Restoring the X-Wing Pyro master patterns and the Hero "repattern"

May I ask why the bottom left and top right guns look like they are pushed back further on the wings than the other two?

It’s just an optical illusion. The wings (and guns) are all instances of each other - there is just one wing model that has been mirrored and patterned around the armature.

Part 6 is here.

This post starts to get into the actual 1/12th up-detailing. The Cockpit was already up-detailed, of course, since it was based on the live-action sets - but now we were looking at how to add some yumminess to the big model's exterior bits. Enjoy!

Hi Jason or maruska: Would either of you have a problem with sharing how long your restored fuselage is, overall, from the tip of the nose cone to the rear?

It’s subjective, with the hero. Each nose was hand applied. My hero shell casting is long as hellllllll.

After reading the blog posts it seemed like you two had settled on one nose design. I had wondered what the measurement for that one was.

Or, do you happen to have the measurement for your hero shell casting?

Nice Work! You guys have been busy!
I wish I knew you were doing a new sculpt of an X-wing Pilot,
I have a 3D/Laser scan of a real APH-6B helmet... I had it scanned along with a "lineage" fuselage from Frank Cerney a few years back. (thanks Frank!)
...could have made good use of those helmet scans for this,

The Pilot looks great! Good attention to detail!
Was it sculpted in ZBrush?

I have real fuselage castings from 1976 - Pyro AND Hero, so it beats the Cerney by two to three generations and is ground zero! :)

Yes, Z Brush.

You're quite right; the shortcomings do to generational shrinkage/distortion became readily apparent when over-laid with the ILM 3D/CGI assets from the late 1990s ANH remake and also the Rouge One (2016) 3D/CGI X-wing meshes. (which differ significantly from each other as well)
The ILM team working on Rouge One really did their homework. I think as many of the 3D/CG artists are a younger generation, who grew-up with Star Wars; they had a greater reverence for the original 1976 miniatures. Also the attitude of the whole production was very mindful of how much scrutiny SW fans are capable.

Jason, ... I think your ZBrush sculpting skills have surpassed your already formidable "analog" sculpting abilities.
I'm glad to see you've' taken the plunge into 3D. --- welcome to the Dark-side! ...something ...something Dark side

Just read the thread from start to finish, that's some truly inspirational work from you all.

Caveat - the head sculpts are being commissioned by me from a very talented zbrush artist. I haven’t tackled zbrush yet, still deep in rhino
