Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

Whoa. I slipped into some next level nerdery in this thread! :lol

But yeah, one thing that bothered me about this trailer was the asian dude, and the kung fu. Yawn. Seems like such a lazy way of putting something in there that could be done differently. China pandering maybe? TFA didnt do as well as they hoped it would in China...just sayin.

For some reason, even though I noticed it but didnt bother me, was the AT AT rocket to the face and it wincing. I thought it looked cool, besides, how else would the driver deflect the blast aside from moving its head?

Having martial arts fighting style is n a film is not China pandering. However, as I pointed out, having two well known Chinese actors will certainly strengthen the appeal of this film in China, much more so then TFA. TFA's issue in China was simply SW isn't really as well known their and part of pop culture. R1 doesn't necisarrily have that same baggage.

Now a days... It might be, especially with chinese actors, in this movie, I think it is. I havent looked it up, cause I dont really care, but to not say that, especially in a movie thats supposed to take place in a galaxy far far away seems a tad suspect. Im personally tired of all the kung fu stuff as well, thats why I liked TFA, there wasnt any flippant martial arts anything. Thats what Im saying, of course they are trying to appeal to a Chinese audience, and to me, that sucks. But whatever. Also, please dont compare me to anyone else in any other thread. :unsure

I don't believe I did compare you to anyone else? In regards to China, it would s fast becoming the second largest market for Us films and as long as films are for profit ventures you can be sure studios will incorporate el mental that will appeal to that market. And I don't see that as a bad thing, we in the US have been pandered to for decades, often alienating other audiences.

I was disappointed in the lack of a light saber........I know, I know, this is not a movie about the Jedi, I get it. Still, felt kinda weird being a Star Wars movie and feeling like there won't be a light saber duel. EVERY Star Wars movie has had a light saber fight. I'm hoping Vader will bust his out and do some damage, would be cool to see a quick Kanan / Ezra vs. Vader scene! Hey, if Saw Gerrera is in it, they could be as well!

Also kind of weird that there's no recognizable characters save it for a few; Vader, Stormies, and Mon Mothma, and no stories to attach to those characters. There is plenty that is obviously Star Wars, TIEs, AT-ATs, Death Star, etc, and I'm looking forward to being introduced to these new characters. But it's just odd for me to try and wrap my head around the fact that most of these characters have never been heard of before and are not linked to any of the other 7 movies (well, at least that we know of at this point). I know some would argue the same is true for the prequels, but we did have Yoda, a young Obi, a young Anakin, Chewbacca, etc, characters we could identify with in the SW we know.

I'm still excited and looking forward to the movie, just wondering how it'll fit into my view of the Star Wars universe.

Also looking forward to the inevitable project run of the Death Star plans disk / cassette / drive!

Some of the arguments on this site absolutely kill me. You could write some good comedy regarding some of the things on this forum.

I know what you mean! I listen to people argue about, among other things, how it makes no sense that a TIE Fighter or X-Wing could fly because of its design. Really! This is science FICTION folks, it's not supposed to make sense. I just want to be entertained with a movie like Star Wars, I don't need it to make sense when compared to our reality.

I loved the trailer but it lacked aliens in my opinion, I mean, I know the Empire is racist against them, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be anywhere. Other than that I hope there will be loads of Stormtroopers, too much rebel propaganda to my taste :p. Still very excited for the movie though, as much as I want it to be and stay summer, I can't wait for Christmas.

The BTS video was lousy with aliens. However I did notice still no Mads Mikkelson to be seen!

You didnt, I just wanted to say so before you did in case you were thinking about it ;) And I understand that, but seems to me, if the film stands on its own, it doesnt need to incorporate chinese refererences. Who knows what the chinese people think, they might think its asinine to do that as well. Just seems like a crappy part on the film makers to me. Especially something like Star Wars. Who have we been pandering from? What movies from other countries have pandered to us? This pandering to China thing is relatively new.

sick as a dog last night I ended up falling asleep. on my lunch break now and just saw the trailer

I don't know if it's because I'm sick.. or because there's no Jedi in it.. or maybe because there is no skywalker or r2...

