Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

If you ever have a complaint and think you have some grand ideas of what would make THE Star Wars film that people deserve... just come to RPF and read through these threads.

It is a monumental challenge that Disney is confronting making these movies, and this site just solidifies that. Some people want more OT tie-in, some people want less. Some people want more PT references, some want less. Everyone seems to have their own ideas of what Star Wars IS, and nobody is on the EXACT same page. You will NEVER see a Star Wars film that satisfies 100% of the fanbase because of that.

The fact that Disney/ LFL was able to even make a single successful SW movie should be one of the greatest achievements of the last thousand years.

It is crazy how much people put their own perspectives and ideas into Star Wars (myself included).

The thing is, Disney/LFL are making exactly the SW I want......back to the OT style,...more focus on Rogues & Scoundrels, less twirly lightsabers with super-powered Jedi,....a distance away from the Prequels......the only negative thing is the slow slide back to Lucasville in the Rebels cartoon

I want Star Wars to be cool again,.....to appeal to all, not just a sector, Marvel can do it,....unlike DC

But could ET be a multi dimensional species.....huh?......Were those creatures the exact species as ET.....or did they just look a bit like them??......

R2 & 3-PO's Hieroglyphics were a joke thrown in easter egg style,....or R2 floating about in JJ's Star Trek......How about the Falcon in LA in 2019 in BladeRunner

Theres a potato & a tennis shoe in the asteroids in ESB

The droid glpyhs were an easter egg, "wink wink yay look at this!"
The E.Ts were a wink back. But they make things canon and complicate the entire way things work, there's a few "ET is a jedi" theories out there, and they get tiring.

It can be in a galaxy outside our universe, and we do have doppelgangers. How come beings always show up looking like Warwick Davis? If the Raiders universe is in the SW universe, why does Indy look like Han? I think GL would have a simple in-universe explanation like "some things look similar, some humans look alike, but hey that happens"

Furthermore, I read WILLOW takes place in the SW universe. So even more complications to canon :lol

I also like the big robot...what's his name. I'd love to see some action Droids like IG88 kicking ass

It is interesting that they are keeping such a tight rein on any appearance of Galen Erso. Also, I didn't notice that in the shot of the DS over Jedha, the DS is upside down!

I'm going to guess and say they are lining up for a test shot of the super laser.

I base that conclusion on both of your premises. Your consumption is heavily weighted to films produced specifically for an American audience and studios recognizing that their income has historically been predicated on success at the US box office makes films that appeal to that audience. That's not objective, that's subjective. As far as what serves the story, we haven't seen it so that's just speculation at this point. In their universe, there is no China so their ethnicity has no effect on the story one way or another until we put some import on it. China could easily become the largest film market in the world and we may find pop culture very different in a decade.

When you say timelines I assume you mean the era's in which the films take place relative to each other. It certainly can be confusing for the general audience but I think over the next 6 months the marketing efforts will aggressively establish context for R1.

For the most part, Hollywood/America has been at the forefront of cinema because newsflash, it is made and perfected here. Its not that american movies dont appeal to all audiences, but putting in a specific demographic to cater them in movies is ridiculous, and being pushed by studios because its blatantly for making money. Thats all Im saying, I think it sucks. I doubt pop culture in the USA will differ that much in a decade just because of China... Cmon. They are second world and communist. I think to say that is a bit of a stretch. All Im saying is that I dont like it, and its pretty freaking obvious. I think of it as a douchey move, something that Michael Bay would do/does.

Yes, you assume correctly. Yeah, for people like us its no big deal, Im just saying for the regular movie going public. I dont have social media, or cable so you guys are my link to what they are doing as far as marketing goes lol

China is the second largest economy in the world behind the United States. Based on GDP China has surpassed the US. They also have a population of 1.375 billion that are becoming more economicly mobile and affluent. And I make all these observations without personal editorial. I have no strong feelings one way or another I'm simply making an analysis as to why we are seeing these changes and how it will impact the industry going forward.

Well up and down are relative in space but that does seem odd. I thought Alderaan was the test shot?

As per Tarkin Alderaan was a demonstration of the stations full destructive power but that wouldn't preclude a less powerful test in the R1 time frame.

OK,....if you think of SW as a fairytale being told to us,....it's set in a different universe & a different time, the storyteller doesn't describe how the main characters look, there's no direct reference to them being human,....but he describes this young character going into a bar & being hassled by a couple of rogues,...one looks a bit like a walrus & the other has a melted face....in your mind (if you never had seen the film) you conjure up that the young character & one of the rogues are human,.....so to explain that there are humans speaking English in a Galaxy far, far away a long time ago is that what we see on screen is an Earthly interpretation of the story we are told

X wings are called X wings because the letter X resembles the shape of the open wings in attack mode,...but in Star Wars aurebesh the letter X is a triangle,....they say X wing,....but that is our Earthly translation

There is no connection to the human race,...(like Battlestar Galactica)......they look & sound like us because that is the translation to us on film

Thats my take.....it might be wrong

This is MY theory as to what may happen

So I have an idea about what's happening in Rogue One now. It's a 2 part plot.

-Obvious, stealing plans for the death star

Minor spoiler:
.
.

Donnie Yen came out and said that Jedha is a source/the source of Kyber crystals

so the 2nd one? Krennic is going to Jedha to get a big ass Khyber crystal to power the Death Star turbo-lazer.

This is presumably that the current one is either not powerful enough or don't have it just yet- which leads to seeing Jyn and Cassian flying through what looks like a micheal bay 2012 end-of-the-world sequence. I'm pretty sure that's the city after getting blown to smithereens as the desired Khyber crystal is underneath (or actually contained) within that Plateau

So, prior to China, who was second behind us? Germany? Japan? You didnt see us catering to them for anything in particular. Yeah, we are seeing these changes because Hollywood is selling out to China lol. Oh well. Its not a big deal, I just dont like it cause its painfully obvious and takes me out of the story. I want to get immersed when I watch a movie.

Have to say that the variety character types and casting is very much on point.
Nice breath and depth.
The Force was always kinda mystical quasi-religious to me.
So If you don't care for the blind Shaolin monk, there's another brother with a BFG. And he's kinda bada$$ pi$$ed.
Said pages back around the first trailer, that to really throw a curveball should have casted a non-UK/Aus Empire villian.
No Jedi please and the only lightsaber I wanna see used belongs to that 7'2" asthmatic, giving the Director a death sentance for failure.

Will we get another full trailer before release?

Japan was number one from 1985-1995 actually. Prior to that it was the Soviet Union at number two, so that argument won't fly. In regards to Japan, they are huge fans of US pop culture and consume our output, so again the US has been the only game in town for decades.

i understand why you are upset I'm just providing context. And again I ask you to consider how can other audiences enjoy the immersive experience you crave when the characters in film don't have any commonality with them? It really shouldn't be a hardship to be a bit more inclusive.

Ok, so, did we see a bunch of Japanese movies catering to western audiences? Trust me, I know, when I went there I saw a SDSU hate for a hundred bucks, I couldnt believe it.

I understand, youre right of course, I just wish movie studios wouldnt do that. It sucks. Thats the thing though, they also have their own cinema as well. They dont make movies to cater to us specifically, and then their own local stuff, so why should we? Just cause we have the best stuff? Just kind of weird. Not a fan.

"Until this battle station is FULLY operational we are vulnerable" I think R1 will give more meaning to ANH's dialogue, I'm sure it has smaller lasers apart from the super laser, and hope to see a lot more features. They are prepping a weapons test afterall :D
