Nawya Replicas 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver

So, this just came out and while there are some inaccuracies, for the most part it’s a decent $200.00 metal replica. The copper screws are an obvious glaring inaccuracy. They went with an aged yellow handle and the green emitter is solid. It comes with an extra white, red and blue emitter, two of which are in rubber right now so that I can make a new one from resin. The tolerances are tight, and while not perfect, it’s good. Concessions were made to keep the price point down.

Thanks for the photos. Where are these reliably for sale? A lot of the sellers on Ebay have very little to no feedback.

I got mine from one of them. Be warned! My electronics stopped after 3 days. The claw section above the grip was loose and I turned it to tighten it and apparently clipped the wiring.

I’ll be performing an autopsy and seeing if I can resurrect it.

Did a few mods. The electronics stopped working three days into owning it. The connectors have very tight tolerance, and it doesn’t take much to throw them out of alignment.

I took it half apart and got it sorted back out.

I sanded down the sharp edges on the aluminum cage part. I painted the handle white. I cast a new emitter out of resin. I used a long set resin so the swirl effect faded into the color. Still loads better than the plastic one that it came with.

Wow this looks so much better. Did you also replace the white LED?
I also need to take care of those sharp edges on the aluminum section. (cut my thumb) Did you by any chance take pictures while you took it apart or could you roughly describe where to begin?

I didn’t replace the bulb. The white works fine, I think.

I started by unscrewing the copper slats off of the cage. I intended to replace them with brass studs but if I do, it’s a permanent solution. I’ll never be able to take it apart again.

Next I took out the grub screws at the top where the copper slats connect to. Here’s the kicker, I didn’t have to go any farther than that. Once I was able to rotate that section, the electronics made contact again, so I think it may be contact points and not wires. But I can’t be sure as it started working so I put it back together.

The old plumbers rule. Once the sink starts draining, quit plunging it.

I could not get the grub screw back in the handle. I had a torch shining down into the tube to see the hole lit up and nada.

Also, the tube section that the bottom copper part screws into is two pieces. They have the threaded section that the battery holds into, then the copper ring is placed against the black handle, and then a second tube is press fit over that locking the ring in place and the yellow handle slides over that.

This thing is heavily engineered, with the exception of the electronic connections.

I hope this helped.

No pictures, I’m a get it fixed kind of guy, sorry.

And it’s back to not working again. The electronics and the thing are so fiddly it doesn’t take much to knock them out. For 240 bucks, if all you want is to have it sitting in your display, this would be fine. But if you ever want to push the button and make it light up and make noise, you may want to think twice about buying one of these.

"Think twice..." Hoo boy, am I already doing that x_x I purchased this Sonic from an eBay seller because I couldn't find an affordable one anywhere else. Already I'm worried they may be a dodgy drop shipper, but I've also been seeing half the reviews for this thing mention the electronics or quietness of the sound effects. I'm fine with doing some tinkering and usually wind up doing so anyway, so I'm not 100% worried I'm wasting my money. Still, I'm wary from the jump...

Yep, so I put in a concern with the seller that the electronics were bad. Two days later, he asked me to upload a video which I did. Two days after that, he finally downloaded it. Two days after that, he told me he’s contacting the manufacturer to see what he can do.

I told him just give me a partial refund and we’ll call it cool.

I’m seeing a lot of people online complaining about the same issue.

Well, I'm a crazy person so I'm still gonna take the risk. All the risks. Besides, I have the CO toy so if I need to swap in electronics, that may be an option.

It is a beautiful sonic. I don’t think they were really prepared to engineer electronics with the extending and retracting motion.

At this point, I can’t return it. I sanded the aluminum sides smooth, I’ve cast a new emitter, and I’ve painted the handle white.

Pretty much voided any implied warranty!

Still a great replica physically. It will need a few mods though.

I'm down for a few mods. I was thinking of replacing the emitter lens and handle. For now I'm going to airbrush the handle, and I'm already talking with someone on IG about a new swirled lens.

If you find one for a good price, drop me a DM, swirl is very hard to do.

Here is another upgrade. Thanks to DexAntares for printing me a handle and providing the brass screws. I made the emitter with UV resin, pouring a little, adding alcohol ink, cure it, repeat. It has a nice swirl and a cracked ice effect.

IA bit more tweaking.

And DexAntares made me another handle.

The weirdest thing happened. The electronics completely quit after a few days.

I noticed that the copper cap that the claws were seated on was about 2 mm away from the rib assembly. So I twisted the sonic to butt up against it and the electronics began working again.

But that left about a 2 mm gap at the handle section. So he made a new one for me and it all fits together perfectly.
