Nylon Bullwhip tutorial-pic intense

Here you go...open top.

Just what I was looking for, thanks. Did you use the same variation on the TH knot for the one over the transition? Does it even matter there?

BTW, nice color scheme here. I may try something like that, perhaps with one white or light colored strand for guidance. I notice that there are six strands at the end of the thong. How big a whip is this?

Almost 10 ft. The transition is inside.
I dont really know if it makes a difference as that is the only way I have done it.

Bullwhipcracker,

I'm getting ready to start the core on an eight foot whip. I just have a couple of questions:

1) How does the length of the spike affect the handling of the whip? I was thinking that a longer handle would lead to a more powerful throw, maybe go to a ten or twelve inch spike...?

2) The chain loaded cord lengths are 2, three and four feet, if I recall correctly. Does the fourth core element, the strand filled length of cord, then go out to a lenght of eight feet, plus a little more for tying to the fall?

1. Australians always use a long handle...it makes the action much faster, and easier to crack.
2. Perfeck! but if your 8 ft strand runs short dont worry about it...not a big deal.

I have everything except the popper and the turkshead knots on now.

my wife thinks it looks like a snake and she won't go near it lol

The knots are gonna change the whole look!
Don't give up!

PS the camo is kind of neat...just dont drop it in the woods!

Ron, great tutorial!
What's the diameter of the paracord you are using?
I also have a somewhat hard time to translate some expressions to German:
Sinue - is that the stuff that's used for Tennis rackets, right?

Cheers,
Stefan

Diameter is 1/8" sorry no metric system here.
Artificial Sinew-
It is flat waxed thread designed to replace real sinew which is animal tendons.
It is used in traditional native american crafts.

If anything would be as easy as translating measurements ...
1/8" is about 3mm. That's a good thing to know as most of the stuff I found is 6mm (or 1/4").
As for the sinew - anything else it is used for? Would dental floss (the waxed nylon filament version) do the job?

Cheers,
Stefan

It should if it is strong enough...you have to wrap pretty tight, and you don't want it breaking. It is so thin it'll take a while.
Another alternative, fly fisherman use a waxed flat nylon thread that looks like a good match.
Anything will work, but flat is best because you dont want unnecessary bulk.

Ok, here's my first attempt at making a bullwhip...it's a 6 or maybe 7 foot whip...I was going for an 8-footer, but I accidently cut a bit of the cord short...that's what happens when I work on something like this at 3:00am. :rolleyes

Anyway, I used desert tan cord from Supply Captain...and I'm pretty happy with it, for my first one. It's a bit sloppy at the fall, but holds up nice and tight...had a tough time trying to get the Turnkshead knots right, and never could get the cord wrapped over the butt of the handle, so I just went around it and painted the end of the spike brown. I'll work on that before I start my next one.

The important thing is, it crasks GOOOOOOD......nice and loud....and I've been crackin' that thing so often that my arm is already killin' me.
So, my next one is going to be a nice chocolate brown and tan one....OR black and red...not sure just yet. And this time I'm shootin' for a 10-footer.

I'll try to get a video link on me crackin' it soon.

Yup, its the same camoflage cord.. it came out better than I had expected (both the look of the cord and the look of the whip.)
I added a cracker to it today. I found a link to a video over at Club Obi-Wan that showed how to make them so I followed the instructions and now it cracks like a shotgun.
Scares the wife and cat when I crack it :D.

my wife wanted to get a pic of me in my Indy gear (it's not finished yet)

Ramsey...Nice whip! Excellent job my friend!

Glad you like the tutorial...
About the you tube video...
The whip you made is a REAL whip. More so than 99% of what you see on ebay. I am a bit offended to imply otherwise. Nylon whips have in some competitions out done their hide brothers in both speed and accuracy.
Keep cracking,

Ron

I'm putting a video of me testing it in the kitchen on youtube.. I'll put the link on here once it finishes.
