Nylon Bullwhip tutorial-pic intense

Alright, I've ordered some paracord from Supply Captain today..should be here sometime this week.
Now, this may have already been asked and answered already, but I must have missed it..and if I didnt' miss it, then I may not have gotten it as math was never my strongest subject...but I'd appreciate it alot if someone out there could give me the approximate lengths the various cords should be cut for making an 8-foot whip. The 6-foot just seems to short, and I'm not sure I'm ready to try to handle a 10-footer just yet.:confused

I found paracord in the Wal-Mart sporting goods dept.. it was with the camping supplies. 50' for $1.50 my only complaint is that its a funky camoflage color. (edit) its not really a single solid color.. its a funky pattern.

I bought 4 and will probably buy more when I change the six footer to an 8.

I'll start my whip after I finish my Indy bag (full sized one, I recently made a kids size one) and my shirt.

Hey d_jedi1, would you happen to know the item # of that cord, or the Sku #(or what it says on the package) in case I still can't find it myself and the associate still doesn't know what I'm talking about :rolleyes...I don't mind the camo pattern..I'm planning to make an 8-footer, so I can use the camo cord for the core and first belly, and bury it under the tan cord I just ordered for the 2nd belly and final overlay. That would work out great, 'cause that'll save me from having to use too much of the tan cord on my first attempt, which more than likely will suck, and I'll have plenty left over to give it another try with.

Just a quick FYI...
I ran out of sinew, and the place was out of 35#. I got the 70#.
I actually prefer it! Just gotta be careful to lay it on thin.

And yeah, I see what you mean. Might make for a funky-lookin' whip, but hey..if it cracks it cracks.

I'm planning on getting some of that and using it just for the core and 1st belly of my 8-foot whip, saving the tan cord I ordered from Supply Captain for the 2nd belly and overlay (so if I do the overlay badly, at least the layer beneith it will still be the same color).

Again, I appreciate the help...now, if only I could find that stupid 8-inch spike! :rolleyes

If you have a Home Depot or Lowe's around you (and if you live near a Wal-Mart I'll make an assumption that you do) go to the hardware aisle and head down to where the nails are at. Take a look around and you should probably see some plastic bins with what look like gigantic nails in them; those are the spikes. The 8 inch spikes run about 48 cents at my Lowe's. Barring that, go to the hardware aisle and ask whoever's working there, they can probably direct you.

Yeah, I got my spike at Lowes for 48cents as well.. Funny story about the cashier (she tried to charge me for a whole box instead of just one).

I suppose you could also use the tent spikes that Wal-Mart has in sporting goods in a pinch ? (I mean.. I considered doing it.)
 
Ahhh, thank you very much! We DO have a Home Depot here, and the sad thing is I worked there for about a year and still didn't know I could find the spike there. But then, in my defense, I was only the "lot guy" there, so I wasn't inside all that much anyway. About all I knew to find inside was the break room.

So are you saying here that you make the 6-foot whip just as explained in the tutorial, only this entire whip becomes the core and two bellies for an 8-foot whip after a 16-plait overlay? In that case, when I make the final overlay, do they drop from 8 to 6 at the end of the fall of the 6-foot whip? (in which case two become the new core for the other 4 to wrap around until reaching the point where one is cut off and the longest becomes the new fall, right?)

(believe it or not, in real life I'm not usually this confused. )

Ok, let me see if I have this straight...follow the instructions to make the 6-foot whip, but use THESE measurements for the core strands instead of those listed in the 6-foot tutorial, right? What about the 4th strand..assuming that it's an 8-foot strand, left hollow, right?
Also, when wrapping the cords for the bellies, I assume the wrapping is the same style of plaiting, just going further down before dropping any strands?
One thing I'm still confused about is what to do with the fall ... is the fall for the 8-foot whip the same fall as would be for the 6-foot (extended to 8 rather than 6) or what? You can do it either way!
The whip in the pic used the shot core for a six. I just untied the fall hitch and made it an 8 footer.
If you are planning out an 8 footer, you can shot load 4-3-2, it is all a matter of preference. Also cut your core to 8 foot (a little longer is good) rather than use dropped strands. Tie the fall the same way you did on the 6 foot.

Found my spike..at Home Depot..and can ya believe it..it rang up at $0.01

Should have bought two or three more.
 
Hey, found that cord at my local Wal-Mart too...but guess what...a few packages behind the camo pattern packages were a few of white cords.:rolleyes
