Re: Question about which Doctor Who sonic screwdrivers to buy......

i thought about using pipe stands but have mine in a box crafted by my grandfather that i never met lined with suede its old and battered but looks great but the pipe stands would do a great job

The stands look good but the box sounds a lot better, just the sort of thing a timelord would keep his old sonics in :thumbsup

Re: Question about which Doctor Who sonic screwdrivers to buy......

My previous display was made from an old wooden box and some stuff from dossiers (I don't know what they are called, the metal parts, which hold the transparent bags in place):

I'm not a big craftsman but I think it looks nice enough. I only switched to the pen display because I couldn't modify the box to hold 4 sonics:

Nice displays! I can't wait to get to work on mine. Just need the sonics- I want to measure them so they each fit and I don't have to go back and re-cut.:lol

Re: Question about which Doctor Who sonic screwdrivers to buy......

A friend of mine just got his Tenth Doctor remote and he's not happy with it. He said they cut corners- it's very cheaply made, has loose parts, and feels flimsy. I'll have to see it myself, but I still want it. I'm a bit surprised he's considering returning it, honestly- he's a bit obsessed, and it WAS scanned from Tennant's personal sonic.

But with the electronics and motion control, I don't know how solid it could possibly feel......

Re: Question about which Doctor Who sonic screwdrivers to buy......

If you like it buy it from him for half price :D It's strange that he doesn't like it, I heard nothing but good things about the remote. Hopefuly soon I can buy it too.

Re: Question about which Doctor Who sonic screwdrivers to buy......

It's very light. The main body is plastic. The black end cap twists and the emitter head (on mine) is wobbly. All of these things kind of make it feel cheap.
The weight is unavoidable considering the parts. It starts to feel better in your hand after a while. I can't imagine it being any heavier now.
The plastic body is a little disappointing but it's very dense and strong.
They say the black cap is the same color and texture as the prop. It twists around to help with the turning motion of the remote. It was intentional and there's no way it will fall off.
The wobbly head is the main problem I have with it. Supposedly some glue will fix it. I haven't worked up the nerve to try it.

its £70 and that takes some beating, with a little black acrylic wash to bring out the crackle makes a great difference its also rechargeable whats not to like at the end of the day its a novelty tv remote and a blooming good one and for the price it cannot be beaten

Like a small jeweler's screwdriver butt end? That makes sense.

Re: Starting my Doctor Who sonic collection....

I just received my "Other Doctor" sonic, by CO. And I've got another tenth Doctor sonic coming, to have as a "9th Doctor", since the older Eccleston ones I've found seem to go for about $80.

I finished my display- for the most part. Prototype stages, if you can call it that.;) Sneaking big pieces in and out of work gets stressful, and I made a few stupid mistakes- as you can see. But with the sonics in place, you can't even tell.

The base is black Delrin, with a Lexan back, and top support. Not quite what I wanted to do, but I'm still in the tweaking stages. I had to move the bottom holes another 10mm forward- the Pertwee and Baker sonics wanted to fall over. So a 20mm lean turned out to be the charm.

I'm still waiting on them to release the 5th and 8th Doctor sonics, and I even left a space in my display for the Colin Baker "sonic lance", should they decide to do it.;) I also left room for the (presumably) Capaldi sonic. Though those are just smaller pilot holes, 'til I know the diameters to cut.

And yes, I know the Tennant sonic is extended- I like it that way.:) Makes sense to me. Better symmetry.

Re: Starting my Doctor Who sonic collection....

Nice display! Are you planning to fiddle with the 10th and 11th one's switches? (11th to work in extended mode and 10th to work while you use the slider).

I'm really curious whether they will release the 8th and 5th sonics or not. I'm really interested in the 8th one but only if it's not spring loaded. But it's likely that I will try to make one from wood and pvc pipes (my only problem is the painting and the glueing, I never did anything like this, so I don't know what to use, where to buy and how much will it cost).

Re: Starting my Doctor Who sonic collection....

Sorry to hijack this thread, but Rodann, on the Other Doctor's Sonic does the black section of the emitter have light bleeding through when the sonic is activated?

Thank you:)

No, I'll keep them the way they are, for now. If you extend the 11th Doctor's sonic, and hold it just right, you can activate it by using the black button between the silver ribs (the button that the main button actually pushes when closed). As for the Tenth's, I'm already not too keen on the buttons they put in the blue slot, so I don't see the point in modifying it.

Yeah, a tiny bit. It's just rubber after all, and paint doesn't coat it well. Another coat might help.

An ebayer that already sold an 8th sonic, told me February.

supervoc7? I wanted to write him but decided not to bother him with my fanboy bs :)

The whole point of modifying the 10th sonic, is that you don't have to use those 2 buttons, rather the slider. You can take out the button from the inside and insert it into the slider cap, or you can do it less elegantly, but way simpler, by moving the slider cap a bit.
There is a fairly easy way to modify the 11th sonic too, there are videos about both and descriptions here on the forum too.
Don't want to push the matter, just thought I would mention that there are fairly easy ways to make them a bit more accurate (especialy if you have experience with tools).

Re: Starting my Doctor Who sonic collection....

Yeah it was him.lol I apologized right off the bat, because I'm sure he gets a lot of those messages.

Re: Starting my Doctor Who sonic collection....

Thanks for the reply Rodann and Balakin. Mine has it too, but it took rain water in (a few drops) and i've removed more paint trying to clean away the water!! agghh! I don't understand why they didn't mould that part in black plastic?

That's a very nice display. They do look good altogether like that :) (Nice lightsaber too!)

There was a run in the junkyard for the sonic lance, but I don't think there was enough interest to get it started.

Re: Starting my Doctor Who sonic collection....

Thank you:)

Yeah, I'm sure the sonic lance isn't exactly a hot item. I'd be surprised if CO did it, but then I was surprised they announced the 5th and 8th sonics. I'm obsessed right now, so I'd buy anything.lol

Re: Starting my Doctor Who sonic collection....

Good question. My assumption........ is that since the whole Tom Baker/Jon Pertwee piece is already molded in red (for the sake of the outer ring), they just saved money by simply taking existing parts in production, and reworking ( cutting and drilling) them. Paint it black just as with the other ones.
