Hello! I'm Mike and I'm a filmmaker from Rhode Island. I've been a lurker for a very long time as I'm not normally one to participate a whole lot, but I wanted to introduce myself none-the-less. Reading about and seeing the projects that you guys work on is great fun and inspiring. You truly are a talented bunch!

Hi All, I'm mid way through my first ever pepakura build. It's an Iron Man helmet and thought I should put up a build log in case it inspires someone else to give it a go. A little bit of critical feedback and advice would be good too.

Hello all! I'm from Sydney, Australia, and I have had an itch to get into crafting my own costumes for years and years now, but not known where to start. I've had a defeatest attitude for a long time, believing that because I live in Australia that I am cut off from this prop and costume creating culture. I have never put any effort into actually STARTING a project - I'd say to myself that I'm daydreaming and that it's too hard to access materials and crafting goods for making anything in this country. But perhaps I'm not looking hard enough? I don't know where to begin.

So I want to take the first steps into costume creating, and I feel that this website and the wealth of forum topics and posts will be an invaluable asset in helping me start on my first ever costume. I'm planning to debut at PAX Melb 2014 - I'm locking in a date for myself so I can't back out! I hope I find other Australian artists here and hope they don't mind if I... stalk them? Ha. I want to know how to craft costumes!
I don't know of any prop/costume/cosplay crafting communities here in Australia, but I'm betting I'll find some here on this site. (at least, I'm hoping!)

I'm excited to start browsing the site. So many talented people on this site, it feels a little embarrassing to not know where I should begin. But dang it, I am going to start right now.

Aloha all new members and welcome to The RPF..

Great to see another Aussie on board.. You'll be surprised how many Aussies are on the boards.. Majority of them, are great prop and costume builders.. I, myself, am not one of these people.. :lol :( :cry Even though I've been around for a few years, I still have no clue about pep files etc, to make costumes.. My advice ... just read up on everything you can.. There are a lot of great tutorials etc, on the boards.. And a lot of great members that will help you out when needed.. Using the search tool, to find exactly what you'd like to know is my other advice.. Now go ... make us proud!!

Hi!

I've been lurking here for quite a while, after doing research for my first "real" costume....

I've always been crafty. As a kid, I was fascinated with masks, horror, and gore. I had a subscription to Gorezone magazine(thanks, nana). I was a bit like a female Tommy Jarvis from Friday the 13th:The Final Chapter. It probably made me seem like a weirdo, a 10 year old girl in her bedroom attempting to sculpt wounds and scars, making herself look as disgusting as possible as often as possible, but fortunately my family was (and is) awesome and my parents never discouraged me. I learned to sew and make my own clothes in high school. I always had friends who were interested in art and in making things. In college, our professors encouraged us to take up a craft like knitting, needlepoint, or crochet to build manual dexterity (I'm a dental hygienist).I learned as much as I could so that I would be able to make (or at least attempt to make) anything. I even gleaned knowledge of molds, casting, etc from my Dental Bio-Materials class (when they demonstrated how dental labs invest-cast- in gold, I was imagining making a giant, gleaming C3PO).

Costuming and prop-making just became a natural extension of all of that. An expression of love for the things (and characters) I love, using ALL THE CRAFTS. Sewing, molding, etc. Knowing a bit about some crafts and a lot about others has served me well so far.

Doing my research for my first "real" costume brought me here. I thought I would start with a relatively "easy" and "recognizable" costume- Princess Leia in her Endor Battle gear. I quickly discovered that there's no such thing as "easy" when it comes to costumes! I made her poncho with no pattern, just draping a dress form with fabric, pinning, sewing, cutting, repeat. The thing I imagined would be easiest ("it's pretty much just a rectangle with a hood, right?") ended up taking a week! I also struggled with her hairstyle. I have very short hair myself, and having to style a wig with very long, heavy hair was a nightmare. It was all worth it when I was done and put it on for the first time. Having done so much research into the character made me love Leia even more than I already did, and I now FELT LIKE her. I was ready to take on the Empire! Unfortunately most of the people I know IRL only knew her from her ANH costume, and had zero idea who I was supposed to be. I didn't care. I love making the costume and wearing it, and getting into the headspace of a character I grew up admiring. I was definitely hooked on costuming.

I'm now planning two costumes concurrently- Marvel Girl (I needed a break from the sculpting and designing of all Leia's accessories and her weapon) and Shadow Weaver (my first real attempt to drape and mold foam over a wire amature- but NO WIG and I can wear my glasses under that hood!). I'm psyched to be here and I feel like I'm learning so much just reading everyone's posts. I don't know what I'll be able to add to the conversation but I'm happy to be here just to express awe at all the amazing things everyone is creating.

Hey everyone! I'm April, huge comic fan mostly marvel but batman keeps me rooting for DC still. I'm huge into gaming and so my first attempt at making costumes was the female isaac clark. I spent forever on the helmet not so much on the costume itself. I'm not going to say I'm ashamed of it but I will say I will improve from it and get better.

