New Zvezda Star Destroyer Model kit

Looked over the unboxing video again. I'm wondering if it might be an idea to take an exacto or scribing tool to some areas, like the turbo laser bases for example. There is for sure more of this kit than I expected molded as a single piece.

I've had a good up-close look at the original ILM model. The panel lines are mostly pencil. The color variations are just random squares sprayed, I would assume, through a template. There was really no weathering on the model at all. I agree there's room for adding thin styrene strips and other surface details here and there, but I plan to do most of my detailing using paint and pencil. If it was good enough for ILM...

Yep. If you want to add really tiny panel lines, use a Copic Multiliner Marker. The tip is VERY fine. I use it on my models. If it's too dark, just lightly mist the base color back over it to reduce the contrast to be more subtle.

Yeah, I know it's mostly mechanical pencil for the hull panels, and we'll see if it's even necessary after a light wash over the existing panel lines, but what was on my mind was more trying to create the illusion of separate pieces for things like the TL's by engraving around the areas where, on the filming model, one part meets another, but on the Zvezda they've been molded as a single piece, and where, for ease of de-molding, they've eliminated some undercuts.

when you can wait till april 2017 then you can buy it from revell for 90€: 06052 Imperial Star Destroyer „40 Years of Star Wars“, 1:2670

I don't like waiting.

I wonder who on here will be the first to get thiers? Mine shipped on the 7th. As soon as it arrives whatever is on the bench is getting moved off.

Except what's the shipping from Revell to various points around the globe? I paid $80 USD plus $40 shipping, which I think is going to work out just about the same as the Revell price by the time all is said and done. (shrug).

Revell germany does not ship overseas.
The revells price is 89€ - it will be cheaper in online shops, i.E. the ex finemolds 1/72 millennium falcon price from revell is 349€ - available in some online shops for 249-270€.

Gotcha. I definitely noticed the lack of undercuts on the hangar bays, but those I plan to modify anyway. I'm sure once we have this thing in our hands, and we start comparing it to the original, there are going to be tons of things to tweak and improve. It's just that we're starting from a WAAAAAAAAY better base than with previous kits.

Yeah, but I haven't been able to find pencils with tips this fine.

There's actually a number of 0.3mm pencils out there. This is one of my favorites:

https://www.amazon.com/Pentel-Automatic-Drafting-Accents-PG1013E/dp/B005GSL762/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481678443&sr=8-1&keywords=pentel+0.3mm+pencil

Edit: My bad... I misread that as 0.3mm instead of 0.03mm. Even so, non-mechanical pencils can be chiseled to a needle point. You'd just probably need to reshape the point after each line.

I fall back on an old drafting technique (from the olden days when plans were still drawn on paper) where I rotate (or is it spin) the pencil as I draw the line. The point stays narrow longer and can get through at least a dozen lines before reshaping.
