Roddenberry -- NEW TOS Communicator Prop??

That would be one helluva early Christmas present!

I would hope they know that a new phaser would sell extremely well

as for what rodd.com MAY be offering, i believe they simply wanted to offer THEIR definitive version of the prop now that so much more has been learned since the screen-used hero was discovered -- their earlier TOS comms were not 100% accurate to the screen--used comms in original series.

I bet they just start selling comms from the same tooling they have been using for a couple reasons.

  1. Both the DSteins and Jlong comms are cast from the originals, you could not get as close to accurate as those two kits are by hacking the pencil box.
  2. The tooling for the kit they have now is there own design from DS9 TAT. They would be throwing out there own 100% screen accurate design to make something that will not be as accurate as the two previously mentioned kits.
It would be interesting but I am not sure I see the point of going through the trouble of retooling. My bet is they will be build ups of the origenal tooling (Kydex shells would be nice though). I suppose they could sell both versions.

Phez -- could well be, but not sure how that would be a new interpretation. using same molds but using kydex vs. ABS plastic would be somewhat underwhelming as far as "an exciting new interpretation of an iconic classic" goes. their teaser says it's "new," so i am hopeful it might be what i'm guessing.

as for dstines and jlong -- sure, those are indeed about as accurate as you can get without having a screen-used original, but to my knowledge, the dstines are hard to come by...saw one recently on ebay for some outrageous amount - i think seller was asking $500 for the kit. cripes. the jlongs are still available from john, no?

i realize this is all speculation, but thought the teaser announcement was worth posting here. time will tell.

Sorry to hear that John. I'm really keen to get one of your kits. If I was to order via your website, will you be able to fulfill it? I understand your time being taken up, I just don't want to feel like I'm going to burden you by ordering. All the best to you and your family in any case.

John, which moire setup is included with the kit? What is the kit cost and how do I get one? Can you suggest someone to me via PM to do hero buildups.

I hope your parent gets better. I went through that with my Mom, but fortunately she got better.

I don't think he ever got $500, it just keeps relisting. The ones that are selling are going for around $300.
 
Well it seems that the Roddenberry folk have shown us a peek a boo image of the TOS Communicator, so let's contact their rep to get a word on the new things to come. Are their customer service reps on the board here?

so, i'll infer that when they say "new" that this will be a new tooling or something different than previous offerings.

but i am a bit dismayed that they would tease something 6 MONTHS in advance to release. geesh. let's hope it happens, as we can never have enough communicator replicas. ;)

They are saying they are hoping to have "more news around Comic Con". Sounds like they won't have anything to show if they just hope to have "news" by summers Comic Con.

That said, "new" sounds good to me. Sounds like they are cooking up something instead of rereleasing. Now if they could only get TOS phasers and TOS phaser multi-sound electronics back on their site, I'd be even more happy.

Who knows, maybe they will announce and/or show something before or during Comic Con. It's just speculation here. They will announce when they have something I guess. The teaser they did got us talking, and maybe that was the plan, while whetting our insatiable appetite for all things TREK!
 
Okay, this thread needs some new updates. 2013 Comic-Con has come and gone. About 8 months back I'd heard that Roddenberry was behind on getting this new Comm out. Not sure what the features are or if it's been shelved. Anyone hear anything? I can't believe that someone didn't pester Roddenberry at Comic-Con to say something.
 
I don't think anyone has heard anything.

I know they have the Proto but that is all
 
yeah, i was hopeful they would have said something more by now. again, kind of strange to tease something 6 months in advance and then 8 months later still no news.
