Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 10/24/12 - FINAL UPDATE BEFORE HALLOWEEN)

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/06/12 - HELMET OPINION!)

Yeah....crazy that they just picked random buttons. Are they all the same at least?

Glad you like the jacket! I find it a great alternative to spending $500+

How are you going to do your helmet?

All the buttons are the same hah.
Helmet is all sanded, going to form the lenses tomorrow, then paint later this week. It's an acme helmet (same mim sells) except I bought straight from the source, Clint

Rocketpack is going to be started next week, it's goIng to be scaled down 30%
Didn't want something huge for Halloween party's/nightclubs. Using 5" crab floats as the main tubes

Are you going to start a build thread? I'm stuck on the tops of the engines. I used photography lamps (spun aluminum), but when I cut them and put them in...they looked more like nipples than the tops of the rocket. Crab floats for the top will really help me I think.

yep im gonna start a build thread. ill post a link when i get my floats.
i wore my jacket today, and when i unbuttoned it, one of the buttons came out.... grr, damn cheap indian leather, oh well, im super gluing it back, it ripped the leather, but wont be able to tell when buttoned up

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/06/12 - HELMET OPINION!)

Yeah, I'm kinda scared to undo any buttons...lol. I'm just using it as a pull over for now until I get my harness built in.

So good to see another person do a full Rocketeer at the same time.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/06/12 - HELMET OPINION!)

looking good.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/06/12 - HELMET OPINION!)

Got my crab floats today!

Not going to use the full portion - I'm working on metal fuselages...just needed the crab float 'topper' I guess. These will be cut to fit, and riveted in place on Thursday.

Had to fill in the holes, sand them down, and gave a once over quickly. Will use Plastidip Spray as a final layer before my silver colouring.

I think I'm going to have to cut more into the stubbier one to make it more 'bullet-like' similar to the one on the left. The proportions don't look right.

Also, the caps and the little 'side nubs' (as I've called them) are going to be made of quick dry foam. Never used it, but hey, why not. It doesn't crack, and will get glued to the side of the fuselages with crazy glue.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/18/12)

Also important to note:

MIM got back to me a week and a bit after telling me they were going to redo my helmet. They told me that the artist will not take on the project, so they were willing to give me a refund.

I took the refund, bought a fresh Rocketeer Helmet kit, and am having it sent to GeneralFrosty for some kick ass craftsmanship.

In addition, I'm getting some help with the harness. A russian leather worker named "Vlad" (awesome) is helping me here in town. Custom leather harness is setting me back about $130.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/18/12)

Nice. Also, something to keep in mind for when you do the rocket engines, the hole
In the middle of the float is 1" (on mine anyway) so I am going to put a 1" PVC pipe in there to attach the engines to.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/18/12)

Very nice! :thumbsup

I too am working on my Rocketeer costume as well. Have most of the costume accessories (boots, pants, jacket, helmet) and working on my version of the rocket pack.

I'm actually doing the comic book version of the costume/rocket.

Rocketeer Rocket Pack WIP (Comic book version)/

Right on!!

I just re-read all the old comics. While I won't have the comic-style rocket pack, my girlfriend will be going as Betty - don't think anyone will really recognize here though. Will need to find something suitable for her to wear ;)

Will you be doing the more 'metal gauntlet' style?

Yes, I have one of the 'metal' (PVC piping) controllers cut and assembled. Need to post a pic of it.

Had to modify it some as if I made it as it looked in the comics, I'd probably snap my wrist! :lol

I had to make it a bit longer and asymetrical because how the hand is naturally shaped.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/18/12)

Finally back to working on the rocket. Feels good to be moving forward, but tonight it was one step back, two steps forward.

With the addition of the crab floats my buddy and I didn't quite measure the length of the fuselages correctly, so we had to chop a bit off the end. Not much of a backstep. Floats are riveted in using 1/8 inch rivets.

Sunday will be grinding out the bottom again, and slicing the vents. Also going to add the nub and more rivets plus hopefully add the top cone portion. Essentially just finish both fuselages.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/20/12)

Got the engines fixed! Wasn't happy with the originals that I had. They look much better. Just have to attached the tops and the cables I have. Lots of work done on Sunday, some setbacks, but almost on the center piece of the rocket. Then I just have to attach it all!

Looking good! I have plans to add smoke shooting from my rockets, I'll let you know if it works.

Re: Rocketeer Halloween Costume (Updated 09/20/12)

Smoke eh? ...

Now you're just pushing it! Hahaha. I've looked into battery operated smoke machines for another costume I want to do (headless horseman with the horse's nostrils flaring)......but they're pretty expensive. I'm interested in knowing your solution!! Are you adding lights?

There is a tutorial for how to have a smoking jetpack with a CO2 tank on the DentedHelmet. I've done it for my Fett jetpack and it works like a charm. However, I don't know if all the components would fit in a Rocketeer jetpack. You might want to check that out for some ideas.

yah i saw that one, seems too bulky.

here is my plan for mine, im going to get a can of this CITC FX - "Cool Stuff is Show Tuff!®" - Special Effects Equipment

then, using a trigger from a compressed air can
like this one

hook a plastic tube to the end of that nozzle, with a Y connector, and run tubing down each rocket. hopefully the fog will be able to travel in the hose. we will see friday when i pick a can up.

p.s. you wouldnt be interested in mailing me 1 package of beemans gum would you? :)
