Re: Red Skull costume progess
Looking awesome.
If you're using a resin for the buckles, I used a polyurethane resin then demoulded it once it has kicked bu not completely cured...I have a paint tin on it's side and a bag of kitchen salt, lay the buckle over while there's a little flex left in it, then weight it and leave it to harden.
A paint can! VERY nice tip! Thanks much! I am going to do a mold in the next couple days (hopefully) and can't wait to make some resin buckles. My scale, or logo, is not screen accurate, but might be a nice addition to someone's collection or jacket.
looks awesome, the cap really goes good with it.
Tom, you hit a homerun on this mask bro. AMAZING how well it fits me.
I don't remember if I posted here or not, but I am 6' 2", 230lbs with a melon head diameter of 22 3/4" (I think, might have to re-check my numbers).
I discovered a weird effect while wearing the mask. My lower lip gets curled over...really exposing my lower teeth. Everyone thought I was wearing dentures the illusion came off so nicely. My mouth is open 99% of the time anyway for breathing...I can breathe thru the nose a bit too...it's not like my nose is completely sealed off. Maybe it's my facial hair, or the exaggeration of the mask to hide the nose, but there is a small pocket of space between my upper lip and nose.
Also, I have pretty short hair. I do not wear a ski-mask or anything. Over the weekend's couple wearings, I found a hair would get in my mouth every once in a while :lol
I'd be able to isolate that annoying sucker and stick my tongue out (while wearing the mask) and yup, sure enough, one of my own hairs. :lol
Ohh, and heat. I was in the mask for 1 hour intervals. That was suit up time, performance time, undress time. I was outside, in bonafide direct sunlight for a good 30 minutes. Five minutes in the car both ways, then a few minutes indoors walking the rooms. Yea, I sweat...not to the degree of sweat pooling in the mask though. Seems, once it got wet, it just stayed wet. My hair did soak it up prolly. Despite an expected amount of sweat, it did NOT make me hot. If it wasn't for the heat of that jacket, I could easily troop for a couple hours, if not more.
Tom's Mask...the coat you got built...the eye detailing story...buckle, patches...One Truly Awesome Costume!!
As for heating up while wearing the coat, I'd suggest Under Armor- I wear it under my Clone armor, etc. and it's outstanding for helping keep you cooler. Especially in that Atlanta DCon weather!
Superb job, just superb! Love it all!
Thanks! I do wear under armor (at least, my idea of what you mean).
I have a two-piece compression suit. AMAZING how that stuff sucks the sweat off your body and keeps you cool. I wear it under my Vader and Iron Man suits....AMAZING stuff.
My problem however, is the coat design.
Since it is synthetic leather, it is really thin...and does not breathe.
There are two "belts" that go around my waist, and the fit is ideal..very snug, but comfortable. The neckline is completely sealed off due to the mask, and the collar I wear.
Once I am in the coat...my upper torso DOES NOT breathe at all. Dude, after being in the sun for 30 minutes, I'd swore I had a heating pad on medium pushing against my chest and back. I could FEEL the sweat rolling down my chest and back....with nowhere to go.
Once I got back to the hotel, took off the skirt thingie and opened the jacket....whoa...I was INSTANTLY freezing! I couldn't wait to get that cold shirt off and get some nice cotton against my skin.
After about ten minutes....that shirt had completely dried itself! Weird material that stuff is...but AWESOME.
I really would like to figure out a solution for the heat of the coat.
Maybe bust open the armpits...maybe cut some vents on the chest, right under the fold-over decoration piece...
But, the material is pretty thin...and picks up the HINT of anything foreign underneathe it. I am afraid of wearing anything like a cooling shirt (firemen wear it) that has tubes of water circulating thru it to keep core temps normal for two hours. I bet every hint of a shirt like that would be seen by the coat.
I might just have to contend with the coat, and do short troops.
It looks great!
I dont mean this the wrong way but its to bad it would cause so much trouble to add the Nazi band to the arm like in the early comics. Its like Darth Vader missing his lightsaber. The movie seems to be going the same direction. Again imagine there were none in Raiders just takes away from the total effect.
I feel the same way.
At small events, I could prolly get away with it.
Large events, or posting pics online, might just be too insensitive for some...but I think it would make the suit perfect.
