New 10th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote

I may do a small run of conversion parts for anyone looking to do an Eccleston conversion on this sonic after they hit the market and I can dissect the production model.

Can't say until I take it apart. If the electronics are too thick on the bottom end to fit a more accurate (for the Eccleston version) aluminum connector piece (the part that goes between the crackle body and the end cap) I'll probably just draw up a wide slider Eccleston style body and put it in Shapeways and people can order it in nylon or stainless steel. If I can figure a way out to substitute a thinner aluminum connector onto the sonic, I'll probably machine some aluminum replacement bodies. But all this depends on what the sonic actually looks like (internal and construction wise) when they start shipping.

Hmmmm.
Due to the button glowiing when charging, I'd guess that it would be connected to the circuit board, and it would be hard to modify it into a glowing version of the aztec unibutton.

I only posted because members asked me to , as did you NMR , and if people ask, I will show and tell how I build, unlike others ! - I've been building and restoring film and TV Sci-Fi hero props for over 40 years and whilst , I can't really model much these days , I'm teaching another member here , and I continue to share knowledge, as I do get great enjoyment out of doing so .

I certainly did, and I say again that you did a beautiful conversion. It is simply considered bad manners to post all over everyone else`s threads in order to advertise yours.

I will be watching that closely.

I'm afraid the final crackle finish isn't quite done yet... I should have something in my hands next week, though, and if we're happy with how it looks then I'll definitely share a photo on here.

Here are a few quick photos of the crackle finish moulded into the ABS main body, as promised:

Moulded crackle pattern (1).jpgMoulded crackle pattern (2).jpgMoulded crackle pattern (4).jpg

Chris is away at the moment but he'll take some better pictures when he's back later this week.

Having spent so much time with the prototypes painted by Nick Robatto, the moulded crackle pattern looks a little odd at first, but the overall effect is actually much closer to the Sonic we borrowed from David Tennant than the prototypes were. Of course, this is largely because it's the same crackle pattern, which is rather more dense than the painted prototypes. Please ignore the slightly ragged edge of the aluminium collar part where it meets the front of the main body - this aluminium part has been pushed onto and levered off from a few different bodies so it's been damaged in that area.

As you can see, there's a bit of inconsistency in the paint that's been wiped into the cracks, and the clear coat varnish is perhaps a tad too glossy, but we've now completely run out of time for further changes so this is what the product will look like. I was worried about the longitudinal parting lines where the four sections of the mould tool meet up, but as you can see, they're not a big problem - you can see them if you look closely but they are nowhere near as noticeable as on the CO toy.

Talking of running out of time, I'm afraid that we're going to have to delay the launch in the US by a few days - we had hoped to get the initial stock delivered to ThinkGeek and BBC America Shop in time for them to ship out the pre-orders around Tuesday 15th October, but it now looks like they'll be shipping out to customers on Monday 21st - sorry about that.

Cheers,

Richard

This sonic is absolutely incredible. I really do not have words to express how impressed I am with all you guys have been able to accomplish with this. Don'tworry about a delayed U.S. release. We Americans are quite used to looking enviously across the pond as Brits get the best Who stuff first. That is the price of independence I suppose. No, but really, thank you for being so informative, take the time time you needto do it right, and most iimportantlyTAKE MY MONEY!

Bravo! A round of applause is most certainly necessary- it is a beautiful product, and after wondering how close the moulded crackle would resemble the CO toy compared to the prop, it most certainly comes down on the side of the prop. The pattern being an exact copy of Tennant's crackle is just the icing on the cake. Really well done, excellent.

Just for reference, though there is a hold up for the US, is that hold up replicated for us Brits? What's the estimated arrival date for our pre-ordered sonics?

This sonic is absolutely incredible.
Looks great!
WOW!!!! I am amazed how perfect you were able to transfer that crack pattern!!!

Crikey - thanks so much for all the enthusiasm!

At the moment we're not expecting any delay to the UK shipments - our retailers here (Firebox, Forbidden Planet and BBC Shop) should hopefully be shipping out their pre-orders in the week of 7th October. We were hoping to launch simultaneously in the UK and US but I'm afraid it hasn't been possible this time.

Just to add one more round of applause. The body on that looks better than the one on my MFX sonic. That has a painted metal body, but the finish on mine is not crackle, but rather small tears instead. Huge tears on one side, and small tears on the other with no consistency. I really don't mind ABS for the body at all, as long as all of the unpainted metal is metal, I'm cool.

The extra wait, while a bummer, is in no way a deal breaker!

One thing, the teeth on the neck/head connector seem to have the correct angle to them, rather than the 90 degree cuts we saw earlier. Has this been fixed, or this a prototype head?

Either way, my credit cards stands at the ready!

Thanks again for all your support - we really do appreciate it.

All the parts you see in those photos are the final production parts, but the angle on the teeth hasn't changed - it's still the same as it was in the prototypes (so it's not actually correct).

cracking job (or should that be crackling job) and at 70 quid its going to be impossible to beat can't wait to get my hands on one and as for the U.S delay well its about time us Brits got the scoop on something :D

This is absolutely incredible! I, like some others, was curious how the molded crackle would look, but you guys really hit it out of the park! It looks gorgeous and I am definitely going to be buying at least one of these when they come out...and may not have to put together a 10th Doctor's costume just to go with my new sonic.

Richard, thanks to you and all of TWC for being so awesome, especially for all of your efforts here to be open and upfront with us...considering we're not always the easiest group to get along with when it comes to matters of accuracy, I think the recent pictures and the response to them speak for themselves. You guys should be hugely proud of the product that you're putting out. It might not have every feature that everyone could ever want, but it looks the part, and is actually coming out! As a group used to vaporware and missed deadlines, that last part is huge.

Bravo! Can't wait to get my hands on one of these.

-Nick

So I have been accused of being a bit thick so bear with me. Are you saying that the picture of the sonic, head body and all is the final production, that what we see there (angle of the teeth on the neck connector, etc.) is what it will look like when it hits my mailbox?

If so, then WIN...WIN.....WIN! Looks fine to me!

I am confidant that I could show that to 100 people and 30 of them would believe me if I said it was off of the set. 60 of them would say it looks exactly like the prop. 8 of them would say it is awesome and only 2 of them would point out any 'inaccuracies' it may have, but even they will be insane with jealously that I have one and they don't.....yet!

I do know that you have said you are going to look at non Who stuff next, and I will buy it even of I don't want it just to support you guys. (Unless it is any Harry Potter or inspired by stuff, I am so not into that.....Sorry)

I will buy whatever you make....River Song sonic....just to help support you......River Song sonic.....in all that you do........River Song sonic.......and what you make.......River Song sonic........so that you can keep making.......River Song sonic.....cool stuff!

Yes, those photos are what it will look like when you receive the product. The only difference is that in the first of those three photos, the button actuator is sitting a bit too low - this is because there weren't any electronics inside that assembly, so the button actuator (which is a transparent light pipe that normally rests on top of the button on the PCB) had dropped down a bit.

Was there a subliminal message in there somewhere? I must have missed it...
