Revell release schedule

I'm not familiar with how machines can make this sort of texture. I know that Tamiya and other manufacturers spend time making moulds that are almost perfect, right down to anti-skid textures, cast metal, and weld marks. Was this intentional to hide the tooling marks? Other revel kits are so smooth, you need to sand them down a bit so that paint will stick.

Can someone illuminate me on details of the finishing process or provide a link to a video?

Isn't that kind of texture the remnant of processes like EDM, as seen in this HLJ/Fine Molds behind the scenes video? I don't know a whole lot about tooling, but if the slight pebbly texture IS a result of these processes, then the tooling would have to undergo extensive polishing in order to achieve that desired, truly smooth surface. Just my guess...

Honestly not trying to apologize or pick a fight. I have no dog in this hunt. My decision on buying this kit vs. R2's will likely be based on other factors. I'm just curious about why the texture evokes such a negative reaction if, based on the build we've seen so far, it doesn't seem to be much of a factor. Is it a case of subpar standards (which Revell has been guilty of in many other Star Wars kits) or just a choice that could actually help a finish stick better to the plastic? I can see where having a texture on the plastic would be a huge deal on, say, a car or plane model, but this is a heavily weathered fantasy spaceship. I'm not a master painter, especially when it comes to replicating a metallic surface. Either the texture is a problem, or it isn't.

Well, I will say from experience that if the texture is as bad in the photos as it appears, it will be a problem for me personally. The Razor Crest is near chrome (but not quite) in it's unweathered state. Again, I don't have the kit in hand, but if the photos turn out to be an accurate representation, getting a chrome finish is going to take a lot of surface prep work. Work I'd rather not have to do.

Indeed the surface may aid in paint adhesion, but it doesn't have to be THAT extreme. Even some primers have a satin sheen, being fairly smooth, and that is enough for paint to grab onto. The likely explanation is that a smoother mold would have needed to be polished, and thus cost more money. Revell is just being cheap and delivering a substandard product.

That's kinda why I'm curious why people are concerned about the texture. It didn't seem to be a factor in that build, but maybe its a bigger issue with other types of chrome finishes that people use. What's the reason for the texture concern?
Even florymodels didn't think it would be an issue. Take it for what it is worth.

Fair enough. For me, whenever I've done a chrome finish, like on the Queen's starship or the Naboo fighter, I've used adhesive metal foil or Rub N' Buff. I've never used Alclad or the Testor's line of metallizer enamels. I'm trying to think ahead to how I'm going to approach the finish on whatever version of the kit I end up buying. I'll likely want a more mirror-like finish, which points me toward Alclad, but I'd be venturing into uncharted waters. Hence my curiosity at the texture debate.

Here's an enlarged shot.

There's is no acceptable excuse for texture this rough, it looks like sand paper.

Robn1's pic looks like what it might look like after a really thick orange peeled primer coat. Yeesh.

It definitely softens the details. I especially don't like what it does to the panel lines. It reminds me of the soft styrene Ertl Trek kits from the 90's. I'll definitely hold off until I see what R2 is offering.

So why is there a texture in the out of focus area on the right of this picture? Just look - no way an out of focus area should have a texture - makes me think this image is manipulated.
I see what you're talking about, looks like the whole image has a texture, something's odd here. I think it's from enlarging the image, makes the texture look worse.

Oh no! Revell is so bad they even put texture on the Bandai mini model! ;) In all seriousness, we need better photos and hands on reports from actual modelers. Until then, the kit still has pluses and minuses.

In addition to modeling, I'm also pretty heavily into photography. This looks like it was taken at high ISO which introduces a lot of noise, and was then also processed to increase contrast which is going to accentuate the noise. I also see a lot of other artifacts which look to be from overprocessing the image.

I’m sure this is answered elsewhere, but I can’t find it - is there a good source feed for where R2 are giving information about their updated schedule? I’m still leaning towards the R2 kit but if it’s now not going to be out until Feb or so I might pick up the Revell kit just for something to do…

Originally, the R2 Razor Crest was scheduled for december, which is almost over and there are no signs of the kit on the horizon. There aren't even some promo shots of the final kit or anything like that, yet alone a new release date.

Extra large detail shot from the real kit...
There is a fine texture - not the worst "texture" showed in the promotion picture - this is caused by a terrible paint job.

With the global shipping crisis, that threw the plans out the window. If in their last video, if it was a 3D print, then I'm sure they would have had a test shot by now. Perhaps the test shot didn't come out well enough to advertise.

You guys are surprised a Revell kit looks like hammered horse crap?
Not surprised, just disappointed, again. Whatever's going on in the photography there is a texture there, even in Flory's video. Revell of Germany is capable of much better than this, but they just don't care enough for sci-fi stuff to give it the same attention as planes or armor subjects.

Round 2's recent Trek and 1999 kits have been exceptional, I'm really eager to see what their SW stuff will offer.

The texture notwithstanding, the level of detail and accuracy on the kit is definitely a step up for Revell's SW kits. Seems on par with Kylo Ren's shuttle, which is an excellent kit in terms of detail (had they offered positionable wings, it would've been a complete home run). The kit isn't an assembled toy and, so far, it seems its flaws are manageable. I'm the first to wish it was Bandai making a 1/72 kit, but I've suffered through worse kits.
