Rumor Patrol: ‘Star Trek 2′ Bringing Back Old Villain (Not Khan) - Screen Rant

"Early word on ‘Star Trek 2′ is that it will NOT feature Khan as the villain and that the plot will revolve around a character from the original ‘Star Trek’ series.

Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman, and Robert Orci are currently hard at work on the screenplay for Star Trek 2 and have only dropped a few hints about the plot and/or villain that will appear in the sequel.

Now an informant who claims to have an inside scoop on the Star Trek followup is saying that the baddie of the pic is definitely not Khan Noonien Singh and that the film will revolve around a classic Star Trek character from the original series.

The Star Trek 2 script is still being developed, so, assuming that this information is accurate, things could change once the final draft has been completed. Khan has always been a long shot to appear in J.J. Abram’s sequel; his reboot went out of its way to change the classic Star Trek mythology and even included a short monologue from young Spock (Zachary Quinto) about how fate of the Enterprise’s crew was now, essentially, up in the air. To repeat history and have Khan appear in the second of the new Star Trek movies would seem like an odd move on Abram’s part.

A classic Star Trek character – one that appeared in the first season of Gene Roddenberry’s original Star Trek TV series, that is – is supposed to be the non-traditional antagonist in Star Trek 2, according to the insider. But who exactly?

Here’s their hint about the character that will be the focus of the Star Trek sequel:

“It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.”

For a rundown of who exactly these individuals are and how likely they are to appear in Star Trek 2, check out the source article on Badasss Digest.

Lindelof compared Star Trek 2 to The Dark Knight, but he and his fellow screenwriters have made it clear that the Star Trek followup will not be overly dark or dreary in tone. The sequel will certainly feature lots of action and humor, but it will hopefully also present Kirk and his crew with greater emotional and philosophical dilemmas than the reboot did.

The villains in the classic Star Trek TV show tended to force the crew of the Enterprise to make difficult decisions and resolve situations in a manner that tested their personal beliefs. If that’s the kind of adventure that Abrams has in mind for his sequel, then long-time Star Trek fans have yet another reason to be excited for the film.

Pre-production on Star Trek 2 begins in January 2011, so we should hear some definite information about the plot and villain in the near future."

I really appreciate the link DS, that is really interesting.

I am glad to hear Trek 2 is on the way.

I have mixed feelings. There are SOOO many outstanding TOS episodes, I am not sure why every film needs a villain.

Out of all those mentioned, Trelane has a way of bringing some excitement to the TNG crowd (as he could be explained to be a member of Q), and also brings a way for Abrams to bring back Vulcan if that was something he wanted to do. My second choice out of those listed would be the Talosians. There is a lot of ways such an encounter would allow for some emotional moments.

Man what I wouldn't do for a City on the Edge of Forever movie. Maybe set in our time ala Star Trek IV.:angel But that can come later (please don't throw any tomatoes at me).

All I need to hear about the next ST movie is that Simon Peggs not in it.
Loved him in Spaced
Loved him in Hot Fuzz and shaun.

but he was crap in the last Trek movie.

Harcourt Mudd could be interesting....

Harry Mudd .....No way, He is more of a goofy character that do petty theft things
Trelane.....Maybe, but his backstory in the Tos is very much like Q's and i can't see him as "evil". The Horta....Nope can't be evil because she only protected her young ones... Now Gary Mitchell is evil and could well be the evil dude But the Talosians do have a backstory with Captain Pike in TOS and that ended with him staying with them and that chick. So my money is on Talosian or Gary Mitchell.

I remember reading somewhere that Nathan Fillion (Serenity) is going to be in it as a villian. I could picture him playing Trelane.

Why do they need to pull a character from TOS? If this series is indeed a reboot why not chart their own course. Strange people these movie makers.

My bet is Gary Mitchell but don't know why he would be bad since in the new time-line the WNMHGB mission hasn't happened yet. So maybe he is going to be the TOS character in the thing; just not as the villain. Makes sense since they were friends since the academy days.

I would love to see more on the Talosians.

I'd like to see Gary 7 and Isis make an appearance somehow even though not technically a villain. There are so many minor villains they could go with though.

I'd love to see the Doomsday Machine, although I doubt they would do planet destroying things two movies in a row. I love the idea of the crew dealing with a force of nature instead of a villain.

I agree Mudd would make a good villian, since you can throw out most of what you know about him being a petty thief and turn him hard core, just like joker in the dark knight ( to use the storie's compairison)

give him more edge, better backstory and definately take out most of the comic relief and you have a good villian. one I'd like to see one.

Let's not forget that article is from October ... the script is only due this month, so we've still got a long way before any real confirmation is given.

I still think that Spock "Prime" should find a way to get Starfleet to assign him a starship and a crew that wouldn't ask too many questions. Not being from the universe in which he finds himself, Spock would feel little reason to maintain the timeline he remembered. He could track down the Botany Bay and blow it out of the sky, same for Nomad, the Doomsday machine, the giant amoeba, you name it.

STAR TREK IS BACK!....oh, wait. No it's not.

I hope you're saying that at face value because what you're describing is flat out murder against a group of people who haven't done anything. And what they did do in "Space Seed" hardly warrants the death penalty. Remember, Khan is not really a bad person. He just wanted to create world that would accept his rule when Earth did not. During his trial when Kirk decides to fulfill that wish, he says this line with great satisfaction.

Khan: "And I've gotten something else that I wanted. A world to win, an empire to build."

That trial scene showed a real sense of understanding between Kirk and Khan where there was absolutely no grudges between the two men. Both of them got what they want and there were no ills between them. So why would you want to just flat out murder them when they're reasonable?

You see, this is the kind of thought process that bugs the heck out of me. Folks don't look at the type of person Khan was, they just label him as "The villain" who needs to be destroyed in order to make everything better. I like to ask different questions like what would have happened if Khan and his followers were put elsewhere? Would Khan's empire become an ally to the Federation, neutral force, or an enemy? I don't believe they would fight the Federation given the circumstances that Kirk didn't punish Khan and actually gave him and his people the chance to create a new world. Why not explore the potential that Spock spoke of without the Wrath?

Spock: "It would be interesting, captain, to return to that world in a hundred years and to learn what crop has sprung from the seed you planted today."

Now, I love The Wrath of Khan and will always regard it as one of the most important Star Trek stories even today, but I'd be lying if I wasn't disappointed when the potential of Khan's future empire was gone as a result. It was a pretty awesome setup.

Remember, Khan is not really a bad person.

He was a villain, and a sociopath, and a murderer.

"He tortured those people. But none of those people would tell him anything. He went wild. He slit their throats."
