Noob Captain America Shield (Steel Saucer)

amazing thats about 100 dollars of supplies, and you got a close to perfect shield out of it.

id say:
build a bunch
put them on ebay
???
Profit!

and marvel lawyers send a letter to him to stop selling un-licensed props...

take things slow, making one shield is great, do a few more and master it, then see if people are looking to buy.... i know a few things about making these and not drawing attention....

yep! Irish provides some wise words to follow. :)

Nicely done. I'm set to begin this project soon (have the saucer on order). I'm going to try to do a movie version with the saucer. Not sure how I'm going to handle the grooves yet.

Irish,

How do you suggest i get a good gloss coat on my shield? I sprayed it with aclear coat enamel and now its less glossy than it was before :(

The best gloss coat I know of is future floor wax, or floor wax powered by future.

You can brush it or spray it on, and it always looks as if its wet.

Spray enamal can be tricky stuff. Too close to your object and it gets milky, too far and it looks flat. I'm not sure what type you used, but most auto parts stores sell a duplicolor spray enamal that leaves a wet, glassy look after a few coats.

Thank you all for the advice. My heart sank at first when the gloss enamel made it more of a matte finish... then I thought it looked kinda cool...
but glossy is certainly what I want my finished product to be.

I will probably go out and purchase the duplicolor gloss and see how that works out.

Going out of town on monday and wont be back until the 19th. Should finish the product that week.

Its been a while. I was TDY for a week and had some other issues crop up.

I got my 2 aluminum spins in the mail yesterday and can't get over how beautiful they are...

I would like to finish these shield projects before I leave in Nov...

So look for more posts soon!!!

Looking forward to seeing the setup for your handle.

You heading to the "Box" in Nov or just another TDY?

Its pretty sweet. I need to add a gloss coat and throw straps on the back.

I just ordered an aluminum spin and need to save funds for that so the straps on this shield will probably be velcro ...or perhaps an old canteen belt from my gear?

We will see

Nice work.

You might try REI for the straps. I've purchased both 1 inch and 3/4 inch canvas staps (called webbing) cut to whatever length I've needed. They are like $1-2 per yard. I'd also try side close buckles ($1-2 for a pair of two) for the forearm strap, which will allow you to adjust quickly.

I know you are closer to Ogden, so the REI at 3285 E 3300 S in Salt Lake is your closest store. I'm in Lehi, so I usually hit the Sandy REI.

I'd love to see the finished product, so if you are amenable to a fan visit, I'll bring my two boys, 5 and 3 to see a real Cap shield... instead of the cheap plastic one I'm making them for Christmas this year.

Well done.

Hey Silverkage! ...and anyone else who care that this thread has gone innactive.

Sorry I haven't replied back. I have been overseas for the past 4 months and wont be back in town until mid May.

Hopefully I will get my 2 aluminum shields done quick and then your kids will have something really nice to look at. If you are still wanting to visit.

This shield has been wrapped up and cast into storage until I get home.
