N7 Helmet from Mass Effect build WIP

Re: N7 Helmet build (was Teaser of a Build. Guess it and win one.)

This is great, now there's a full range of Mass Effect stuff on the RPF now.

lol, serves me right for not checking the boards more often,.. I knew what part it was right away.

Looking great so far!

A bit of an update and I even decided to use grey primer instead of my regular black to show some detail better. I'm cruising right along now, the lego molds have been taking some of my spare time, but I'm getting back to this.

I have the forms pretty much blocked in now. I've learned from sculpting that you get the form first then get to detail, so now that the shapes are pretty much there and the edges are pretty crisp, I'll fill any remaining pinholes and mistakes and I'll move on to scribing the panel lines and drilling the screw holes.

I've been watching Volpin's M8 pretty closely and He inadvertently helped me solve a problem I was having. I was having trouble making the recessed areas have a smooth bottom, and in Volpin's pictures he was carving the panel lines farther to get good corners and filling the unwanted areas, so it dawned on me to do the same. I am now cutting the recesses all the way through and placing a panel of styrene on the back to get the "bottom" cleanly formed. The picture might help explain better than I did.

So next steps are finish the breather/face-shield and the little extra pieces connecting the chin to the jaw. I'm going to cut pieces of styrene or sintra, neither of which I have right now, so I'll have to make a trip to my local sign shop. Then scribing the panel lines.

I've made a mold of some security screws (actually I made the original as well because I couldn't justify the price for just a few of them.) I saw them on the Avatar sidearm thread here on the RPF. I've always loved the look of unusual fasteners and I've never seen these used in real life so I thought they would look good recessed.

I love making gang molds that just sit on my bench and anytime I have left over resin, I get a batch of cool bits and bobs.

thanks for looking

Love the updates. I've never played the game, but I think that helmet is badass.

wow this is a very beautiful helmet! I love the crisp lines, I just started a pep helmet along with my suit, but If you do get some cast done and are willing I may want one.

oh hell ive just found this ....loving the progress on this. I have wondered if the pepakura model was right or not.

I have wondered if the pepakura model was right or not.

So I was looking around at Google images of "mass effect helmet" and I have noticed some differencec between the ME1 and ME2 shepard helmets, (it seems the blue suns and eclipse mercs have the old, ME1 style of helmet)
the couple of differences are in the jaw area and the top of the head, the differences are not drastic but I have been comparing any Pepakuras to the ME1 style of helmet. Now my opinion on this is that there are issues with both Skips and 405th member Deadalus Thorns versions, but I am now realizing the latter is based on ME2 shepard's helmet. Until I finish this one, which I started before ME2 was released, I don't want to put more research into the other style of helmet to see how good it really is, but from first glance the 405th's looks way more like ME2 than SKP's.

I will hopefully have some time tonight to work on the jaw chin area as I'm booked for the whole weekend.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, It always inspires you when you know your heading in the right direction.
