My Tron Legacy Costume Attempt

I have a question about the fabric. I already bought a very thin (2mm) wetsuit that I'm planning on using for the base layer (underneath the armor). Do you think it would be better to ditch the wetsuit and go with a full spandex suit? Or do you think it would be better to buy some fabric and adhere it to the wetsuit in the negative space (areas that are exposed under the armor).

I'm thinking that the wetsuit will give the suit more structural rigidity, and be able to hold foam armor better. Whereas a spandex suit might hold form fitting molded rubber (like in the movie), but wouldn't stand up well with foam costume armor?

What do you guy's think?

I'm on a budget myself for my Quorra costume, so I'm planning to use the hex fabric only on the exposed areas where it shows through instead of making an entire undershirt. That way I am using (and buying) much less fabric. That also means, of course, mine won't be 100% accurate but it will be pretty darn close. I think it comes down to what costume you're doing. It seems like the male costumes almost require the full body suit underneath, but I'm sure it can be done to some extent with just having the hex fabric under the "windows". That said, it's a lot easier to get away with that technique on the Quorra costume as opposed to Sam's for example. Hope this helps ... somewhat!
 
That's awesome, thanks for the reply. It would be a lot cheaper to NOT make an entire suit when I could just cover the exposed wetsuit under the armor pieces.

I'm just worried that the wetsuit will be too stiff, and too hot to wear for a long period of time. And wrapping certain sections with another layer of hex fabric, plus the layer of armor is going to be crazy.

But on the other hand, a thin spandex suit will not be rigid enough to make the base layer out of.... so I'll probably end up using the wetsuit for authenticity, and just suck it up ;)
 
Can't wait to see progress on this SI! Looks great so far, and it's nice to see a working sample on Annisse's costume!
Definitely count me in for a suit.

I have created a duct tape form... used a T-shirt and a TON of duct tape.. also help from a friend.

IT came out REALLY WELL!!!!!!!!!!! from my experience.. I took a garbage bag and pushed it into the inside of the form, then i filled the plastic bag with various materials to fill the form. MAKE SURE you don't use things in there that can cause bulges. the form is fairly easy to mold so you don't want to ruin the shape. To battle this, after you tape off the bottom, take the form and coat it in a sealer, preferably something that hardens. I used liquid latex.

Amazing work on the costume so far soul! i've been following you for a while, planning my own costume. I just ordered one of your disk kits and i cant wait to get started, your fabric design interests me as well.

im a little late to this convo and i looked it over and may have missed it but what size is your hexagon paturn and is it the same size as the film or did you eye ball the size off of pictures either way it looks amazing
 
I think wetsuits (especially if you can find them discounted) will be the best way to go for some people. I found an all black one with little circles (instead of hexes). I'm working on a budget.

In this forum, I have read posts saying that the actual TRON suit material is neoprene and others saying it is spandex.

Which is it?

the armor is high density foam, like neoprene, and the part underneath with the hex print (body suit) is the spandex/lycra part you are referring to.
 
Raised Hexagon Pattern

Greetings,

Looking at TRON Legacy, it looks to me that when the spandex is not stretched out, the hexagon printed has texture. It is thick and raised and shiny. See the picture below.

Soulinertia's prints are not like this. They are flat.

Can someone point be in the direction of where I can get the pattern printed on thick and shiny?

the hexagons are not raised thay are flat and thay just stretch when the body moves and you can get them shiney by having the hexagons silk screened in a metalic color like how thay did the bricks for the black spiderman movie costume

what they did was make a silk screen of every costume section laid it over the spandex and screened them on in a metalic black so if their is a metalic gray you can get that effect

the hardesr part is getting teh hexagons the correct size as per the pictures i see both from the film and fan costumes i cant tell if thay are .5 inch wide or 1/4 inch wide so if any one knows what size thay really are and even bettr still the proper gap between them that is how to get the best start

Trying to understand this sentence. Are you saying the hexagons are metallic black or metallic gray?
 
sorry with the spiderman thay die-sub printed the black costume and had silk screens made of the bricking and used metalic black ink thats what gave the bricks that shine and the webs and spiders were coted in graphite powder to make them shine

now for the hexagons on the tron suits it can be done the same way just make a silk screen hexagon paturn and get a metalic gray or really any metalic color you want it to be and will achive that shine when light hits it like you see in the movie and photos

if you look at how Soulinertia nade his spandex you can either silk screen the metalic color right over that if you can get it to lay exactly perfect over each hexagon but the best way is to get plain black spandex and silk screen the gray hexagons over it that way you wont have any flaws

i hope that made a little more sense being a costume designor and working with costumes that are die-sub printed and silk screened some times i forget that this is a new process to some people and i forget to explain things a little more

by the way guys all these costumes are amazing i cant wait for the film to come out on dvd so i can start making the foam latex armore :)
