R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size

Re: R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size: Star Wars Celebration VII pics!!!!

Hi Fuzzual,
My buddy Nick (Australian guy with a beard) and I actually shared a table with you guys one day at lunchtime.
Didn't even realize you were an RPFer! LOL.
Saw your stuff on display up in the R2 Builders Club room.

Really outstanding work!

I saw the parts on display in the R2 room and they look great! Seeing the finished ones and their leash, I realize now that you walked right in front of me down by the sand crawler display. Did you see the 31" high version JAKKS is coming out with? Might have to buy a few to mod for fun.

Thats awesome, wish we could have had a chance to meet. The leashes were a riot, cracked people up.

You got that right!!!

Re: R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size, (Nearly there!!!!)

Brand new to the forum and a huge Star Wars fan, so no doubt this has caught me interest. I've read through the whole thread and this build is stunning. I've always wanted to build a full size Artoo but the cost is just too high. I'm really interested in what you and your father have so painstakingly created here. So I'm asking for some guidance on your build and are these parts still available?

okay folks, we have lift off. I am finally getting a full box of parts for my droid, and we believe we have all the kinks worked out to provide a kit. The only parts the kit will not include at this point are:

1. Dome - We just have not been able to get the Dome cast as of yet, but i am sure in the coming months it will happen.

2. The Legs - The legs would require a large amount of resin, which just makes them to expensive, making them out of MDF is a much cheaper route, and it is fairly straight forward. We are happy to provide information for you guys that are going to make your own.

So that being said, there are a group of four of you that were first on the list for a run, and we are going to offer that this week. Then we will post in the Junk yard for everyone else. Getting very excited, thank you for looking, and those of you that have wanted your own, thank you for your patients!!!!

Oh man... I wish I had seen this thread before hitting up Celebration VII!
I probably walked right by them if they were in the R2 room and didn't even know it.

If you do a run, please add me to the interested party list!

thanks,
-Chris

edit: It's probably a moot point now that you have molds for the dome, but I'll just leave this here....

Re: R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size: Star Wars Celebration VII pics!!!!

hey man, awesome build! I thought I was starting something unique this year by doing an r2 with a 12" dome but obviously not and am thankful for it cause your thread has been crazy helpful. Am to the point where I was contemplating 3D printing some of the parts or what. Definitely not an easy scratch build. My thought was to build a smaller version for several reasons... A. In reality I don't think r2 would've been as big as he is if it wasn't for trying to stick someone in him to make him work. B. I wanted something a more manageable size and c. I have a voice command r2 that I want to try to use the parts from to make this autonomous. A full size version as an autonomous robot seems dangerous due to size and weight.
Will definitely keep this thread pinned for references. And quite possibly be contacting you if that's cool?
Thanks again for the awesome write up!

Absolutely my friend. Feel free to reach out and I will help in anyway I can. Also, we are doing a full parts run starting tonight, so if you are in need feel free to sign up.

Re: R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size: Star Wars Celebration VII pics!!!!

Hello all,

We have been asked on and off for several months when we are going to do a run of parts for this little guy. I am happy to say that a run has been posted.

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=251281

I also wanted to post several photos here of the actual parts. So even if you are not interested in purchasing one of the kits in our run, here is a breakdown of our work on this 2/3rd scale product thus far.

Re: R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size: Kit Parts Now Available

Hey man... sorry I haven't gotten back to you about the parts. I've made a list of stuff and believe it or not I actually ended up making a few things myself. I'm trying to put my all into it so I have something to be happy about doing. Nevertheless, I have gotten to the point where I've narrowed down what I don't think I can pull off doing vs. what I can. So I'll shoot that list over to you soon. Have also been researching a lot to make mine autonomous like I had said earlier to you. Crazy the things I've found and sadly very little from the astromach forum. Am going to line the bottom with distance sensors using the ez robot setup to control. Also, I'll be using that for the voice commands unless I get motivated and experimental to crack open my hasbro R2 and use his insides like my original plan. Thanks again... this thread is definitely an inspiration and I really do appreciate you getting back to me as quickly as you did!!

Sent you a pm in fb.

Re: R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size: Kit Parts Now Available

Magnificent work mate, I'll be in touch soon...
