rocket raccoon WIP

That looks great :) I studied reference images of raccoon tongues and taxidermy tongues and they don't actually have much texture, kinda like dog tongues. I didn't have heaps of time either so just went quick and simple. But great idea for future reference :) I just painted mine with acrylic and added a gloss (so it looks wet).

I'm a bit of a sad nerd because I actually really enjoyed studying the skull morphology when working on his teeth. I have a major in zoology and it was one of favourite topics. We never looked at raccoon skulls though so this was new! Is it weird too that I looked at images of raccoons with mange (and the hairless mutation) to see the face shape...lol

omg, i looked at the hairless one too! lol. I had to look at the director's dog, apparently the mouth was scanned of his dogs mouth, I couldn't figure out why rocket had such pointy teeth till I read that. I tried to get as close as possible too, though I had to shorten the teeth just a tad bit to get the mouth to close better. :) your mouth looks really nice :)

I love seeing everyones different costumes, so much talent on this site! Right now I'm working on his body padding. I still have to go back and add some mod podge to his teeth, tongue and nose to give it a nice little wet look. I also forgot to redrill the nose holes because it's a new nose, lol. So now I have that to do :( A quick retouch of paint will fix it :)

Wow! cborchardt82 that click pen is a good idea. Takes a lot of dedication. The eye for detail shows in your posted results.

Mudget it is rad that your field of study is helping you in your everyday life/ hobby. That is not often the case for me.

Not really helpful, but I've been following this person's art for a while and I thought you guys might appreciate it, given the current discussion!

Thanks :)

That explains why his nose is a canine nose and not a raccoon one too! I went for biological accuracy because I'm a nutter that way and did a raccoon nose. I actually made a comment on my facebook about how the artists gave him a dog nose instead and it bothered me lol! The dental formula of a canine is different to the raccoon too so I looked up a scientific paper to check it haha (if you're curious the raccoon is I3/3 I, C1/1, P4/4, M2/2 vs canine 3/3, 1/1, 4/4, 2/3. Yes I'm a nerd. Similar teeth since they have similar diets but obviously a different shaped skull). Wonder why they did that when they had Oreo to use? And especially when dogs have different shaped heads :/ It bothered me, since Rocket is still morphologically a raccoon, and I'm just fanatic about animal accuracy in films haha. Not that anyone would probably notice except those of us making him! But it does make things challenging for us!

Thank you sooo much! I love family cosplay :D As far as material, I haven't gotten alot of close up of the fabric, I decided to go with a thicker orange canvas. I had found some on ebay, it was thicker, but really soft because it was older, so the orange is faded in some spots which is nice for aging. I may try and redy it with orange though as some areas look pink to me. I think orange canvas is the way to go, polyester might work to, but I think it's harder to age it, unless you airbrush light spots or something. I hope this helps, Ill let you know if it works out for me!

That is amazing.

Thank you :) Im working on a friends zombie movie so I've been busy making prosthetics, but I hope to get cracking back on his costume. I started attaching more of his "muscles" to help shape him into a raccoon, so hopefully Ill get somewhere!

Thank you for the quick response. Its been driving me crazy for material. The polyster I been looking but the thickness and feel just didn't seem right. I'm going to use the canvas thanks ill follow and keep you posted. Last yr me n my gf did silent hill that was our 1st so we still new but really getting into this

No problem! I work night shift so I'm up :) ya, thats the problem I had too, plus the canvas just looks better. I looove silent hill, I can't convince my husband to play pyramid head, but maybe one day :) I want to make a nurse from SH to put in my front yard :)

This is an amazing build; you are exceptionally talented. Dedicated parents rock!

My sons are now 18 and 21 and they still remember all the hard work which went into their costumes when they were small. You never realize how much you are truly paying it forward when you accept such challenges for a child. Keep up the great work!

Alright, a little more progress. Looks funny because I'm in the middle of covering the green foam with extra fabric but adding padding to change his body a little. It will make more sense when I'm done. Lol
