Like many, I've ended up here trying to find info on whether a certain piece of decor from a classic movie could be bought. Turns out they don't sell it and never did, so I'm making my own. Until that project is done, I thought I'd post some of the bits and pieces I've picked up via my friends' prop shop.
I'm a screenwriter, have written jokes for Jack FM, and I've worked post production in reality TV.
But through the late 90s/early oughts I worked intermittently at a couple iterations of friends' prop shops. Mostly when they needed a lot of bodies on something. We made hand props for Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Babylon 5. They made the weapons for Van Helsing, the armor and helmets for Starship Troopers (All 500 sets.) They made scanners, guns and even sculpted some futuristic vehicle add-ons for The Sixth Day. They made the eye scanners, badges and the giant car-factory gimballs for Minority Report. One random all-nighter led to me being on the set of The Island, helping deal with the Geoff Darrow style surgery bay that Clone Michael Clarke Duncan wakes in and flees from.
Once we aged a huge stack of fake money for NUMBERS. (Fake movie money is specifically regulated. It looks right from 4 feet away, when you're holding it in your hand it's covered in 'this is not money' disclaimers. You can only buy it in clean bundles, so if you want it to look old and used you have to weather it yourself. Which we did using the washing machine full of poker chips method from To Live And Die in LA)
Another time they made a thicket of fake pot plants for Numbers. They made a functional moon buggy for an HBO miniseries. They rigged up game show sets for Nickelodeon. You could find all kinds of stuff just lying around. Star facecasts. The golden idol from the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I almost don't know where to start... they let me use the machines on my own to do costume work. I got pretty good with a lot of build techniques, but I still don't hold a candle to my friends' accomplishments and stories from the prop realm. I look forward to sharing what I have.
