My Iron Man FOAM build (Mark IV)

That would require me to buy a copy of Windows, wouldnt it? I don't do torrents or downloads without paying for stuff, so buying a whole OS just for some pep files is not in my budget. I don't think i'd use windows for anything else.

Yeah, you are right. I was lucky to get Windows 7 from a friend who had a site license, but did not have a PC to put it on...free but legal.

I've ordered a gallon of flexbond. i'll be experimenting on scrap pieces of foam before i commit to painting on the suit.

The plan is to put down a coat of flexbond (possibly 2 coats if i have enough), then glossy spray paint. I'll flex and bend the scrap piece once the paint has dried to see how it holds up. i'm hoping i get a good strong bond.

I finished the legs this weekend, both thighs and both calves are done.

That leaves:
Hip pods
knee pods
shoes
gloves
shoulder bells (need to redo them b/c i changed the chest and their too small now).

So i'm closing in on the home stretch of my build portion. i'll post some leg pics tonight, now that my tights have come in.

Would you mind telling me where you ordered the flexbond from?

take care,
Tommy

OK Everyone, Small Crisis!

I ordered some Flexbond last week from the company i posted a few posts up. After not hearing anything from them for a few days, i called them up. They finally got back to me today and explained what's going on.

They don't actually keep Flexbond in stock, they just order it from Rosco and they drop ship it to customers like me. He informed me that ROSCO DOES NOT HAVE ANY FLEXBOND IN STOCK. Apparently there's some sort of problem with their importing of it(it's made out of the country), so Rosco has none to ship out.

So, it's likely that unless you know of a store that has Flexbond on their shelves, you're not going to get a gallon of it by ordering it online.

I have a place in Atlanta that i'm going to contact and see if they have it in stock, otherwise all us foam builders might have a serious problem.

Does anyone have any stage-craft stores local to them that could check and see if they have any flexbond in stock?

I called a couple places and all of there stuff ships the same. Glad you said something bc the store I called only had a business office here while I thought it was an actual store. every place i called gets their stuff from rosco itself. so most are just playing middle man> :-(

Iron Maniac. I am using Mod Podge and so far it works great to seal the foam and it flexes... I did this because it's nearly impossible to get that stuff in time for Halloween.

I have used Modge Podge on latex pieces in the past and it did not flex at all...it actually cracked after drying. Is there a different type of Modge Podge that I am missing?

take care,
Tommy

I am using spray-on Plasti-Dip. So far it works well to seal it and it flexes fine. It doesn't really fill in the surface though so the texture of the foam is still there. Might mess with it more after halloween.

The non-spray Plasti-dip might work for thicker coats.

I actually noticed that in the hardware store when i was looking at spray paints. I worried that it would cost too much for me to do the entire suit in that Plasti-Dip. I went online looking for bulk buys or larger containers of it, but they were all very expensive.

I'll be interested to see pics of how it comes out.

Meanwhile. I've got my legs done. Still need to do the shoes, but the thighs and calves are built and screwed together.

Hoping to get those boots done before the weekend, still need to put together the new shoulder bells and the spine up the back.

I have the best paint ever! I will post pics tonight of the sample I have shot already. It looks amazing!

I'm excited to see your paint Jordan! I'm curious as to how that particular foam you used accepts paint

I'll be sure to post or PM you pics when I get more coats of plastidip spray on.

My foam is sort of porous on the surface (I ordered polyethylene foam from foam factory). I feel like my foam choice was not the best since I got the lowest density foam they had and stuff that I feel was wayy too thin (1/4").

I ordered 4 spray cans of the plastidip stuff and I am hoping that's enough to cover everything. The cheapest I found was off Geroy's (through amazon) for about $6 a can. So far it's flexing well but the porosity of the foam surface hasn't improved at all. Maybe after halloween I will play with filling the surface and see how it works.

How thick are the camping mats?

Can't wait to see, aoifrost.

It's been a while since i put any pics up, so here's my entire suit so far.

I was working on the shoes tonight, i've got them about half way done. I'm building them at the same time, it makes sure all the pieces are the same so they turn out identical.

As you can see, arms, legs, chest, abs, waist, all done. A hip pod is in there too, i'll do the other one soon. I'm hoping i'll be able to finish the shoes tomorrow, then redo the shoulders by the weekend.

Red undersuit, gallon of flexbond, and a few other things are on there way to me right now. But it's all coming together!

this looks SO fantastic and is such an incredible alternative for those of us who can't vac form! i love checking in on your progress and it's definitely coming along GREAT! *o*
