New 10th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote

How many gestures do the sonic remotes have? 12?

Again, assuming the sensors can detect these easily-

Push forward
Pull backwards
Sharp up
Sharp down
Pull left
Pull right
Tilt left
Tilt right
Tilt forward ( may not allow line of sight)
Tilt backward ( may not allow line of sight)

Which may be enough to be getting on with. Not sure if left and right tap are doable.

I love that this has turned into an R&D thread, YEARS in advance of anything possibly happening :lol

...classic RPF.

FYI 90% alcohol will remove the lacquer and paint from the grip of a 10th sonic.... I'm in the process of repainting the grip on mine.

Well, if the Doctor can take 400 years to calculate the disintegration of a door.....:)

Just getting a head start.

BUT.....keep in mind that the remote needs a IR LED to send a signal. Where would that possibly go on a 4th Doctor's sonic? There is nothing on it that lights up and to put it anywhere would automatically make it not screen accurate. So, let's discuss the River Song again, shall we? Or the War Doctors sonic?

Maybe you should just sell them as kits to save time (no need to disassemble) :lol:lol:lol

Cool idea but it wouldn't be accurate to the classic sonics, right? Since the WD sonic is a modified toy, I assume it wasn't a very good reproduction of the 4th sonic. Though im no expert and may be wrong.
though I agree, that would be awesomme.

Oh yes, I can see I really started something there! Clearly fuelling a debate that will run for a while here at The Wand Co. We have our own thoughts, but don't bank on anything just yet, we have a lot on our plate and I was just kicking round a few ideas. It just seemed to me that there is no point trying to do a replica and force fit it into be being a remote control if it really couldn't be made to work sensibly. I guess it could have much reduced functions, but then we have to understand whether that would be interesting to customers or not.

As I see it, then, it seems the main problems (for potential future replicas) are: Gesture recognition difficulty for vertical sonics and the lack of LED or button on 3rd/4th sonics, right?
That leaves us with two obvious horizontal sonics with a light on the end: River's and the Second Doctor's. Given that the 2nd Doc's is hardly known (apart from low-res telesnaps and one good view in the War Games) and is also a fairly plain tube (except when it's a whistle, but that's a long story)... River's sonic (again) seems to be the answer.
That is, until some bright spark solves the orientation problem and also finds a way to hide the IR LED without ruining the look.

Well technically an IR emitter doesn't have to light up. The light up bit on the tenth and eleventh is really only there because the real ones have them. But think about the fact that none of our television remotes have IR emitters that light up.

As far as placement, it could go where the screw goes in to hold the "magnet" to the emitter bullet. It would be simple enough to hide it in there.

Never argue with a beautiful lady. You're right. I was wrong! :lol

River's Sonic also doesn't need to extend, so that could be advantageous for it.

Inside the bullet would definitely work for a 3rd or 4th Doctor's sonic, easier to hide in the 4th's with the longer 'magnet' end of the bullet - and if I'm not mistaken, that's the end that is arguably used more often during functionality. The 8th Doctor's, not so much, as the bullet is smooth on the flat end where the other two have a recess.

The challenge, aside from the gestures in vertical orientation, would be hiding it enough to not spoil the look but also not so deep into the 'magnet' that it interferes with sending and receiving a clear signal. From the looks of it, the other two sonic remotes have 180 degrees of clear sending/receiving area from the tip of the IR LED. I've had my 10th sonic almost vertical and still gotten it to work with the TV B Gone function. But with the LED embedded into the 'magnet', it could limit the range to anywhere from 60-90 degrees depending on how deep is enough to hide it well, and that's if the proper end of the emitter is facing the device dead on.

Long and short of it, River Song's would be the best candidate, as even a proper laser screwdriver would have the same issue, minus the vertical orientation, with the LED's being recessed a few mm from the opening of each extension of the emitter head.

While we're at it, is anyone else entertaining the idea of a vortex manipulator universal remote? :lol Although I jest, the functionality would not be limited to one button and motions, but have a wide range of usable buttons.

Between the 'd-pad' on the left side and the three large buttons along the top, menu navigation would be a cinch (could even have the center of the 4-way pad be a click for enter, and the button just above and to the right could be to switch between banks to channel/volume control, etc. And the possibilities in FX mode...don't get me started.

Well guys, sometime next spring or fall (depending on your source) we'll probably have an entirely new sonic to beg for that might be ideal for a remote.

I hope we DO get a new sonic. I never had a problem with 10 using 9's sonic but 11 made it so uniquely his own that I can't imagine Capaldi using it.

I just realised, when it comes to sonics use by women, we're all forgetting Amy's sonic probe! :D
Mind you, that's even uglier than River's sonic so I'm not sure how many would want one.

You know what we have NOT had a decent replica of? The 6th Doctor's sonic lance! That's all plastic with a big red emitter on the end....it would be the easiest thing to make and all of us Whovian completests would snap it up!
