from?

I say go for a real world reason for the lights...The suits is all black, and they wanted to give it a little color, so they just stuck some lights in what are assumed to be respirators, and called it a day, because someone in the art department though it looked good... or something ;)

They're filters of some kind (I can't read the first part):
