Weathering - Grail Diary

It's taken a while but finally I am ready to practice my weathering skills.

Before I actually apply these techniques to my Diary I wanted to perfect my skills on some test pages first. Here's one of those examples.

I’m using Potassium Permanganate and trying to emulate the techniques used by Keir Lusby. Generally, I am applying the solution in layers and waiting for it to dry in between applying. This allows the paper to dry inbetween coats and stops the different layers from bleeding too much.

First coat - is the base coat and is a very light solution.
Second coat - is a darker layer for areas that need just a little more shade and colour
Third coat - is the detail part of the process. Using a fine brush and applying the spots and other finer detail.

I'd be keen to hear how you all do your weathering and show some examples :TOH:

For paper weathering I usually rely on tea bags for overall colour and instant coffee crumbs on damp paper to replicate the foxing. I've never weathered with Potassium Permanganate before, I seem to remember from my school days is that it's purple? Does it go brown in solution?

Yes, its starts off as a purple then when it dries it goes brown. Makes it interesting to work with as you dont know the full effect until it has dried.

Watching this thread...

Picked up an El Cheapo diary off Wham-A-Zon and presume with deft weathering, it may pass...
The Amazon ones are mildly passable with a decent amount of work. I’ve seen some go as far as taking it completely apart and redoing the page order. But painting the cover, aging up the pages and strategically gluing in some inserts make it decent for photos.

Thank you for your comment :)

I am making a number of diaries with the intention to sell if there is people who would be interested.

The current one I'm working on is a mix of A prop and B prop. Compiling the best spreads and pages from both versions into the one diary. Kinda like a comprehensive version. Still has repeating pages like the A prop but every repetition is different in some way. Essentially it's still an A prop but I've managed to add the B prop spreads to the diary to make it a more complete diary.
