I've wandered through here a few times over the last few year. And as You lot just keep coming up when I'm looking for some obscure corner of geekdom to supply me with ref images for projects, I figure why not stop window shopping and network with folks.
I'm a Roving Jack of many a trade, and while I've a fondness for sci-fi and fantasy designs, it's usually because I like them as points of departure from which to create something for myself. I also have some grand notions of creating things that actually work or are the real world equivalent of an object.
For example a few years back I hand made some wands, based on the ideas from Ollivanders in the Harry Potter universe. So I gathered some oak and poplar wood materials, and cut each blank on the night of the lunar eclipse, working on them only at sun rise and sun set for one lunar month (until the next full moon). Into the handle of each was a tiny cavity into which I put tiny bits of certified meteor fragments before stopping up the end with a tight friction fit pug of the same wood the wand was made of. I then made labyrinth designs into the handles with wood burning, and finished them with a bit of oil and wax from plant sources.
I like the challenge of trying to make the real world equivalent of something.
Though my life's a bit of a turmoil of late and my chances for making anything substantial are pretty slim. I need income from a job again soon, likely a new car, and a new apartment before years end. While dealing with medical issues.
But I can still dream up projects and work on sketches for designs.
