rocket raccoon WIP

The finished head looks absolutely amazing! Very realistic, and the airbrushing really sets it off. Awesome work!!
Thank you so much!

I also can't wait to see the rest of the guardians. You're all going to look amazing.

Haha thanks. My husband is nervous about being drax due to the muscles. I'm nervous about being gamora because I got a little chubby from nursing school (10 months should be plenty of time to lose the weight lol) and I'll have to airbrush myself.

Thank you! I'm pretty excited, and so is he. The rest of my kids are getting excited too as I buy things for their costumes. I still have to sculpt lots of pieces like my other childs starlord mask, nebula's arm and facial pieces, ronans armour, the fin for Yondu, my husbands drax markings, my few facial prosthetics for gamora etc etc etc..thank goodness we set a goal for next year. haha

For Gamora, are you going to do the movie version? or the Earth 616 version?
I am trying to do a Earth 616 armour. Now I just need to find a place that will 3D print this stuff.

I love that version but I will be doing the movie versions. If I stumble on anything I will let you know!!

For the lower jaw it looks like after you cast it you cut out the lower half of the jaw and then built/sculpted additional side pieces to allow movement with a bolt connecting them. Is that correct or anywhere close? This type of project is so out of my skill set and seeing your progress is really motivating.

That is awesome! Your talent is amazing. So you airbrushed all the other colors on the face? How do you see through it? is there a mesh part to see through?

That's correct. First cut the side of each mouth and remove a small piece. Dont cut it out all the way to aid with keeping it lined up.
You make hinges and attach them to the mask. I scratched the surface and used a lock tight super glue material and apoxie sculpt. Because the angle was so extreme i had to make each side special to allow for movement. :) i added elastic so the mouth closes on its own on each side hidden on the inside. Make sure when you fur the mask you fur it open. :) here's a very bad set of drawings to aid :) lol. After the hinges are attached that's when I cut it. Fair warning, i had to redo them 3 times to get the angles right, I hadn't done it before..

Thank you! Yup. Airbrushed with dark brown , black and white. I did it in light coats and use a wire dog brush to brush it so it's still soft and has movement. He sees through the tear ducts, there are holes even with his eyes., i will be adding a black mesh see through material to cover the holes.

Thank you so much for all this info! And even more, taking the time for the drawing.

This is super awesome so far, I can't wait to see the whole thing done.

Thank you!!
By the way, so jealous of your walking dead photo. Lol we got to meet "merle" and "hershel" and take pics with them :)

No problem! Just wish I had more than my galaxy phone and a sketching app at the time. Haha

Thought I'd share some more of my progress. Your head sculpt and info has helped heaps and here's my creepy mangey looking head haha. I sculpted the lower jaw and tongue the other day. I sculpted just using Super Sculpey and Primo for the teeth and jaw, and Sculpey Mould Maker for the tongue, which sounds odd but it has elasticlay in it so it makes the sculpt slightly rubbery (I mixed it with a little Super Sculpey. It's really soft so can be a bit difficult to sculpt otherwise). I had it already too, and couldn't be bothered moulding and casting lol (I was working against the clock too).

I just love this community. Everyone is so helpful and awesome :D

Have you considered doing a sheer stocking top thing for Drax, to save time for the tattoos? I can imagine getting the family ready is going to take an all nighter! I so can't wait to see you all!! My group did a promo for Village cinemas on Sat and they looked awesome (we had a Groot, Gamora and Star Lord). I didn't get Rocket finished in time but I'll be joining them soon. I've seen the film 3 times now, and intently studying his costume haha. As well as screencapping the trailers. I have the artbook too, but it doesn't show Rocket's backpack, so I've had to make sketches from the trailer and the figures. If you want any ref pics let me know though. There is a great image of Rocket's blaster rifle too :)

Fantastic job!! Nice idea about the tongue! It is creepy at that stage huh? Lol. Any reference photos are great. I've been stealing screen shots from trailers and toys as well. Lol. As for drax, i may try that if my other idea fails. I thought about sculpting and casting by tinting by latex or silicone or whatever I use and leaving it in large sections so i can just glue it on and go. Unsure if it will work out but I hope. If not, now I have another way :) i do love the rpf. And keep up the great work!!!

I'm pretty sure your method for Drax is actually the method they used for the film. They have some detailed images in the artbook of the tattoos so i'll get pics of them and share them tomorrow :)

That would be brilliant! I'd love to do a gender-swapped Drax at some point in the future, and have been diligently collecting references. Pics of his knives would be awesome too.

Mudget, an easy way to get the taste buds texture on the top a tongue is to press the clay against a bath towel.
Then slightly fold the tongue down the center.

I used the same mold maker you did to make my Lizardman's tongue.
To get the redish color I marked my finger with a red marker and rubbed the red into the tongue.

lol, I wish Id have thought of the tongue for the tongue I made. I used an unclicked pen to make individual taste buds. lol. took forever. Mine was made out of liquid latex with pink mixed in

That looks great :) I studied reference images of raccoon tongues and taxidermy tongues and they don't actually have much texture, kinda like dog tongues. I didn't have heaps of time either so just went quick and simple. But great idea for future reference :) I just painted mine with acrylic and added a gloss (so it looks wet).

I'm a bit of a sad nerd because I actually really enjoyed studying the skull morphology when working on his teeth. I have a major in zoology and it was one of favourite topics. We never looked at raccoon skulls though so this was new! Is it weird too that I looked at images of raccoons with mange (and the hairless mutation) to see the face shape...lol
