re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hello. I'm known as Pennsylvania Jones on IndyLounge. I had to shorten it to Penn Jones here because "Pennsylvania" wouldn't fit in the box.

As you could tell from my username, I'm a fan of Indiana Jones. I'm a huge fan of Indy's Gear (Raiders being my goal) and John William's scores for the films.

As you could tell from my avatar, I'm also a fan of Lost in Space. I'm a huge fan of the Robot (The Rebuilt Movie Robot being my favorite) and Bruce Broughton's score for the film.

Long time casual observer joining in officially.

Been costuming for ages, but only recently have I really dove into hard pieces. I've been working in resin and the like for just under a year now, and have mostly been working on small bits and pieces. Hoping to start branching into larger things as I start my second year working in this sort of thing.

I'm a child of the late eighties/early nineties, so I grew up on things like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and Alien. I'm also a big nerd when it comes to video games and comic books. Hoping soon to begin work on my first urethane cowl and I'll certainly be posting progress and picking brains.

Beyond that, I'm a biology student by trade I suppose, hoping to work in the zoo system, I'm trained in falconry and wildlife handling and I am a massive van of Vultures. I'm blissfully married to a fellow nerd, run a small prop/jewelry making blog and attend Dragon*Con in my current home state of Georgia.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

After posting a few things, I figured it's time that I do this.
And say "Hey"
I'm Rus Lake, born & bred in north central Kentucky, The Bluegrass.
While I love movies, and all the neat items in them, and would love to have them for my own, I would much prefer to have such things to more reflect my own tastes.
In other words, I want my own stuff.
Down through the years (and they've been a few), I've redone/re-visualized things from movies. Case in point, the upper newel of the Wicked Witch of the West. (I've a pic, somewhere, in a box), using a Wyvern.
Not that I would move from her castle even now.
Yet now, I want to do a re-do her hour glass with swans - it's the whole "Lake" thing.
With my other work, I've precious little time or inclination to do much, but there is some.

Hello, my Name is Jake, currently in the US Navy. I went to dragon con 2010 last year, and it was my first time. Needless to say, it blew my mind, and totally changed all of my preconceptions on what cosplay was. While in search of how to make the amazing things I had seen, I eventually found the 405th, and then this site. As I hate halo, I decided that I would be much happier here, and I want to do FOAM! Myself and 2 friends are doing Mass effect cosplay this year, and this seems like the way to go. Wish me luck! I've done a significant amount of googling, and Im sure I will do more. But I am in the middle of the ocean with really bad internet connectivity. So is there any chance that there is a Foam specific starter thread that explains the difference between different types of EVA foams, open/closed cell, different paint and how well they work, that kind of thing would be MUCH appreciated. Although I'm sure I will find it eventually. Once I become adroit at foaming, I will do my damndest to make an "all encompassing" guide to starter foaming.

Hi guys, new member here, but longtime fan of everyone's work.

I'm primarily a Trek guy, worked for Paramount for over 12 years, but on the business side here in NY. My late brother and I amassed a very large collection, and I have recently graviated towards the props side of collecting and building.

All emails are welcome and I'm gong to post my first thread about the Cage Communicator.

New to both The RPF and the whole Prop-Making scene.
I plan on building multiple costumes using Fallout as a focal point.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hi guys, my name is Conor im from Northern Ireland. i joined up to RPF cuz of the huge amount of talented people on here, im addicted to looking at all the pictures and watching the progress from others completing there final prop.

I have never made props before, but i am very interested in the idea, so i guess a good start is joining here on RPF for lots and lots of advice and help.

My idea is to start a captain America costume for halloween this year, i really want it to look really good not a half assed job of it, so from now i have plenty of time to get started lol.

Any ideas of how i could start would be great, thanks guys :]

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

What a coincidence that I happen to post right after someone else in Ireland :D

School and exams will all be over in 4 weeks so I get to jump right into the deep end and start work on my Assassins creed costume!

The other props I have in my sights are
"The Aperture Science Hand-held Portal Device"
11th doctors sonic screwdriver
Thomas of "Daft Punk" 's Helmet

Just being on this site is inspiring!

