R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size

Re: R2D2 Build - 1/3 the size, but still cool (Update 3/6/12!!!)

Add me to that list of interested people if you produce a kit of this.

Looks awesome the force is strong with this little droid

:lol

Add me to that list of interested people if you produce a kit of this.

I will add you as well. We will be doing kits, my guess will be around mid summer. It will give us a chance to build a couple, and then offer up the parts for you guys. I will keep updating and keep all of you that are interested informed.

Thanks again

Re: R2D2 Build - 1/3 the size, but still cool (Update 3/6/12!!!)

I received my first batch of cast pieces this weekend from my dad. I had posted pictures above, but to have these in hand was great. My father is such an amazing craftsman, that each of these pieces came out perfect.

Obviously they need some touch up, but it is very very minor. Within the next couple weeks, i should have the rest of the parts in hand, and then he is going to start an experiment of casting the dome.

I hope to have one completely built soon, and then i can offer up parts to those of you that have asked for them.

Enjoy!

Re: R2D2 Build - 1/3 the size, but still cool (New cast Parts)

AWESOME work......I would make one of these in heartbeat if I had HALF of your skill!!

Re: R2D2 Build - 1/3 the size

As everyone else has already stated, this build is nothing short of incredible in my book and very inspiring. If you still have room on your list of people for your first run of parts, I would love to be added to it. Keep up the awesome work!

Re: R2D2 Build - 1/3 the size

Thank you Bryan, I will certainly add you to the list. I have had many requests for parts, and we will,do the best we can to offer to everyone that wants them.

This is a very special project for both my father and I, and the craftsmanship is nothing less than perfection, my dad has MAD SKILLS. But honestly we would not want to offer anything up to this group without it being perfect.

I am hoping to be offering pictures of completed builds and kits by mid to late summer. Thank you all for being patient, it will be worth the wait!

And also a big thank you to evryonee's kind words about the build, it is very much appreciated!!!

Re: R2D2 Build - 1/3 the size

WOW! Amazing build! Both you and your father are doing a fantastic job. And to think the project started as a joke/project and it's snowballed into a kit. The attention to detail is second to none. I am truly inspired.

Will you guys be offering a complete kit or just parts?

Either way... put me on the list as interested!

Dont stop now!

SK

first of all, thank you very much for the kind words.

As far as a kit, we are hoping to offer all the parts; foot pads, all the small parts, and hopefully a dome. The arms and body will be up to you all to build. Obviously there is care that we need to take that we are not infringing on any copyright laws and such. (We don't want uncle George upset with us)

The idea is for those of you that want a full droid to purchase some of the more difficult parts and build the rest yourself. We liked the idea of 1/3 size, as it takes up a lot less space than a 1:1 (and that keeps the wives and girlfriends happy)

We don't yet have pricing figured out, there have been some INSANE man hours involved; me standing at the door to my old mans garage with a bullwhip yelling, "GET BACK TO WORK", :lol But we do want to make it affordable for you guys, and not setting out to take advantage. We'll know soon enough.

Again thanks for the interest, and all the kind words!

Re: R2D2 Build - 1/3 the size

Castings are looking perfect. Your going to owe your Dad big time. ;) Never heard back about the dome build/casting, did you get that started yet?
And tell your Dad he's awesome and keep up the great work. :)

Thanks Clinton, and thanks for the advice on how to get going on this, you rock!

He hasn't started the dome process just yet. I sent him a gallon of Resin, and he was going to start on a complete pour of the project. To see just how much it will take to pour the entire parts list. The next step is the dome, he has several ideas on how to proceed, and when that man's brain start to work . . . STAND BACK!!!! :lol:lol:lol

and yes, i owe him more than you could ever know:eek

Re: R2D2 Build - Lots of Pics

Hi F,

Thank you again for the inspiration. I'm sure many of us are now tinkering with our own ideas! It was like my hesitation working with fiberglass - you just gotta jump in and do it.

