Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

Ah, thanks.
I have seen women in the Army who could kick as much backside as they wanted in a Star Wars universe. I don't see Stormtroopers running very long distances or carrying very heavy loads much in those movies. Rey can fly and she can shoot (and handle a lightsabre), which is pretty much all I see that is needed.
As for the Rogue One character, I have ZERO problem accepting she can fly, which is what they apparently needed her for.
So, let's go through the 'needed skills for SW' checklist...

Can a woman:
Handle a firearm? Yep, I saw it countless times myself. I tint wife can shoot better than some Rangers I served with.
Fly a fighter craft? Yep. I just ask the Navy of Air Force that question. They've been doing it for a few years now with no problems.
Run? Yep. Look at who's running in any marathon. Plenty of women there.

So looks like to me like a woman could easily have the skills to do well in the SW universe!
Well the specific issue being addressed was that someone had a problem suspending disbelief that the female character could dispatch multiple male antagonists in a hand to hand engagement.

Heck, I know very few men who can do that, even the trained ones!
I knew a Navy SEAL who had the *S* beaten out of him by a group of rednecks at a bar who found out he was a SEAL so therefore thought he could take on an infinite number of other people. Problem was, he believed his own training and thought so, too. He later said, "Man, I totally forgot was wasn't packing weapons at the time and that I was outnumbered [6-to-1] at the time!"
Again, hand-to-hand almost never happens in real life (except in fist fights with 1-2 other people). History proves this to be so.

It's worth noting, I'm 5'10", 165 lbs. and a competitive Ironman distance triathlete and sub 3 hour marathoner. It would likely not be a stretch to say even at age 47 I am in better physical shape then 99% of the people here. Having said that, a fit woman well trained in combat could drop me in a New York minute.

Oh Bryan.....stop it

I guess you missed the photographs of them walking while the men carried their 80 pound backpacks for them.... On TOP of having to carry their own.

Come on man, drag your knuckles and misogyny somewhere else.

As for the 80-pound rucksack comment, I wonder if DARKSIDE72 has been to Benning and seen the same happening for the male Ranger candidates at various times, not to mention the times the instructors would have one carry another person's gear as part of the leadership scenario going on. In my officer training, I was once, "killed" in the scenario to see if anyone would step up and handle my leadership role on that STX lane. I was fireman-carried by someone and another had to carry my ruck, weapon and map case. It sure wasn't because I couldn't carry that stuff, myself.
Generally speaking, yes, women and men are built differently and handle stresses in different ways (for example, I was once told that women can handle being in a desert and dehydration easier, but I have long forgotten why nor do I know if it's true). But it's silly to think that any man could successfully hump through, say, the Ranger course (as plenty cannot) and that no woman could...

The worst thing in the trailer is that klaxon. If RO doesn't win an Oscar for sound editing, that will be the reason. I think the sound is a Taun Taun getting crushed in the trash compactor.

Horrible.
The klaxon is a sound effect from the OT.

One Ranger told me, "The Marquis of Queesbury was a [pansy]. The fight isn't done until you're sure that their body isn't in the same arrangement as you found it. If they're still breathing, you better have planned that as you intend on questioning them for intel later. Otherwise, you're wrong."
It's more like that scene in Raiders where Indy caps the swordsman with the Webley revolver. Fair fights are for movies. Throat/sucker punch and kick where the sun don't shine if you've lost your sidearm or knife.

The Reacher method, I like it.

Also for those complaining about the ridiculousness of a guy with the staff taking on Stormtroopers with blasters, how do we know they aren't purposely trying to take him down alive?

Sure you could just shoot him, but if their orders are to bring him alive they've got no choice but to try taking him down. Maybe they could stun him, but doing so could knock him out too long as well. Time may be of the essence in questioning him

They're standing around pretty casual... I don't think this scene is simply 5 guys vs. man with stick.

FWIW, there were allegations that the two women who graduated from US Army Ranger school did not have to face the same ordeals that the men did. This has been refuted over and over again.

There are plenty of resources out there about this journey. (<-- those underlined bits are actual links that have real info and real sources, rather than innuendo, conjecture, hearsay and BS).

"No matter what we at Ranger School say, the non-believers will still be non-believers. We could have invited each of you to guest walk the entire course, and you would still not believe, we could have video recorded every patrol and you would still say that we “gave” it away. Nothing we say will change your opinion. I and the rest of our cadre are proud of the conduct of our soldiers, NCOs, and officers; they took the mission assigned and performed to the Ranger standard. Rangers Lead the Way!"

- MAJ Jim Hathaway, the current RTB executive officer

Ranger student Zachary Wagner said he was once assigned to carry a heavy load during a course and turned to his fellow service members to ease his load.

He went down the line of his team asking for help. He was met with silence until he reached Griest.

“She, just as broken and tired, took it from me almost with excitement,” he said. “I thought she was crazy for that, but she’s just enthusiastic. That’s who she is.”

A great deal of this conversation is about someone making wild accusations based on their own misogynistic views - without even seeing this movie or what it actually involves. There is a lengthy history of women being involved in the military - both in combat and support roles (like spies). He's been proven wrong repeatedly.

...and I never even got to mention Nancy Wake - a British Special Operations Executive who killed an SS Officer with a judo chop to the throat.

I wonder who made all the old-school uniforms, like the X-wing pilot stuff (and if you'll be seeing licensed replicas of them, too, someday)?
The Reacher method, I like it.
It's something the war movies don't show much with US soldiers because people don't wanna see it (though recent movies like, "Fury" have done a decent job showing that not every GI was John Wayne from the movies).
Once, in training, we dealt with a scenario where off-duty soldiers were playing 'civilian refugees' on the wire. One of my dismounts spotted a (plastic training replica) RPG tube being leveled by one of them. He opened up with his .50 caliber (with blanks and a MILES emitter) on everyone immediately adjacent to that person. Now, that technically vilated our rules of engagement because you're not using the proper weapon on the right target (you don't use a tank's main gun on one enemy soldier in the open, for example), and he 'killed' plenty of what we had to assume were 'civilians'.
The Brigade Sergeant Major (who just happened to be standing nearby) was less than amused, as was some of the Brigade staff strap-hangers watching on. Typical high-end staff mentality.
One the range judges (who said later that he'd been with the 10th MTN in Somalia) said it straight, "Yeah, you'll be standing tall before the man afterwards to explain your actions, no question on that. But at least you're ALIVE to do so, Hooah?"

I still can't believe people are complaining about a female lead, samurai, etc. and no one has complained because there's a SUPER BATTLEDROID in there. I mean for a lot of you seeing something from the Prequels should ruin the whole movie. :lol ;)

Where, Jason, I missed that. I do see glimpses of the droid motion capture character played by Tudyk.
