Rodd.com Communicator Buildups

Just got my communicator kit from Rodd.com and looked over the instructions. It doesn't seem to address the top and bottom surface at all.

I've seen several buildups that look very nice. Some of them have a sanded surface, some simply scour it with 3M pad, others simply apply dullcote. Which is accurate to the hero props?

I hate to tear into this thing halfway prepared, so if you have experience with this kit and have any additional advice that's not covered in the instructions I'd be glad to hear it. Feel free to post pictures to illustrate your points.

Isn't there a textured paint they used on things of that style/period? Think of fleck stone, only with a glossy black finish...

There was a guy on the ASAP board that was making accurate kydex shells. Yo might want to check there.
