QMX Malcolm Reynolds Metal-Plated Pistol Replica

I am hoping that some of the more egregious failures in quality are simply QC issues, not necessarily indicative of what to expect from the entire run.

Still. Guys. In all honestly, what were you expecting? It's a VERY low cost item. Has there ever been a hobby where the old saying "you get what you pay for" is more true??

On the other hand, there seems to be no shortage of folks who want top quality items at bargain basement prices. I don't know exactly when it was that this ideology started becoming commonplace, but man it always weirds me out when people expect everything for nothing.

Issue is Matt, the image shown and description do not fit the final product. In reality, this is considered false advertising and bait and switch tactics. For around the same price Sideshow statues made of the same material match the advertised item as shown. If it were advertised as the delivered products are being shown here there would be no excuse for complaint.
You do get what you pay for but your also expecting to get something along the lines as advertised and shown when dealing with a license holder.

Yeah Matt, I gotta agree with Rob on this one. Look at MR's Qui-gon CE. No warpage, no worries, just a great looking product. I'd considered buying this pistol but seeing the pic Rob posted where the sight doesn't even line up remotely close...no way, uh uh. That's not a small error you won't notice once it's on display or an inaccuracy only a pedantic fanboy would pick out. That's a HUGE "dear god what it that thing" kind of problem.

Almost every photo I've seen of the actual pistols being issued still have a flawed barrel at the very best. I'm almost certain to just do a return because I have no confidence that I'll receive a replacement that looks any better.

With that said, at this point I would be thrilled if QMx would simply return my e-mailed concerns. Every other time I've e-mailed or contacted them about something, I've had a response within hours. Not this time though. EDIT: Was contacted via FFPB by the QMx rep today.

I never expected the pistol to have a metallic touch to it, no matter how they had it worded. However, I did at least expect an item without fundamental errors like a comically erect barrel and globs of matter all over it. If I wanted that, I could have ordered a garage kit from somewhere else. These guys are supposed to be pros, so I expected a little better, no matter the price.

There's a difference in wanting a full metal replica for $80 and wanting the $80 replica to be free of major defects like a twisted or warped barrel, chips, etc. that are obvious defects that should never have happened.

I agree wholeheartely. I still haven't received mine, and if it looks even a tiny bit like that, it's going right back. Yeah we paid 80$, but damn. It's like ordering at McDonalds and getting a plate of mud. I wasn't expecting haute cuisine, but I still expected something edible.

I feel the same way, which is why I am going to return mine (the one in the photo posted by Rob) for a refund rather than a replacement. There are plenty of other cool 'verse props I could spend the $80 on, and I will.

I don't know Matt. I understand that outlook, but I also think it's too pessimistic. Phil charged about the same for his unfinished firefly pistol cast and that sucker was clean.

The first version that QMX did, which was all resin, I picked that up as well. I think it was twice as much as this version. Mine is very nice. Clean, no dings, or chips, or warps.

Everybody wants a bargain, sure. I don't think I agree that people expect everything for nothing.

If memory serves, wasn't the hero gun crooked? I'm not asking to excuse QMX's quality control issues, which seem to be plenty with this model.

The live fire hero guns were not crooked in either the film or the series. The inner barrel was offset on the original series, only the inner barrel, nothing to do with the exterior brass shell or hexagon barrel shroud. This was fixed when they were rebuilt for the film. None of the stunt castings were crooked either. As ive stated before, QMX was given a reworked and freshly painted pull from the damaged original mold (years after the film was completed) made for the film that was done before all alterations to the live fire guns were completed.

Ive no idea who or where this bent barrel talk comes from but those live fire guns were battle ready once rebuilt.

I'm somewhat satisfied with mine. Do I want better? Yeah, but for the price I can't complain too much. But Serenity's gun? There is NO EXCUSE for that kind of warping. That is just total crap that they would box that one up and expect people to pay for a gun that as built could shoot around corners.

Just got mine today, I dont have issues like others on the board, the only issue mine has is the warped barrel, it's perfectly straight, just alittle twisted, disappointed? eh', it looks great on display, feels good in the hand, 80 bucks cant complain, I just wish the finish was more "metal" looking, but overall satisfied.

:eek Man that's awful, even for $ 80.00! :eek

Heya,

I know some people mentioned having issues but I don't know if you've emailed customer service, so not sure what you may or may not have been updated.

If you have pistol issues, please email customer service so we can set up an RMA for a refund or replacement.

If you have a concern about a replacement having an issue, we are hand inspecting replacement pistols and we will cover shipping costs for pick up and shipment.

Bug we can't do any of that if we don't get an email with an order # to customerservice@quantummechanix.com

In short, yeah, we wanna fix it. We just need to know who needs fixing ;-)

As posted on FFPB:

QMx customer service contacted me today and sent a mailing label for a return... Look forward to getting this resolved. It's disappointing that this didn't turn out like I hoped, since I was looking forward to having it in my collection. I do hope that the problems will get worked out for others in the future though.

On a personal note, I'd like to say thank you to QMx GGD for your help thus far and for making this a bit easier!

Got my pistol today. All in all, not bad. There's a few funky things - but as we have said: it's an $80 prop :) If I want something closer to perfection, I have my SidKit.

OK, let's start with the bad:

One side of the "hammer" is oval-shaped, rather than round:

One thumbscrew is a bit "lazy"; in addition, the joints where both screws meet the body look like there was a small bit of glue seepage.

The grips aren't too bad; yeah, a bit oversize. The weird thing is that the recessed "screw heads" are at an angle. It's hard to see in the pic, but they "lean" in the hole:

That's the "big" things, and I'm being critical because of all the previous discussion on these points.

Now the good:

The barrel is straight and true, with no sign of a filled void as seen on others:

The finish feels like metal to me.

The prop cost $80, I wasn't expecting perfection. The minor flaws in the piece are that: minor. I'm quite happy with my purchase, and plan to keep and display it.

Overall, I guess I lucked out :).

I got mine today. It had a warped barrel, like so many others. I find it interesting that WarPig's pistol didn't have a warped barrel. I assumed it was just a bad mold and that they would all be this way. Can anyone else confirm that some of the pistols have straight barrels?

Hi Red,

Actually, lots of the barrels have been straight. After a closer inspection, it's most of them, tbh. ;-) I'm beginning to think the Universe just enjoys making sure the RPF sees more of the affected items than the general public.

In either case, as I mentioned earlier, please get in touch with customer service so we can take care of the issue for you. email is customerservice@quantummechanix.com.

Thanks!

Thanks QMx GGD for stepping in and speaking up despite the chance you may be treated as a emotional punching bag!

Im still waiting for mine, and have faith that the barrel is straight!

Will take pics when I get it!
