Well on the V3 for the EL panel sole it is the wire between the two panel that can't take the fact you walk with, as soon as you'll bend it, as soon it will break after 1 or 2 days.And in many cases, it is not the EL. When I autopsied my pair (modded V2s), I found it was a wire that was rubbing between layers of cloth. The friction caused the insulation to wear away exposing the copper which shorted out. This is all due to the fact the feet move heaps inside the shoe when walking.
As much as I love the idea of light up shoes, it is really not a practical thing.
The LED panels on my daily pair are starting to die too but it's clearly the wiring that is the cause about it.