I do have a few questions:

1) The body is a PVC sewer pipe, 12" diameter: Did you purchase at a local "Lowes" or Home Depot"?

2) The Dome is a restaurant cake lid, bought from a restaurant supply store for about $12: You wouldn't happen to remember which store? Are they online?

3) The eye pieces on the dome are composed of Windex bottle caps, and a plumbing fitting: Did you take any pics of the build process?

4) Finally, you mentioned the difficulty routing the PVC sewer pipe. Did you create the pattern and... how the heck did you route with such detail? I saw the "jig" (if that's the correct word) was it matter of going back a forth, changing the depth and bits and turning the body as you go?

Again - AMAZING! Can't wait to see our favorite lil astromech complete.

Re: R2D2 Build - just small enough to be cool

1. The size; We got the blueprints from the Yahoo Builders Group, which we found a link to on :: Astromech.net :: R2 Builders Club Official Website :: Once we had the blueprints, my dad scaled it to fit a 12" dome and body, roughly 1/3 the size of the original. This was achieved by, and get this, multiplying the original measurements by .666 One guy told my dad it was the droid from the Dark Side. :lol

You and your dad have done some incredible work here! As one that has built a 1:1 R2 replica, I really appreciate what you've done!! A minor note: Following the construction details and math you've provided, you have been building an astromech droid that is 2/3 the size of full-scale, not 1/3...

Looking forward to seeing more!

Marcus

okay, so in answer to your questions, i will do my best, remember, my dad is the brains behind this operation:love

1. Body: The body of this first droid, is made of a 12" diameter PVC sewer pipe. This had to be routed using the tool you see on page one, (my father can provide details on building this, if you use this method)

It id have to be routed using the jig, and it took about 8 hours to do so. Following that, there is a ton of clean up work to get it perfect. The sewer pipe was available for my dad, and it fit the size.

Now that being said, the next one i do will be made with styrene sheets that i have purchased from Regal Plastics. I can make a wood frame, and then lay the styrene sheets out, (2 layers) and then cut the patterns found on the Yahoo builder group website. ( I think this will be much easier, and the material is easier to locate. The price for the styrene i purchased only amounted to $28.00 I can provide a link for those interested)

2. The Dome: The dome is a bit more problematic. It was a restaurant style cake lid, running $12, but as it is from a restaurant supply store, local to my dad's home in Lubbock TX, its proven a bit unreliable.

The store does not have an online presence, and they only order the domes in bulk, so we would have to order several at once before we could get them. i have been unsuccessful finding these specific domes anywhere else on line. (which seems strange, but so far it has been tough)

now, the plan is to try our hand at casting this, which would include all the detail already set for you. Obviously this does raise the cost from $12 to what ever it may be with the cost of resin and a tad bit of labor. So if you can locate a 12" cake lid dome please share. In the mean time, if casting doesn't work for the dome, maybe we can get everyone interested together, and have this local store order a bunch at once.

3. Small eye pieces: these are composed of Windex bottle tops and a sink plumbing fixture. I did find out from my father, and checking Home Depot, that the silver sink fixture has changed, and the newer model is no longer the same:cry:cry:cry so we will be casting this piece, as it was near perfect, and now cannot find the part any longer (remember, this project has been on going for 3 1/2 years the product changes, and again :cry:cry:cry

4. the Jig: This thing is totally custom made, and once again, my father is a MAD MAN!! I can have him share with you, the design for this bad boy. The detail is achieved ver carefully:behave and like i said above, it takes forever. But i will get details, and if i can ever get him on the sight, he can explain in more detail.

I hope this helps, and I promise we will put together serious details on the build coming soon.

Marcus, thank you very much, i and my Father appreciate this kind of compliment, its nice to share this kind of build with those of you that know how much time and effort go into these builds. So thank you.

And yes, you are correct sir, 2/3 is right . . . i was never very good with math:behave:behave:behave:cry:cry:cry

Re: R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size, but still Awesome!!!

Add me to the list for sure I'm definitely interested in this! Great work