I'm just not feeling this flick, I don't know why?

Actually I don't think that's necisarrily true, that foreign made films don't try and have some appeal to American audiences. However it's academic, the realty is the vast majority of film entertainment is created here and is decidedly Amercan audience centric. You need to be mindful when you accuse a film of pandering to a specific audience in a different country you are having that reaction because you have been pandered to your entire cinema going life. So when they try and broaden the appeal, the initial knee jerk response is resistance. Perhaps we should keep an open mind and allow for new story or character elenents that we may not connect to but other audience members may. There's plenty of room in a film to be accommodative and it's not a bad thing as long as it serves the story.

Martial arts styles were definitely established by formerly canon EU sources (teras kasi is one of the most well known), so that doesn't bother me one whit. I'm excited as hell for this movie and plan on being there opening weekend.

I suppose you could also point to the lightsaber combat style of the PT having a similar influence.

....but perhaps in a galaxy in another Universe,...or a galaxy in a previous Universe????

But E.T exists in that universe and ours.

An 3PO and R2 exist in our universe.

So it there is good evidence it is our universe, different galaxies and time.

But....its not serving the story. You know why they are doing it. Having a chinese guy do kung fu in a Star Wars movie? Im genuinely asking, what foreign films do that? Granted I havent seen a lot of foreign films, but maybe you can recommend something. Yeah, exactly. Its created here, so why wouldnt it be? I totally disagree with that statement, that I have been pandered to my entire cinematic going life. What are you basing that on, that movies that I watch are for the most part made in America, and Im American? Or that movies are a business, and they are trying to make good films for me to spend money on them? I sort of admire what youre trying to say, but I dont exactly agree with it. Thats the thing, it doesnt serve the story. Its not like the Chinese actors you mentioned are playing aliens or something where their face is obscured by make up, they were hired specifically to cater to the chinese market.

Im just saying I grow tired of the martial arts that are prevalent in movies right now, kind of like an overload. Thats why the lightsabre duel in TFA was great cause it was so raw and primitive. Not wonky and disjointed in the origianl trilogy, but unrefined. Previous stuff in the PT was too choreographed and was almost like a ballet, which wasnt interesting to me.

Forgive me if this has been touched on before, but what do you guys think about different time lines being released regarding the movies? The stories/vs the episodes?

Probably something that we are going to have to get used to with the first couple of spin offs.......LFL/Disney are showing us the other non-jedi population for a bit......R1 & the Han Solo movie.....

I think theres plenty of space for this style of SW,.....I for example, have been overdosed with the Jedi, with the Prequels & I'm very happy with the mix that TFA had with it's characters.

There'll be plenty of sabre action in Ep8 going by the press

But could ET be a multi dimensional species.....huh?......Were those creatures the exact species as ET.....or did they just look a bit like them??......

R2 & 3-PO's Hieroglyphics were a joke thrown in easter egg style,....or R2 floating about in JJ's Star Trek......How about the Falcon in LA in 2019 in BladeRunner

Theres a potato & a tennis shoe in the asteroids in ESB

I base that conclusion on both of your premises. Your consumption is heavily weighted to films produced specifically for an American audience and studios recognizing that their income has historically been predicated on success at the US box office makes films that appeal to that audience. That's not objective, that's subjective. As far as what serves the story, we haven't seen it so that's just speculation at this point. In their universe, there is no China so their ethnicity has no effect on the story one way or another until we put some import on it. China could easily become the largest film market in the world and we may find pop culture very different in a decade.

When you say timelines I assume you mean the era's in which the films take place relative to each other. It certainly can be confusing for the general audience but I think over the next 6 months the marketing efforts will aggressively establish context for R1.
