It was just a love story:love...
With Rhinestone Cowboys.:lol
As a gay man myself, I think the film got more fluff for being a "gay cowboy movie" than for how it actually told the story. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad the culture is coming to a place where a film like that can get mainstream audience; and the narrative is a powerful narrative; but I feel there were missteps in telling that story.
i.e. how they magically end up having sex after knowing each other for like half a day.
And I thought Ledger was incredibly one dimensional...and I get that he is supposed to be the "strong, silent type" guy, but something about it just didn't click for me.
Then again, I saw the movie in my western films class, and my professor raved about it, so what the heck do I know? :lol
