Cable (Deadpool 2) Arm V2.0

I haven't built anything for a while now. I have had some time on my hands lately and wanted to re visit Cable's arm .
At the time I made my first version of this arm I had not worked with sintra.
I had the idea to make it in sintra after seeing Jackal 's posts and build with worbla in the cable thread. Also the foam didn’t hold the form the way I had hoped.
I decided to do a ground up re-build of the lower portion of the arm. I guess I am a little obsessed with robotic left arms.
Here are some of the originals and a link to the other thread.

First I ordered some 3mm sintra and some 3 mm foam. The original upper is fine as is, as well as the sleeve that connects top and bottom.

I had to re template everything as I lost the originals and they were off a bit. Once I had that paper templates where I wanted them, I transferred it all to the 3mm foam. Made sure it all fit over the connector sleeve with room for lights and “cables “ in the forearm. More progress to follow

Once I had the pieces in foam and everything pieced together and landing on the arm the way I wanted, I used those foam templates to trace them out on the sintra then cut them out.

I made some “bucks” out of 5 mm foam. These were smaller than the actual piece in an effort to give 2 of them that raised/shaped effect that the screen arm has. i heated the edges and the buck worked .

Heat forming the sintra is tricky. Too little and it can't be formed or bent. Too much and it gets too mushy and fingerprints. There was a fine line,
It took a little bit to get the sweet spot but I finally was able to. I found a lamp top "ball' that holds the shade on that was the perfect size to make the circular indentions on the top of the 2 armor pieces. heated them up and pressed the indention in. Since I plan to glue everything with contact cement i backed the parts with 2 mm foam.

Not looking like much at this point but its starting to come together a little .

For the forearm base that all the armor attaches too I heat formed the narrow part to the my wrist leaving a little room for the sleeve and cables. The upper part flares out wide enough for the sleeve and cables to fit under.

I cut the holes in the front and back and then formed it around my arm to where the two sides meet on the inside that would be covered by the inside piece of armor.
The attachment is magnets similar to a Mandalorian gauntlet allowing it to part enough to fit my arm and hand through.

On to prep and painting.
Wanted a difference in the more silver armor pieces and the base forearm piece underneath. Went with duplicolor hot rod grey primer and matte clear coat then buffed that down with some steel wool. Did a black-wash and added some bronze weathering .
IMG_4172.jpegIMG_4173.jpeg

I outlined where the armor would go and taped it off so there would be no glue issues.
Found some copper pieces and pipe clamps and glued them on front and back . And finally added silver metallic highlights to all edges.
IMG_4174.jpegIMG_4171.jpeg

For the armor pieces did a couple passes of: duplicolor primer and 400 wet sand. Didnt go crazy on the smoothing since this arm is weathered and battle worn. Next was duplicolor flat black primer and then gloss clear over that. I will use Alclad stainless steel and airfram aluminum when it’s time to paint them. Also hit the the inside of these with a heat gun and plasti dip over the foam so I can make that silver too.

The sintra paints well and was easy to prep and sand.

Had some time this afternoon and got the Alclad stainless steele laid down. I am loving it. If I had to do it again I would have used some filler primer and sanded a little higher. I do love it though and will clear it soon, then glue everything up

The seam on the inside of the arm that allows it to open is covered by one of the pieces of armor. It’s the largest piece so I can’t glue it.

I decided to use rare earth magnets. They are not quite as thick as the sintra which allows for a recess and the piece locks in. It works so well I might use magnets on most of the other pieces as well.

On another note I am thinking of stripping/sanding the armor back down and going through prime/sand / prep again. I know it’s not supposed to be chrome and shiney but I was hoping for a little more contrast between the armor and the base piece. We will see

Forgot the pic of the magnets on the inside of the armor….. still have the taped here but you can see them .

Wow, great job! I’d love to see the whole suit if you wouldn’t mind.

I’m wondering if Sintra is what I have now?! I found some scrap lying around work. I was told it was Kydex, but I never believed it lol. It got super soft, like you mentioned.

Thanks,
Here is the final battle kit, poncho kit, and jailbreak kit. Never really got a full suit up on the jailbreak. But that is a foam BFG that attaches to the plate carrier with magnets.

I am going to sand back the pieces and re paint. Will prep smooth then use hot rod black duplicolor and 2k clear, then duralumen chrome , then 2k clear. If it’s too shiney I can weather it down over the 2k clear.

Not a ton of progress but I got the 4 pieces strippped down, sanded and a couple layers of filler primer. I sanded to 600. I ordered some Duralumen chrome and am picking up some 2k clear go over the flat black. Then chrome, then 2k. If it’s too shiney ( not sure it can ever be too shiney) i will weather on top of the final 2k.

Again not much progress but the small next step.
Got 2 layers of filler primer on each piece . After the first layer they were wet sanded with 400. After the second layer wet sanded with 600. Then duplicolor hot rod black.

Next step 2k over the hot rod black.
It will be a couple weeks though

Been a minute but a little bit of an update. Was able to get 2k clear on 3 of the parts. Should be able to get the rest of the parts done and the chrome stage then final clear coat by the weekend if all goes well.

This “should” (fingers crossed) come out shiny metallic/chrome enough to weather down after final clear coat.

Holy COW ! Awesome so far
Thanks! I messed up one of the pieces and will have to sand some surface issues back and re-prime black and clear again. This is taking longer than I thought but I don’t have a timeline and i have invested in the 2k clear, amd the chrome so I want to get it right.( as right as my meager paint skills can).
Got some time over holidays so I might get lucky and get it knocked out in the next few days

Aannnndd -we are cleared.

Couple days wait then a couple more magnets to attach, some glue , then weathering.

Got some work done.
The right side Is glued on permanently.

The left side has the one panel that attaches with magnets and covers then seam line.
I added a couple small pieces of Velcro so it won’t fall off if it’s hit
I glued the upper left part from the front to the seam. The last half overlaps the seam and locks in with another magnet.