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

I have lurked around these forums for quite some time -its time for me to be "official" now. I am in Utah, love all things sci-fi and fantasy. I haven't done much with props but I really enjoy it -just trying to keep the cost level down as much as possible. I hope to learn much and hopefully contribute where I can.

Hi everybody

I'm a designer/modelmaker/tinkerer/cheesemaker based in Wellington, New Zealand.

I haven't done a lot of creative stuff recently as I spent far too much time playing mmorpgs rather than organising the mess in my garage. I'm a cheesemaker "by trade", meaning it pays the bills but studied Industrial Design, then worked in display design and plastic fabrication for 16 years. I owned a business in that field for 8 years, so if you have any questions about forming, or fabricating acrylic (Plexiglas/Perspex) let me know!

After selling the business a (fortunately a few months before the global recession hit) I ended up working for Fonterra making cheese, which pays really well, but is not at all creative.

Recently I've begun longing to get back to making things. Furniture, guns, toys, models, I have so many concepts, but am very bad at following through with them, unless they are a paid job.

I've attached a pic of the last paid job I did. I wasn't entirely happy with the outcome, the gun needed to be dirtied down a bit and was a little too shiny but it felt good on the whole.

I'm especially passionate about Steampunk particularly working with found items, I'd love to be able to make a living from tinkering!

This project was interesting, the concept was the client's but the design was mine. I based it on this style of fire alarm box:

600firealarm.jpg

I wasn't really setup to make this at the time, as I was working out of my carport, but the box was timber. Stupidly I used some oak I had lying around, thinking it would be easier to prepare for painting that MDF. But while the endgrain was nice and tight, the wood was difficult to get perfect and took quite a bit of 2Dprimer to get it smooth.

The gun was a cheap plastic BB gun I bought off Trademe (New Zealand's EBAY). I have to hack off a few bits to make it look more like an authentic shotgun.

The cartridges were green to begin with (and used) I closed them back up and sprayed them red. The bandolier was originally a belt, but didn't fit the proportions of the case, so I cut it down and imagined that it would be useful to have your amo strapped to your upper arm, in case of zombie attack.

Ohai!

I'm Mark, and I'm from Denmark. Unfortunately I don't have the kind of skill displayed in here, though I wish I did. I'm mainly here to get my hands on an awesome The Mask mask. :love

And I see a lot of other stuff in here I'd love to get my hands on. If only I had the room. :rolleyes

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Just wanted to introduce myself.Sci Fan from way back.Of recent Firefly and the current update of Space1999 to Space2099.

My brush with a Sci Fi legend:
I was about 16 when I had a brief encounter, and I mean brief encounter with Forrest J Ackerman. I was at the Bonaventure hotel at a sci fi convention in the summer of 1977.Dressed as Luke Sky Walker, with a home made costume that kept falling apart.Especially the leggings I created out of a type of elastic wrapping that I got from that fabric store on Wilshire near CBS.It was the fabric store Bob Mackie used to make Carol Burnett's outfits at the time.Cost me a fortune them leggings material did, they did.Any how back to the story,I was attending a Christopher Lee panel that had ended and noticed non other then Forry Ackerman sitting in my same row.My heart was pounding.I worked up enough courage to ask him a question and all I could think of was."Um er do you know were the original Robbie the Robot is located?I already knew the answer to my question,I had read it in the last issue of StarLog magazine, but could not think of anything more to say.He kind of gave me a "get away kid your drawing flys" kind of expression, then gave me a short answer.Still didn't deter me.He was the man in my book.

Huge Logan's Run fan as a kid.The books then the movie. And after 36 years was able to finally purchase a working DS prop gun. That's the heart of my collection.Really enjoy firing that fella.

I really admire the work people put into all the props and costumes both for movies and fans reproducing them.I have made up my mind to make my own storm trooper armor and will start on that process toward the end of the year.Once my bills are paid.As they say the "its in the journey, not the destination".

Anyhow that's a little about me and how I feel about Sci Fi.Look forward to reading more articles about costume and prop creations and interaction with others on the message boards.
