Padme's blaster project - ELG-3A - screenaccurate details and proportions - idealized metal and wood materials

No, I don't like it...I love it (y) (y)  :notworthy::notworthy: Your attention to details is commendable!! Eager to see the rest...

Seriously, these are absolute works of art. I really hope I'm able to get one.

oh! thank you you guys! really appreciate it :) it motivates me to work on it even harder :)
I cut a new batch of tubes today to start working on a bit more of them for the run :) don't worry, there won't be many but there won't be just the 8 I'm showing thus far :)

thank you again guys :)

Hello there,
Can't believe this is going to be one of the last updates! I still have a lot of work to do, especially on the run, but apart from a few updates on the handle and trigger, we are almost done here!

so, last operations on the lathe for the blaster, the front of the body,

first, I'm doing 3 facets, at 3, 6 and 12°:

then rounding a bit those facets with a round tool:

then, as usual, filing, sanding... :

a couple shots of what it looks like assembled, this is not final sanded or polished!

and where we currently stand with the run, as you can see, I cut a few more parts, this should be close to the final size of the limited run I guess, depends on the interest when the time comes to ask for it :)

cheers

Exceptional craftsmanship. Where's the interest/sign up thread?
thank you very much Skoota :)
the interest thread will be posted when i finish the 3 first production samples. then i'll take nice photos and ask for interest to make sure of the final run size.
I have to send the first blaster which is a special order in 7 days. So the interest thread will come short after normally :)

I kinda like the finish as-is, to be honest. The slight bushed look is very appealing.
thanks, it would be nice for a stunt :)
the unpolished finish + walnut grips would be a perfect rendition of this version:

But this blaster is probably pure shiny chrome in everyone's mind :)

I guess you could offer both options: smoothed or brushed. This way if someone prefers it without the mirror finish, hey, less work for you.

hey there,
here is a quick photo from today's work:

metal work is done on the 3 prototypes and they are ready for final sanding and polishing! Just the handles and trigger and overall assembly to do now before taking the photos and opening the interest list :)

but yeah, 7 days left and quite a bit left to do, so this will be a pretty busy week :)

Hello there,

I was having a small unforseen issue with the short barrel version. I planned to do the short barrel from a 12mm tube like the emiter end of the long barrel and thread it directly. However, the inside diameter was not small enough to accomodate the threading.

here is what I did at first in one piece, and wanted to thread:

In the end, I removed the small end and made a separate part, the same way I did the long barrel. this will be pressure fit the same way and it allows me to get the good orientation for the 4 vents as well. This was another problem. since the long and short barrel are changeable and thread, they need to stop at the right point and the vents oriented correctly. Fun stuff!

here are both barrel pressure fit together. No glue necessary in the end, it's a perfect fit. I turned the end a tiny little bit conical and it works perfectly. They are fit with a hammer in the good orientation and they shouldn't move ever again :)

and for fun, here are both types of blasters together, pretty cool to finally see them! I love the short version too and was anxious to see it together!

long version with Pao ferro and short version with Walnut here as this are the woods that represent both version the best in my opinion :)
cheers

Nice!

With the threaded barrels, I guess the barrel bottoms out on a shoulder or something, and does not rely solely on the thread?

I know it’s “just a prop” but you did the right thing to “clock” the assembly properly, provided the thread can’t continue to turn as the threads wear from use.

As far as the assembly goes, a light interference fit is really strong and can be helped by heating the outer bit and cooling the inner one. Reasonable temps will add/subtract 0.001 inch from each and then press it together (I avoid hammers for this sort of stuff because it may rotate). Once the temperature stabilizes, it’s never coming apart.

I did a record weight this way, with a brass center pressed into an aluminum disc. The Matetials shaved one another off during pressing, but it didn’t matter because I re-qualified all the surfaces after pressing. That was about 0.004 inch of interference, which is about the limit without having problems.

Looking good, almost there. Can't wait to see it fully polished. Are you going to apply any oil or varnish to the handle?

thanks Oliv :)
Handles will be hand rubbed with several coats of Tru-oil. they should look quite nice with this, I never used it before but I'm quite impressed with this product :)

To elaborate a bit more on that, here is a test I did with the prototype Walnut handle. I was a bit short on time and stressed out, so the handle is not even final sanded... but I love the result.

in the workshop (with a raw one for comparison each time):

then I polished it very slightly with a tiny bit of mother mag polish, It doesn't really change the shine, but it makes the oil look a bit smoother. however, I get a bit of white residue in the grain. So i'll have to see if I can find a soft brush to clean it of if I don't use polish in the end.

I'm looking forward to see the result on the Pao Ferro but I love it on the Walnut. Just so you know as well, Those two handles are the test piece with a very plain piece of my Walnut, the run handles in Walnut will be from an extremely nice piece (showed at the begining of the thread). This is probably 100 years old French Walnut. pretty awesome wood!
