Looks like it extends over the inner lip, almost the to edge of the tube body, which Roy’s CAD work also points toward.

Well if the color promo picture of Luke’s ANH lightsaber prop clip shows a blueish tint then most likely it was aluminum and not galvanized steel.

Maybe Roy can do a prototype one made from aluminum and another from galvanized steel to see which matches but it seems to be aluminum. See what Roy thinks to do.

Do Roy's overlays show that the d-ring clip on the toe pic saber is the same shape/size as the single hole d-rings we've previously been using and not the smaller d-ring shape/size of the Elstree saber, however people are now wanting the older style d-ring shape/size but instead of a single rivet hole they are wanting the double-rivet-hole configuration?

Yes.

To elaborate a bit: Roy's findings are that the ring portion is the same on both the Toe Pic and Elstree sabers. The clip portions, which hold the ring on, are not.

So, there's something else here that I noticed that might not be terribly important:

This image was posted a few pages back, and I notice that the two (apparently smooth Folmer-style pins) look almost to be bent in the same manner. Does it look to anyone else that the pins aren't parallel, and the pin closest to the S-curve end is bent downward, toward the glass eye, in BOTH images?

Does anyone else see this?

I don't know how reasonable it would be that the Elstree top could be the original hero top? The clamp and bottom don't seem to match, but how likely is it that the top is the same one? Does the timeline work out at all?

I'm pretty sure those are marks from where the flash reflector clips in. I'd have to double-check my real ones but I believe lots of flashes have marks and marring in the same general area. They don't look to be in exactly the same spot on both, to my eye.

Yikes—that’s a lot of clams to see shelled out for a hilt that has been torched and squeezed in vice, with most of its parts stripped off, and no verification that it ever saw screen time.

Still, I’ll bet you end up being right in your prediction Halliwax.

I see that too. Good eye. They look bent in same way. But could be that something standard on these kind of graflexes?

And Jm419. About the timeline. Andy Mitchell found and took the saber after he watched the film in the dubbing theathre or in the crew screening, becasue he recognized it, as he had seen the movie, before the reléase (as he says in the documentary). That had to be about march or april or may 1977. Weeks before the release. The filming in elstree wrapped in july 1976. So this saber was around in the studio almost a whole year before Mitchell took it.