I'm currently working on a neon vi costume. Starting fists first so as not to be discouraged by the sewing part. I'm still pretty new to making my own costumes but I really hope to get better and keep doing it for awhile.

Right now I work in retail as well as fo to college so progress is really slow and tedious.

Thanks for having me :)

Hello everyone, My name is Arya Johnson, I am kinda new to the costuming world. I have made a steam punk outfit, and as my first pepakura project I have assembled a complete set of Halo armor. The next project I would like to take on is making a set of the Jedi armor from the Nights of the Old Republic. I will be looking for tips and tricks that will help me make the a spectacular project:)

Hello All,

I was pointed to this forum by The Real Tony Stark while searching for the coolest Ironman Cosplay. I'm in search of a legit builder of wearable Ironman suit. I haven't had much luck and sadly shafted by a couple of individuals.
This forum seems like a community of like minded individuals that could perhaps recommend someone legitimate that could build that suit as time and skill to do it myself , proves to be very difficult.
Does anyone recommend or know who has built real life size durable Ironman suit? I'm new so I hope asking that question doesn't constitute breaking of RPF terms.

Hey I'm Jake. I'm a huge fanboy of all things comics, scifi, and horror. I've been building things and tinkering for years. Also I've sculpted and played with clay most of my life, but just RECENTLY (like within the last few weeks) gotten into replica prop making. I'm currently working on my first detail oriented replica; a X-Wing. I'm currently a broke student so I'm building the main body our of corrugated cardboard and detailing it with clay (at least that's the plan so far). In any case, I'm really excited to be a part of this community and looking forward to any advice and critiques.

Hi all,

I'm primarily a tabletop miniatures gamer, heavily involved in Warmachine & Hordes, who also loves all sorts of sci fi and fantasy movies and related memorabilia. I bought a Rubies Vader costume for Halloween and now I have the bug to build a proper ROTJ Vader. I signed up at the 501st SLD forum and some others to do research and find reputable, quality vendors.

Hello !
I've been checking this site out for about 2 months ever since I did a spider-man cosplay. After seeing everything on here I want to definitely make a much better spiderman cosplay for future conventions :)

I'm in a similar boat. I am a rebel legion member and I'm looking to make a 501st costume along with upgrading my existing costume and see if i can find a reputable vendor to do my clone wars general plo koon soft parts and the soft parts to a ROTJ Emperor Palpatine as well. does any one here have previous experience with either of those costumes? I did see a picture of a plo koon mask with the soft parts in a convention. it was darth serberus plo koon wip.

Hello,
My name is Ed and I just joined, after lurking on the forums doing research for a Han Solo Blaster Replica. I live in Texas and test helicopter engines for a living. Before that I worked in a turbo repair shop building custom turbochargers for some very fast import and domestic cars. While all this was going on, I also served in the Air National Guard long enough to retire in 2012. Yeah, I'm old. My primary interest thus far has been doing the research for a replica of Han Solo's Blaster from the Star Wars movies, but in checking out the forum, I think I might be interested in a few other builds.

I'm huge SciFi and Comic Book Geek. My Anime "Kung Fu" is weak, but I still like dusting off the old classics once in awhile. Basically if it was anything that could be mocked, or ridiculed by the cool people in High School, I probably had an interest in it. I helped found a Radio Control Car Club in my High School for crying out loud, if that says anything.

I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and I learned enough working in the machine shop when I built turbos, to be kind of dangerous with a lathe, mill and other instruments of mechanical maiming.

So, that's it for now. Nice to be here, and hope to learn new stuff and maybe contribute a bit.

Hi all. I'm Maya and a fan of several different fandoms. I am currently putting together Mass Effect Femshep from ME2. I have also put together Darth Traya and I'm in the process of putting together Bo Katan, both for membership for the 501st.

This forum has been a huge help in my costume builds, so I thought I would put down my progress and hope it might help others!

So I feel like I did a disservice to The RPF and myself by posting an introduction in a non-rap style introduction. So I just came up with this in the shower. This should give everyone a better idea of who I am lol

Yo, this is J to the V-R comin’ at you
Cuz I’m such a nerdy kid I got games in queue
You gotta love them fiction movies cuz they legit
Star Wars, Lord A Da Rings, and Tron’s my ****
Better get this boy a table n a bag a dice
I’m a DM with a heart so cold it’s like a land of ice

Stop…

Cuz I got a gem with a bunch of different sides to it
Every time I roll you better be ready for a critical hit
I’m all about the costumes and the props n stuff
I’ll be peppin’ so hard my glue gun has had enough
Cuttin’ and pastin’ cuz my cuttin’ mat likes it rough
So skilled with a razor that my fingers is tough

I’m so full of sarcasm that it’s out of your league
But these are all the things that make me me
So you better be ready for a new kid in town
Cuz I came to The RPF and I’m ready to get down

JVR OUT!
